On the kid volunteering and not getting allowance... Lots of people are saying grow up and get a valuable job. Y'all missing an important bit: volunteering at a historical society is more valuable on college applications than flipping burgers at a McD. In college he can start learning job skills.

Not gonna lie, volunteer kid story got me worked up. The parents charge their non adult children to use household items??? That's a kinds of messed up. Giving your kid that works less hours an allowance while not giving the kid with more hours an allowance? Messed up. Those parents don't even really care about the kids future properly. Volunteering looks amazing on college applications while work doesn't, it looks just about as good for job applications, and considering the kid is interested in the field it's a great career choice as well. Him leaving the volunteer position is far more likely to hurt his future than to help it, but they're too concerned about making him pay for the god damned TV to realize it. I think that the request came from the child from a place of admiration where they request the cake from this person because that’s the only source they know of, which I think is reasonable and kind of OP to accept. However, as soon as the mother requests a different cake free of charge, OP has the right to decline because anyone can make a chocolate cake and there is no reason for OP to make it.

Small correction on the wastewater thing, the majority of the world doesn't have proper wastewater treatment. Victoria BC was dumping raw sewage into the ocean until last year. The number of places with tertiary wastewater treatment systems that can actually bring the water back to a potable level even within developed nations is extremely low. TLDR: Saving water is quite important.

Regarding the cake baking post, I think an important detail here is the OP wanted to make a cake the kid asked for. I'm pretty sure had the kid said "no nuts is fine, but I still want the cake" the OP would've happily baked it. The main issue seemed to be the parent altering the request the kid made. Think letters to Santa, if you know your parent went in and changed what was written, that'd be really crummy and I feel like saying "I can do what the kid asked, otherwise I'm not interested" is totally okay. Admittedly I think it may have been a safe assumption the kid would've been fine not literally causing an allergy attack in their friends at the party, but it's still crummy and reasonable to not want the parent to change what was asked

If you care that much about not flusing that you're willing to let a relationship end because of it that's a huge red flag, but by the same token it's also a red flag if you so that much about whether someone flushes when they pee.

the How to Win Friends and Influence People joke got me good but i unironically think tons of people on AITA would benefit from it. it's heavy handed and kinda silly at times but it's as close as you can get to a written guide on how to be nice to people, which seems like one of the most common problems on AITA.

Living in a water scarce area, even public malls nowadays have potable water for the bathroom sinks and non-potable water barely filtered and recycled in-sito to flush toilets. And every few years, depending on the rainfall, the city will strongly advise domestic use of water be limited to 15 litres per person per day, ban bathing instead of showering except for medical need, etc. at least on paper. The rates are progressive, so the more expensive neighborhoods pay more for water, and the more water you use in a month, the more expensive every extra bit becomes. People definitely don't flush for every pee, as it would be expensive. Well water is even worse, because you need a licence, and if you share a well, the price fluctuates, going up not just with the progressive amount used, but also with the rate of use - every extra liter can be slightly more expensive than the last, and the more frequently you reach each increment, the more expensive it also gets. My company has even gone as far as installing water tanks in every branch and having signed a contract with a trucking company to have preferential access to tanker trucks available if water ever runs out, so that they can have water delivered daily in order to not disrupt trade the same way diesel can be delivered for the generator if the grid goes down. Saving water is a serious business, the type of thing put on business scorecards with equal weight to things like profit and shrinkage.
