By request from my livestreams, let's jump right back into the Discontinuity thing, but this time combined with a much older plugin: the original Distance!
This is a kind of plugin meant to darken the sound and make stuff sound really far away. Originally, I was thinking something that could take all the highs out and accentuate rumble, like turning a sound into the thunder version of itself. And so the first Distance worked basically as an EQ: three stacked stages of processing that combined to make stuff huge, kind of like my monitoring plugin SubsOnly.
Thing is, that doesn't have any nonlinearities to speak of in it, not the kind that happen in the real world over that much air. And at the time I was working on a Console version called Atmosphere, and thought I had a handle on bringing in that kind of nonlinearity. And so the next one was Distance2… but it lost some of the purity and depth of Distance, but didn't sound quite the way I wanted. It was the best I could do at the time, and is still there if you're interested in different sorts of darken/distort.
And then I brought in Discontinuity and was working on it in livestreams and someone mentioned, what if it was part of Distance? And the interesting thing is that Discontinuity also gets its sound from… three stages of processing, stacked. (as in, not side-by-side but in series, one after the other.)
Anytime you look at a situation like that, you can think to yourself: well, I could run these two plugins on after the other, but what if I interleaved the stages? One of Distance, one of Discontinuity, another Distance, another Discontinuity, and so on? Surely that would combine the effects in a more interesting way, merge them into a new distinct thing as they work on each other in turn?
And so here is Distance3. It goes right back to the tone quality of Distance, but it has all of the 'loud vibe' from Discontinuity, and outperforms either of them if you need the synthesis of both. There's probably lots of uses for this and my hope is that it'll be very easy to find those uses: if a thing has to be convincingly far away and you've already got reverb and ambience taken care of, Distance3 should immediately get you there in the best possible way.

That demo gave me similar feels to the first time I snuck into Glastobury festival, back in 97. Walking down miles of winding country lanes, and the sound shifting with distance and geography. Great work, Chris!!!

This sounds way better than when I lazily low-pass a "distant" sound. Cheers, Chris 🍻

That sounds pretty accurate. We have a metal festival in my town, and I can hear it from my house. Only missing the complex reflections from lots of buildings and alleys etc :p

Fantastic tool for cinematic sound editing, but also could be very interesting in transitions in hard rock or other relatively intense material. In ambient music, it could be very cool to apply this to multiple groups of tracks or sounds, and have their respective perceived distance modulate slowly against each other.

This would be cool for a dropout & return type of effect... right before a heavy part the guitar fades away into the mists, and then all of the sudden BAM right back in your face, and you showed that well.

Or anything else you'd usually use a regular low pass filter for, but with a different flavor
@TachyBunker

@@GizzyDillespee i find that to be similar to how i use the ZLowpass and YLowpass filters. Sometimes on the master (heresy!), i have it automated so it both goes dark, quieter, and distorted, and then it comes back to normal, OR unfiltered but with the distortions :) (See it in my songs Empty Throne and Necro Creed, if you want)

@@TachyBunkerYeah Necro Creed does the exact same thing I was thinking, but backwards! I was thinking slowly filter more and more, and then slam it back immediately. Same idea. The microtones are wild, I love those.

I'm so excited for this. I'm trying to balance distance and discontinuity to get this exact effect right now for a part of a song. I'll send you the example and a thanks when it's done. I'm one of those who can't afford patreon, but things are looking up!

I can honestly see this being very useful for film makers. Like, if you have a scene at a festival or something, and the characters are walking towards the stage, getting closer and closer. This would be great.

Thanks Chris! I'm already using Discontinuity. Makes sound more organic and natural, and also helps to make a contrast between the front and back elements. As for the Distance... I have a thought that the width parameter could also have a place in such tool, cause obviously sounds farther away can't be wide.

This is a great Plug-in. I've compared this to the sound of a distant festival I was getting further away from. The only thing different is with the sound of the festival the change in loudness over time ( going up and down at semi random intervals) obviously caused by the changing direction of airflow.

Awesome as usual. Can't help but wonder what it'd sound like interleaved with some sparse/long reverb to emulate a festival in a large outdoor space.
@airwindows
@airwindows 2 месяца назад
You only need to put the reverb on, the reverb doesn't have to be interleaved or run inside it. That said you know I'm going to be including Discontinuity inside reverbs from now on, starting with a revisit, kCathedral3 :)

Try Distance at 0, Top dB anywhere between 110-120 and Dry/Wet to taste (0.5 worked best for overdriven rhythm gtrs in my case) and it really brings virtual guitar amps alive ;)

Hi Chris is there any chance you could make your text fade to the right instead of left? I'm a bit slow at reading and that would give me the extra half second I need.
@airwindows
@airwindows 2 месяца назад
I don't know. It's a slightly modified effect for Final Cut and I'm not entirely up to speed on how to re-hack all the bits of it. But I daresay I can make it default stay on the screen a bit longer :)

Would any of the kplate reverbs get the right feel for distance or are you developing something special?
@airwindows
@airwindows 2 месяца назад
I will never NOT be developing something special :) that said, bear in mind plates aren't real spaces, they're metal slabs with vibe. I'm still trying to get kCathedral better, but kCathedral2 isn't bad and you could combine some of that with this to bring in a little non-plate ambience that has low-end. I've bugfixed both the original kCathedral and kCathedral2, so if either gave you troubles, the current version shouldn't, nor should future stuff along those lines :)

I'm not following you long enough now to have witnessed the introduction of the previous Distance iterations. What exactly is the process here? It sounds great but other than lowpass-filtering, i wouldn't know how this effect comes to be. Is there some reflection stuff also going on to simulate the distance? Or some smearing of frequencies?
@airwindows
@airwindows 2 месяца назад
Distance is already doing a tricky slew-squishing thing, and then it uses Discontinuity which was the previous plugin. Alternates them, back and forth three times to sort of blend them :) so it's not even exactly a lowpass filter, really. It's an Airwindows plugin, it's open source code so you can see exactly what the process is, I'm reading that from the code right now :)
@TollsterMensch

@@airwindows Sounds great. Thank you for always answering my stupid little questions, ha. What you do is really interesting. Unfortunately I'm not a programmer, so I don't really know how to interpret source code, but this seems to be yet another reason to start learning it i guess :D

So you are saying for best results we should use discontinuity, distance 3, and a reverb in conjunction?
@airwindows
@airwindows 2 месяца назад
Distance3 contains Discontinuity already :) but it depends on 'best results', the sounds you want will probably not be only one sound coming from only one place…
