I used aquasoil in my first walstad bowl that I just made. Was having difficulty keeping dirt from breaching the cap so I just decided to go with fluval stratum. It’s been going a week and no algae blooms so far and everything is growing well.
_Akadama holds more water, and promotes fine roots because small roots are able to penetrate the akadama particles. The downside of akadama is that it breaks down and becomes soggy over a period of 2-4 years. Pumice on the other hand is not degradeable and therefore provides structure and water retention._
@@yenriver5255I'm not able to verify this as I've preloaded my akadama with calcium and magnesium. In theory, the clay will lower pH due to the cation exchange.
