excellent video , just the kind of plants and advice I was after , more of these propagation and splitting videos would be so welcome , well done Ian 👍👍
This was incredibly helpful, thank you. I picked one up at the garden center yesterday not knowing what it was but only that the dark glossy leaves and purple flowers were quite lovely. I had no clue it was a ground cover or where to put it. Anyway, thanks-subscribed 👍
Hi! I'm planning to cover the entire 2 acres of lawn with this plant so no grass will grow anymore. Since it's May and grass is growing, should I wait until winter when grass dies and then throw the seeds in spring? Or can I just throw this invasive species onto the grass and hopefully Ajuga will grow on top of the grass?
Which Ajuga do you plan to use. Seed is a great way to establish a large area, I would sow a trial area; one with grass cut short and the clippings left as mulch and one with a herbicide used to kill the grass. Once the seeds germinate and must not dry out. Alternatively you could apply multiple seed applications to the entire area, one application now, one in July, another in September. This would allow you to adjust for patchy growth. It’s a bold plan
so i had the purple ajuga for about 3 seasons in MI and this spring it looks like nothing was in that 2 foot by 2 foot area at all just flat dirt and no dead ajuga or nothing, i didn't clean up that area either, its gone
Beware ajuga will grow into your lawn and take over. I am regretting not being more careful when weeding over the years. I have a large rural yard and ajuga is taking over the grass in all areas. I am trying to hand pull it in areas that are small but I will never get rid of it all!. It is beautiful but keep it out of your grass.
