JCal, I think you missed the lesson. Showing the old clip again, and standing by what you said, means you still don't understand why you were wrong back then. And then the incongruence of following that clip with an "I respect Palmer" was almost satirical. Clearly *all* the other besties get it, so I'd suggest you have a long private talk with them - or maybe just Friedberg - to figure it out. The lesson is to never take the low road and resort to personal attacks. It may get you cheap points with the mob of the day, but you never know when the person you're disrespecting may do something respectable...
Or worse the ppl that they're shitting on might never go on to provide us with their own unique value, imagine all the unicorns that never were cause of ppl like Jason
Agreed. This was a petty, low-class move. I actually like JCal, but this was just wrong. No additional “context” was necessary. It was a crappy, biased take and he should take the L.
He’s a “networker, everyone’s friend” archetype basically. Palmer was exactly right that these are the types who don’t have any actual values or opinions, they go with the flow in order to make as many friends as possible. But this is unsustainable in the long run, as this conflict perfectly illustrates
Friedberg’s response makes more sense if you watch yesterday’s all in podcast where he reveals they had a temporary falling out because Jcal tried to get rid of Friedberg and replace him. He’s probably loving this.
THIS is why Friedburg is the most popular bestie as demonstrated with the crowd Q&A. He's level-headed and is so evidently interested in seeking the truth of the matter in all discussions, it's rare and inspirational.
@@samlloyd672 I'll give JCal credit for calling out the other "besties" over how they benefit from accredited investor laws. And I appreciated his position on human rights in episode 63. Apart from that he is my least favorite, with Chamath not far above him.
I can feel Sacks smiling during Palmers speech on Jason. Some harsh truths.. Palmer is a legend! Thank you for saying what’s on everyone’s mind right now when it comes to our current political environment.
“David was SUPER correct” just because he made that obvious statement and this comment gets over 100 likes?? Lol I’m starting to think David pays people to support him because this is extreme lol.
@@brandonna606 if you want behavior to continue, you have to acknowledge and celebrate it. Those 100 likes means this guy prob did something alot of us would not have done given similar circumstances. Celebrate/acknowledge the things you want to see in the future.
@@asdf123411288 lol I get it, I’m just saying they could at least celebrate the great things he actually says, not the regular stuff. Otherwise it just feels like virtue signaling.
100% agree with Friedberg! Kudos to Palmer to be brave by calling JCal out and be honest on how the latter’s actions impacted him. Kudos to JCal to take this in his stride, reason with Palmer and being civil about it (not adding fuel to fire). This is what makes AIP unique, having honest and difficult conversations at the centre of the biggest and most influential echo-chamber in the world called Silicon Valley.
I disagree with a fair number of Jason’s positions. But the fact that he wanted this conversation to happen and his tolerance for criticism raised my opinion of him. Definitely worth emulating in those respects.
Love how excited Palmer gets when he gets to talk about VR, you can see his face light up and he starts talking even faster, you can really see how much it means to him. Coincidentally, as a big fan of VR myself, Palmer has been sort of a childhood hero to me ever since learning about Oculus back in high-school so this talk was definitely the highlight of the event for me
I though the same! Exactly what this world needs. People working towards a mission that they're passionate about. The sort of innovation that would be unleashed from that in so many different levels and fields, rather than being caught up in mob bull$#!& just as they called out! Great talk
This is why Friedberg is the favorite bestie, he really showed leadership here. Also Impressed with Jcal, most would not be able to take public embarrassment this well.
take it well? what was he supposed to do on the stage lol. he delayed WEEKS in getting this out and did a little monologue before and after, that isn't "taking it well"
@@ap23z i also find it incredibly funny that - as was discussed on this week's episode - he was demanding extra equity for "doing the work" ... LOL. He doesn't seem to realize that him running all of the production stuff is his contribution that got him the 25% to begin with. He isn't on the same level (i.e., have the same level of real experience or be in management at one of the top companies in the world, as the other 3 did) as the other 3
What I would have liked to have heard from JCal in addition to "I'll debate you anytime" is: "but I do want to apologize for the personal nature of my attacks. I attacked your character and that was wrong." That would have gone way further than the defence at the end (which served to reinforce Palmer's argument.)
The defense at the end was absolutely lousy. They ended the conversation with them both hugging! What else do they want for a solid ending? And if JCal wanted to add a statement, that would be fine also if it was something along the lines of - 'some introspection is required', but he lacks any maturity required to do some introspection in public. But let's also compliment him - frankly he ate shit and still participated in conversation, and like Friedberg said - Swisher would have probably kicked Palmer off stage.
