Ajmer Government Museum also known as ‘Magazine’ is situated inside the historical 16th century Akbar’s fort in Ajmer. In October 1908, under the initiative of Lord Curzon and Sir John Marshall, it was established by the Central British Administration as a provincial museum of Rajputana. Pandit Gauri Shankar Hirachand Ojha was the first Superintendent of the museum. It's established with the purpose of to focus on the cultural heritage of the region and exhibits it. Ajmer Government Museum has precious Sculptures, inscriptions, pre-historic sections, miniature paintings, arms and armor and objects of art and crafts. Out of all the sections of the museum, Sculptures section is very much alluring.
Many ancient, rare and unique pieces are there which have been acquired from famous locations like Pushkar, Adhai-din-ka-jhonpra, Baghera, Pisangan, Harsnath (Sikar) Bharatpur, Sirohi, Arthuna and Osian.Museum epigraphs attracts scholar’s from all over the world as they were collected from different parts of Rajasthan.
Despite preservation of artistic, cultural, historical artifacts, Now days it’s become an institution for promoting traditionalism by organizing many art, cultural and literary activities.
