This week's video is looking at a pack of three products from AK Interactive. Are they worth it and how would you use them to weather?
If you are looking to get into weathering using military modelling techniques then this is a good starter pack. It has three great products and can be used with little else to get an impressive result.
Washes are a great product for picking out moulded on details and adding a layer of grime, built up around those details. I also use them to pick out panel lines etc.
Streaking grimes are thicker and will give great dirt effects on vertical sides.
Both types of products are enamels and easily manipulated once dry with white spirit.
Materials
AK Interactive Weathering Set - Trains - Locomotive & Wagon - AK7000
◾AK7001 - Streaking Grime
◾AK7002 - Rust Streaks
◾AK7003 - Neutral Grey Wash
White Spirit
Index
◾00:14 Real World
◾00:51 Method
◾15:42 Final Result
◾16:24 Mini Kathys

Great weathering job Kathy! I saw those paints sets when ordering another AK product, now whit your demo I feel as if I can get some of the same results. The book would be a good idea, but watching you use AK to weather I would be more prone to watch a video than go through the book. As always, thank you so much for sharing. Cheers, D. Muse

+David Muse Thanks! I like videos best but you can read a book whilst watching normal TV so I succumb to those too. With weathering, just jump in and have a go!

+Tase Enjoy the book. My hair wipes a lot out when it's down which is something I bet most of you don't have problems with!

Some more paint products to add to my collection I think. Great tutorial and finished result. I can see why you usually tie your hair back/up for these videos! ;-) I have no such problem!!!

I have caused more chaos with my hair than I care to mention but you can never have too much paint!

very impressive job indeed especially the rust streaks they look really good , i shall try a similar method with some acrylics that i have
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 7 лет назад
I find acrylics harder as once they have dried, that's it, they're solid. Enamels you can streak as many times as you like. Let me know how the acrylics work out for you.
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 7 лет назад
Does that ever start lifting off the underlying paint on the box car? I know IPA can so I'm always a bit wary of using that in vast quantities when weathering.
@DiggerEvans
@DiggerEvans 7 лет назад
Kathy Millatt yes you are right it can do that so it's okay if you use a non acrylic as a Base coat and use acrylics for the detailing etc... I am sure you are much more knowledgeable than I am as I've only just been modelling for a couple of years
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 7 лет назад
Gosh, I'm certainly not more knowledgable. I have certain ways of doing things but they are definitely not the only ways! I can always learn new things which is why I ask.

Kathy, great video! I have actually purchased those items individually, nice to know they come as a set too. Where did you get that spill caddy? That's brilliant! I made mine out of a scrap piece of scenery foam, but with all the different size paint jars those AK ones are too big for it. Cheers, Todd
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 7 лет назад
I bought the foam thing at Warley - a railway show in the UK. There's posh metal ones which I have my plastic cement in after knocking that over more than once too. You could almost make your own. AK is a popular size now so I bet there's some laser cut ones too.

Hey Kathy, how would the mini-Kathys react to four paint pots overturning and spilling all at the same time in those foam holders? Lol! Jesting aside, this is a very good instructional video on how to weather model trains with this new product. Thanks for sharing it.

+ATSF Venta Spur Nscaler Thanks a lot! That much spilt paint could be the end of the Mini Kathys; I'm not sure I'd find N again!

+sparky107107 Just have a go! Get a cheap model that you aren't worried about and if it goes wrong, wipe it off with white spirit and try again.

@alrozanski8352
@alrozanski8352 7 лет назад
Kathy did you prep the car in anyway with a dull coat?
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 7 лет назад
+Al Rozanski No, it uses the same solvent so the enamels and white spirit lift it off leaving a huge mess. Don't ask me how I know 😬 With washes, the matt finish of dulcote also stops them flowing properly and you get an odd effect. I use dulcote a lot but rarely when weathering now.
@alrozanski8352
@alrozanski8352 7 лет назад
Kathy Ok i may been thinking of weathering powders which I find a dull coat at times is necessary. I model O scale. Very nice work on your videos.
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 7 лет назад
+Al Rozanski Thanks, yes powders need the extra tooth if you are putting them onto a bare car. Otherwise they just fall off.

you cant say if you dont want to spend a lot of money buy a set then buy the book, which is 42€ a cheaper option is to watch Mig Jimmenez all over youtube thats Free and anything he demon straights can be applied to any model
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 7 лет назад
+PedroChapps Good point, Mig does some great free videos as you say but some people prefer books and this book is a different author so slightly different techniques. I bought my book in a sale so it was much cheaper.

No need to talk to N-scale like that; she's only little, and might have her feeling hurt! And anyway, that isn't what MPD stands for...