I was fired in 2016 eventually for laughing when an executive arrogantly bursted out mid meeting with “its Hillary’s turn guys”. Thank you for speaking up Palmer. You’re the dude!
Broke my heart when Palmer said his dream was to spend his life on Oculus and VR, and now he can't -- he has every right to be upset about that to this day Palmer -- even though you never planned on creating Anduril, we will all learn in the not too distant future, why your life was guided to protect our freedoms
@@juggle people are imperfect. The usa is not perfect, but you’d prefer china leashing you cause they have no reservations from doing that if they could.
Man that context at the end did not do JCal any favors. Glad to see it though, it makes Palmer's anger even more justifiable. People comparing posting reddit memes with "violence" and "punching people in the face" was the absolute most disgraceful and terrifying part of that whole political saga, because once you have pretended that your opponent is violent it gives you the justification to be awful or violent towards them in return. So glad Palmer made it through and fired back, the harsh rebuke was more than deserved.
Also people grow over time. I know this show has made me a better person and a more rounded person. Im now interested in politics and want to make a larger impact in improving society.
I thought the follow up context clip undercut Plamer's insinuation that all of those quotes were spread over a long time. Not so, it was in one podcast. Also supported the notion that Palmer did act like an idiot by jeopardizing those who depend on him (investors and "family"). Wonder if Palmer would agree that his weren't the most responisble actions back then. Sometimes we all make idiotic mistakes - it's good to own them.
Friedberg did a masterful job of mediating. Comic relief, complimenting Palmer on his bravery, and complimenting Jason on his willingness to talk things out. Also, pointing out the nature of mob behaviour was useful in making it not personal.
Out of all the speeches presented in your recent event Palmer Lucky's was one of the more insightful (and hopeful!) ones, really looking forward to this one.
this guy is next level genius; and the plot twist of him talking about Jason makes it epic; Jason should apologize in straight way and not giving this fake conditional apology that he did
@@JRP3 I respectfully disagree with your analysis. I believe people should be free to express their opinion, Elon wouldn't be considered divisive if he criticized the right, but he sided against the vocal majority like Palmer. And the hypocrisy is that JCal can never insult Elon because he is not the underdog like Palmer was.
@@FreddyHuman I agree it's hypocritical, that was my point, and I agree that people should be free to express their opinion, including JCal. It's equally hypocritical for Elon to complain about divisiveness while taking sides in contrast to his more neutral past positions.
@@yoeyyoey8937 Yes he is, said he'll only vote Republican now, even though he said they are the party of "corporate evil and religious zealotry", his words.
Maybe the best All-In episode. Palmer Luckey is not only a genius but he communicates at a very high level for a non-degreed technology leader. Amazing! Several thoughts: 1. The quote that "it feels safer to be in the mob" and "you can only attack if you are in the mob." Is so true. 2. The power that the corporate world, media and Hollywood has to cancel you out if you supported Trump is terrifying. 3. Very funny that Jason Calacanis, the huge Trump hater is now a Trump supporter. 4. The comments made by Calacanis about Luckey were motivated by his support for Trump. If Luckey supported Biden, he then would have been a good guy. 5. The major defense companies do also have drone and autonomous divisions. So to say only Anduril is the only defense company working on autonomous defense and drones is not correct.
I appreciate how David Freidberg backed JCal at the end of the pod but also jokingly sided with the guest at the beginning so it doesn’t become awkward talk that was smart.
Jason was rude not to give Palmer the respect of listening to him throughout his presentation (pretending his phone was more important). Chamath saw it .. and noticed Jason's retreat was disrespectful. Even if you disagree with someone, listen.
Unfortunate to see someone like Palmer not work in the commercial VR industry, you can tell just how much he loves VR, he practically changed personalities when the topic was brought up.
Tragic how he was willing to spend the rest of his life bringing VR into it's full glory. Just imagine how bad the field is gonna look in 10 years without him vs with him.
