Late 80s - early 90s was the golden age of Hi-fi. Japanese brands like Akai, Denon, Marantz, Rotel, Sansui, Teac and of course Nakamichi were at the top of their game, others like Sony, Yamaha,Technics, Pioneer, JVC weren't far behind but the hi-fi magazine media were always slagging off Japanese gear and flattering British gear which to some small extent was justified because British Speakers were better in every way. The Japanese speakers were compromised at best, but there was never a serious British tape deck or CD manufacturer and when CD came out it destroyed the British turntable industry - it's only in last few years that viny has made a come-back but CD will always have a wider dynamic range and won't deteriorate every time you play it like vinyl which has a diamond stylus 'scratching' it's way through every groove to produce an audio signal. Now you know why people transferred all their albums on to tape. Again, all the best tapes were Japanese like TDK, Maxell, Fuji, Sony and That's. Most of those brands have either diversified into DJ gear, been taken over or just vanished, but that legacy still lives on thanks to the quality and reliability if those Japanese brands.
"Best tapes" for use with japanese tape decks you should've said, which were shit at actually handling real chrome tapes (and wouldn't license the technology hence the kobalt doped ferric tapes).
Linn brought out some cracking CD players, and Roksan. Also NAD, and Mission, with their Cyrus range. They were all prized by many a serious audiophile.
What a Beautiful setup, the most underrated HiFi brand ever, at least here in North America. Just picked a AM-52 amp and it smokes every piece of vintage gear I've listened to, and that's a lot! Should have played - "Never Let Her Go" Congrats on a great system and keeping it so well
Akai always made top notch stuff I thought ..had a vcr by them a week after they came out and was 500 bucks if my memory serves me correct. .. they make terrific reel to reels
AKAI is quality i still use my GXC-46 Stereo Cassette Recorder from the seventies, my AJ-520 FL Stereo Portable Radio GXC Cassette player from the eighties. And the Double Stereo Automatic Reverse GX-W45 cassettedeck from the nineties. They are all excellent & indestructible so i know what kind of quality your AKAI construction is !!!
Akai are great. I’ve got an old ac-710 still working perfectly from 1996. There only issue (if you can call it an issue) is their spectrum analyser is slow to reset .. keeps the bars high and and full volume, they barely return to base level. A pioneer of the same era, for example, is much more snappy
Fantastic Akai system! The systems today do not have the same sound quality as the old ones. Just labels liars values but lacks the sound quality of these old systems.
u know all of u who gave good or bad comments about eightees stereo systems either they were full range rack system or midsize system or even portable ..They were all fantastic ..if u grew up in eightees u guys know stereos then ..I don't even want to touch all this blue tooth speakers built in made amplifier on them ..This generation will never knew the same taste or feeling of the eightees ..sansui was my favorite of all time I still have the component rack system from 1984 beautiful sound beautiful look ..I hope they make those systems again ..I just wish .
, holy shit, I'm so jealous, DO NOT EVER sell or get rid of that audio rack Akai system, EVER!!!!!!! That's totally fucking awesome bro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing hi-fi products was built in past in special 80's and 90's. I was audiophile from childhood and my Panasonic Technics hi-fi audio line from home is used and I want to change with another one. I prefer vintage audio systems, sound much better than nowadays hi-fi systems. In my country I found only very used and in bad condition hi-fi lines. From where can I buy a hi-fi audio system like this in good condition and untouched in service? Thank you.
why the world can't come back to big hi-fi systems they are awesome just add bluetooth and mp3 playback and its a masterpiece ! i want a system like this
Because most people who are not into serious hifi, just listen to their music through ear buds, or Bluetooth speakers from their phones or ipods. You can still buy hifi components, but they are high end, and quite expensive actually. So you will rarely see such items in budget stores.
Bare in mind that DSP & EQ's Strangle the sound of proper HiFi, hence a true proper HiFi enthusiast won't touch these things. Great looking systems never the less
