This is an emotional movie by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Gauri, the daughter of Pandit Dinanath becomes an orphan. Madhusudan stays in Ambala and comes to adopt her. He tries to give her all comforts. Gauri gets to know Prakash, who likes to play tabla and he is Hanumanji's devotee. Their relation becomes like that of brother and sister. Madhusudhan also has a daughter named Maya who studies in a hostel. She has an affair with Ramesh. Madhusudhan does not know about their affair and he fixes Maya's marriage with Dr.Shankar in Mumbai. Madhusudhan's daughter Maya who was to be married to Dr.Shankar runs away from the house. The wheel of fortune turns. Pressing circumstances make Gauri step in as Madhusudhan's daughter Maya and she has to go to Dr.Shankar's home as his bride. Gauri feels bad that they are not telling Dr.Shankar the truth. After some days Gauri and Dr.Shankar get married in the temple of Benaras. Their life appears to be all pleasant. Gauri becomes pregnant and they are happy. On the other side Prakash meets Radha in a tabla shop. Even their life appears to be the pleasant. But the wheel of fortune turns again. Madhusudhan's daughter Maya who had disaapeared from the wedding, met with an accident. Ramesh, her boyfriend, had cheated her . Maya was admitted in the hospital where Dr. Shankar works and Gauri sees Maya in hospital . Gauri has a miscarriage and everyone's lives are taken by storm. Love changes Dr.shankar completely . After days he comes to know the truth and he regrets about what he had done. This emotional movie shows how sorrows and joy are interlinked.

In this galaxy of stars, all were shining brightly, Hasrat, Rafi, Shankar Jaikishan (no idea who was playing tabla, sarangi, but they were also the stars of that beautiful night), Rafi, Suman Kalyanpur, Mehmood, and Shobha Khote. I can imagine, at the root is masterpiece is Hasrat, only he with awadhi lyrics, can bring out the classical juices out of Shankar Jaikishan, i dont' beleive this composition took time to make. Waah! Words cannot match the feeling!

Note the murki in the word BAALAMAA which transcends over at least 5 notes and the effortless ease with which both Suman and Rafi croon it. But such a gem of a song has been parodied by the director trivially . This is a semi classical composition in raag Sindhu Bhairavi and should have been picturised with little more respect.

It is law of nature that Muhammad Rafi Sahib was not given Bharat Ratna, it was a good decision as he was much superior than these useless awards or rewards. Would these useless awards have given him more respect, love, fame, caliber or talent he had. I am now 71 and found of old songs, I honestly believe that all male or female singers in the subcontinent are thousand Kilometers away from his caliber. Allah gave him such a voice, dignity, respect, talent, love and character even living in such a dirty environment of film industry. No smoking no drinking & no scandal which are the basic parameters of a very different & great person. When there was a conflict with Lata Ji, he said NO NEED OF LIFETIME AWARD from my songs, such a great thought no greed. Now only what can I give him which can be useful for him at the heavens is DUA, My dear Rafi Sahib, May Allah bless you, Aameen, Aameen. I cannot measure the extent of respect & love I have for you as whenever I listen his classic songs I enjoy a lot & not able to understand how you developed such a FUN because as far as voice is concerned it is only Allah who can gift to any one he wants. He probably did not get education but how he came to this level where no one can or will reach. You were really the greatest greatest singer in the history of subcontinent who started with zero & no family background of music. O, Allah, you can bestow anything to any one as you have all the powers to do it. There is one example of Rafi sahib, who was blessed by Allah Almighty. Rafi Sahib you were really great .