Great presentation from Palmer, major respect for calling out JCal for personally attacking him on the other podcast. I'm glad Friedberg was able to step in an breakdown the tension between the two. His comments throughout the discussion show why he's the overwhelming AIS guest favorite bestie. I have to give JCal some credit for continuing on despite being called out, that took a high level of restraint. I just wish he would've immediately apologized for personalizing the criticism.
didn't know who Palmer was before AIP but found his articulation of the issue to be on point. also inspired by how much courage it takes to not tow the popular line when loud, influential voices are attacking you personally. it would be one thing if Jcal said "I think this was a really dumb move and here's why" but to go on the personal attack made Jcal look small. I can see why it took 3 weeks to edit this episode.
This is the one I have been waiting for. Thanks for getting it posted. After watching it, I can see hy it took so long to get posted. Brave of you Jason for facing it, and also brave of Palmer allowing it to be posted for us all to see.
You did the right thing to invite him, it was brave of you. Palmer's bravery in both confronting you and building a Defence company is undeniable. Your comments of 2017 were unnecessary, once you "leave the left" you will get the point.
Super brave of Palmer to go into the Lion's Den of JCal fans & also sit with his Besties & engage. Kudos to JCal for reacting like Chris Rock at the Oscars!
palmer - “jason never takes back what he said even when proven wrong, proceeds to prove jason wrong” jason - at end of the episode, “here’s A clip and yeah i stand by everything and it was justified” 😩
This has to be the best pod ever. Palmer is inspirational. Glad he stood up for himself and called Jason out. Family should be off limits but looks like they hashed it out.
He never attacked Palmer's family. He said one quote (that is shown at the end of this video if you watched it) that referred to Palmer not caring about his employees family members and team members. Which Palmer misconstrued as being an attack on his own personal family.
@@Ty-gt6qz he repeatedly called Palmer and idiot and moron and said “Palmer Lucky is a complete moron who doesn’t appreciate success or care about any of his employees, family members, or team members”. Why mention family members? What basis does Jcal have to mention someone else’s family in a situation like this
@@Ty-gt6qz I love your gaslighting When you call someone these names and say he doesn't care about his family members, that is absolutely attacking his family But hey, nice try with your gaslighting and word twist
@@Geor9e Do you have any actual examples of Jason attacking Palmer's family? The only quote I've seen of that is the mis-quoted one from the video at the end, so I will fully take back what I said if you have evidence of some other instance where he actually attacked Palmer's family. I'm not even defending Jason's actions, he was an ass and was rude in those clips and went way overboard, but my point is that villifying him and saying that he attacked Palmer's family is mob behavior based on incorrect facts. Even above this comment, someone wrote that Jason said "Palmer doesn't care about his employees, family members, ..." however that is a mis-quote but he said "employees family members" which was one phrase referring to the family members of his employees. Let's be honest in our critique of Jason, rather than hopping on the mob bandwagon of villifying him and mis-attributing that he attacked Palmers family somehow.
Never shy away from talking politics at the dinner table and especially with friends……if you want to learn and grow then you also listen to people you may not like and people you disagree with. Keep listening and learning and be willing to change your mind when someone changes it. Great to see Jason and Palmer engage, kind of gives me hope…. Please don’t hold grudges, remember we are stover together❤️
Palmer is an extremely intelligent and insightful person. Hope he gets a chance to work on whatever tech passion projects he has going forward without ridicule for his religious and political viewpoints (I am not a fan of religion personally).
great insights from friedberg and for being supposedly the unempathic" one, he was able to diffuse the tension early in the discussion. Show great deal of empathy and reading-the-room skills IMO.
Wow. That got a lot of his chest. Just remember this kid is 29, and he was a lot younger when all this was being said about him. Respect for saying what needed to be said. My secret bully…
Honesty and integrity. This is why the pod is successful. Kudos to Palmer Lucky for his courage. And to Jason for being open, honest and self aware to handle the blind side. Impressive display of restraint and professionalism.
Amazing video. A classic that will be remembered for years to come. That was a serious display of bravery from Palmer and I felt that authentic emotion from him. Jcal went down a few notches after seeing that but respect for putting the episode up
Your failures and mistakes are what helps you to evolve. Palmer and JCal are each other’s ladders. I see each of their actions towards each other as unintentional opportunities for learning and growth. Beautiful!
I love that you guys aren’t afraid to have the uncomfortable controversial conversations. Have a hell of a lot of admiration for all of you. JCal first came on my radar on Lex Fridman’s podcast - mad respect. I hope you guys continue with these conferences and that I can make it out to the next one. 🤞🏻
And again I am extremely grateful to all of you for doing this pod cast, Jason I appreciate your feeling back when the hammer of Palmer happened but I think we can be kinder to all parties involved in controversy. Extreme aggressive personal statements probably could be left aside when giving constructive criticism. I always respected my coaches in the past even when they were hard on me but when they called me names it was really hard to find the constructive part of the coaching. Really I love you guys and the work the pod is doing for our need for better enlightenment and education. Really Really you make my daily grind better to know their are smart men and women out there that I can aspire to be like
Huge episode, you can see palmer felt vindicated at the end. It's a stark reminder of the power words have on us, palmer must have been gutted during that time.
Hopefully the "All In" gang will be back together at some point, despite whatever recent friction there's been between them. This show is such a tremendous benefit to the viewers.
There was a cryptic tweet that made it seem that the All In pod might not be continuing. It's possible that Jason will continue it on his own. Guess we'll find out in the weeks to come.
@@BennyOcean can you share what the tweet was and who posted it? Very strange with such a huge downturn in markets when we would benefit the most from their commentary they don't do a pod for weeks! Understanding to take a break after the conference, but we NEED their opinions now more then ever.
No joke, after watching this I got a hunch that i will never see a hawaain shirt the same and be forever intimidated by men wearing hawaiin shirts, shorts, and sandals. The big balls energy is unreal 😅#godblessamerica
Jason’s one weakness is his higher morality and attacks people when he is in the side of the mob. Hopefully he learns from this and is more careful just attacking people. Great episode though, Jay Cal learn from this. Your higher morality comes off a little cringe
Great episode for so many reasons! Kudos to Friedberg for taking control and truly leading (what could have been a very uncomfortable second half) the discussion! 👏🏼 👏🏼 to all the other besties too.
I’m defo no Trump supporter but we can all agree that Palmer is a legend. Respect for having the balls to do what he did and confront Jason and the crowd heads on and respectfully. Although I kind of get why.. but I can’t help to find these last minutes from Jason a bit pity. You should have left it there man, the hug was a good and positive ending. Things were said, mistakes (or not?) were made.. but you both had a good dialogue about it. Love 4 all ❤️
I respect Jason’s composure throughout all of that and admire Palmer’s honesty. Now the air is cleared I’m sure they can both move forward respectfully
This video is an educational level quality production that could clearly demonstrate so many normal human inclinations that are part of the modern societal experience that human beings contend with being outside of the garden of Eden ( ancient prehistory ) It is a demonstration of us and them. War and peace and human nature collaborating , disagreement and how we manage it for good bad and lucky
This podcast encapsulates in my opinion what normal Americans are like. Most of us disagree on some things and agree on others, but most of us can still have healthy dialog and be friends. If only mainstream media took this to heart and attempted to create non-divisive shows, we'd have a more unified country.
Absolutely! It's easy to talk shit in an echo chamber, but when you're face to face with "the other side" it's easier to find some common ground and some civility.
The fact that JCal had to add a post comment is weak. He should have just apologized and moved on. Making a post comment is petty and sad. Can we do a Bestie trade JCal for Palmer?
Disappointed to see that, even if the face of Palmer's brave stand against his own cancellation, Jason cannot accept any culpability for his part in nearly ending his career ( at 54:00 ). It is made even worse by the fact the podcast complains about the same cancel culture stuff all the time. Heaven forbid Jason ever have to taste his own medicine.
Lambasting someone is not 'cancel culture'. Jason never called for him to be fired or barred from working again or anything like that, he just called him an idiot for doing something stupid. To say Jason is responsible for the end of his career is ridiculous after watching the clip that Palmer referenced. I completely understand why Palmer would be upset from that clip, but Jason didn't really do anything that wrong other than lambast him... that's not the same as ending someone's career
@@Ty-gt6qz we understand this very differently. Palmer was not referring to one show or one clip. He did give examples from the one. He clearly mentioned many months of unrelenting aggression
@@richbirecki If calling someone an idiot is cancel culture, then why do you even watch podcasts at all? Go watch the All In Podcast original episode where Chamath tore into the founder of Robin hood, or any other number of episodes where the hosts insulted and ridiculed a number of different people. According to you, that's cancel culture and they would be responsible for anyone that gets fired? The funniest part about this is that everyone is jumping on the bandwagon to hate Jason and love Palmer because it's now the current popular thing to do so everyone is throwing logic out the window and piling on top of Jason because it's easy. The reality is that Jason was an ass and went way too hard on Palmer and was biased and should apologize for all the things he said, but he's not responsible for ending Palmers career.
