Zoom H2n works pretty well as a combined mic with preamp. For a mono cardioid use Mid-Side mode with the ratio set to 100% mid or RAW mode. Line out to the MPC. Not a U87 but very usable. The H2n accessory kit includes a "handle" which will fit a stick-mic suspension mount.

You have a good channel. And you are totally right on the pre amp for connecting a mic. I use the X, but that is not a mobile device. A work around is a usb mic or a little interface that is class compliant. At home I use a Neumann TLM103. But for on the move projects a use a cheap Samson Meteor USB 🎙 . And the results are surprisingly good. Keep on the good work. 💪🏼

Ive had the Live 2 for about a month now and absolutely love it. The one thing I hear in every video is about tis weight and chunkiness. I personally think for what it is (an absolute workhorse) that it isn't too heavy really. I quite enjoy walking around the house holding it as im finger drumming , going to the couch going to the back yard. I was kind of anticipating it to be alot heavier by everyones explanation , I haven't tried to actually take it anywhere yet. But as far as around the house thumbs up from me.
@hdslave
@hdslave 2 года назад
I had the same feeling. Everyone said 7-8 pounds and heavy. Seems pretty reasonable and portable in real life with it
@apislapis
@apislapis 2 года назад
I think you're spot on. If you added the extra bits of kit that would be needed for the MPC One to offer the same facilities as the Live 2 it may end up heavier, plus it would be rather cumbersome to carry and defeat being mobile. Every piece of kit is a compromise and if you made it lighter would that not impact on it's quality, durability and use for gigging? 8lbs doesn't seem too heavy to me and clearly it ain't a problem for you taking it with you round your house. May you continue to enjoy your Live 2.

Literally just pressed the "confirm payment" button on a Live 2 Retro after having watched this video (and like 20 others) about 10 times. It was a VERY challenging decision but I just wanted that fucking built in battery for beats in bed. Quite a price jump for a battery but it's the difference of feeling fresh air and inspired while sitting in a sun patch somewhere or being in the synth cave at a desk. To be fair, it's a lovely room, but the desk is too close to making it feel like work sometimes. I imagine that black rubberized coating is a nightmare to keep clean and potentially disgusting and sticky after a few years which is why I went with the Retro. This is my first box outside of the Elektron world so I'm feeling pretty intimidated. I have a an A4, OT, DT and DN, and I really get along with the workflow but Elektron has a sound that I'm just not in love with. It works... I make it work, but I'm trying to get something a bit different and I think branching out could help. Fingers crossed. Thanks for the great videos and in particular this review, it was very helpful.

Hey Tefty, thanks for making the comparison video, I hope you get a lot from your new MPC Live 2. I don’t know why the synth community get dismissive about electronic gear and speakers. If gear has inbuilt speakers it says portable to me, not amateur. They’re never going to replace studio monitors, they’re there to give you a guide or feel of how your production is progressing. The OP-1, Volcas, Casiotones like the new CT-S1000V and Pocket Operators have speakers and they’re all portable to facilitate making music wherever you go. I can see the rationale behind the MPC Live 2 which is ideal for gigging. As I don’t gig, investing in an MPC One, its price, facilities, small footprint and the possibility of adding a Tascam Model 12 (as per your excellent demo) in my home studio are a very appealing alternative to relying on my Cubase. Thanks again.

For me it's the exact opposite. I first bought an original MPC Live and I didn't really gel with it. At first I tought it was my fault that the pad sometimes are not very responsive, but as I watched others on RU-vid using the MPC Live 1, it occurred to me it might not be. A week ago I bought an MPC One and man, this is a night and day difference. Pads are much more responsive and also the touch screen works much better compared to the Live 1. And to be honest, I like the formfactor more of the MPC One but that's just a personal preference.

Program Edit is the only button I really miss on the MPC Live 2. I wish the firmware would allow you to reassign useless buttons like Plus and Minus for that. Other than that I would argue that the Live 2 has as good of a or even a better workflow vs the MPC One because of the more practical placement of the touchscreen and q-link wheels.

Great comparison video! Out of curiosity, given that you have accumulated more experience working with the MPC, are you still utilizing/incorporating the Digitakt with it (in reference to your Digitakt/MPC1 video)? Also, do you feel it (the Digitakt) is still a relevant companion, now that you have a more mobile option with the Live 2?
@TeftyMeems
@TeftyMeems 3 года назад
Yup, still use the Digitakt. The way I approach things is modular in nature, so I’ll grab a few pieces of gear and make some music with them. Changing things up sparks new creativity. So when I go to or away from the Digitakt, I’ve got fresh inspiration. That being said, as a DAW’less hub, the Live 2 is nearly perfect.

Probably the One to keep the size down. But the Live 2 is basically the same functionality.

My favorite thing about the Live 2 retro is that they don’t coat it with that rubberized matte finish that rots in a few years, leaving you with a tacky, scraped hair magnet.

Yeah that’s why I sent my live 2 back and bought the one. That rubber coating was shocking. Complete dust and finger print magnet. Didn’t realise the retro was smooth, might draw me back in.

The battery of Litium has some obsolescence embedded on it in the long haul the battery crashes down and then it'll turn out to be a kaput

Are the transpose buttons play record stop etc on the MPC One the same quality as the Akai MPD series pad controllers? They were always very stiff to me. Thank you

I'm still torn! I like the idea of being able to jam with an acoustic guitar to your beats, but a simple portable speaker with the MPC ONE would do the same thing for half the price. I don't think I'd get enough couch use or need to use it in the great outdoors, so maybe the MPC ONE is a better fit for me after all. I really do like the look of the LIVE II pads over the MPC ONE though!

Great video, but one correction. You can actually use any effect on the input inserts to act as a pre amp. Up to four, and they work very well.
@TeftyMeems
@TeftyMeems 3 года назад
Hi Ebb! Thanks for the comment. However, those effects happen after the A/D conversion process. A true preamp would amplify the signal before the A/D converters and give a proper line level. Amp the signal with plugins is going to bring up a lot of noise floor in the signal 👍 (but that might sound cool, too 🤔)

You failed to mention that the live has a built in sata bay for increased data SSD space
@TheTerracide
@TheTerracide 2 года назад
Yeah mainly the Live 2 has SSD, speakers, battery, more outputs (including phono inputs), bigger pads, more pre-installed samples, WiFi and BT and USB 3.0 vs the MPC one: USB2, no SSD(but has fast SDcard reader) , no speakers, no battery, more buttons, less pre-installed samples, smaller padsize, LAN connector (no wifi or BT) less outputs (but expandable with external soundcard since firmware 2.10). Basicly if you use an MPC in a studio setup the ONE is a great choice. If you wanna hit the road with it you might wanna checkout the Live 2

Great video, thanks. I'm a Maschine MK3 user and I'm evaluating an alternative standalone setup like Maschine + or....MPC Live 2 ! What do you think about Maschine + ? Any suggestion considering that the Maschine + vs MPC LIve 2 prices are similar ? The MPC touch screen is really a plus I think, and Maschine + (without it) become too expensive ...Thanks

lol 20 minutes of GAS justification! XD. You sound like me talking my wife into my next gear buy. Clicky buttons>rubber buttons for memory muscle and speed. Also I had to sand my MPC touch last year because the rubber became goo. Then I painted it OC. Layout ONE>LIVE the screen on the side is a game breaker. Im eager to go back to a screen above the pads just as the 1000 the 2000 and so on

As an option, I'd suggest looking into a used mpc live mk1, since it is probably cheaper than a new One. If you never leave the studio and are on a tight budget (but have a computer), the mpc Touch is also an interesting option. Oh and did you know that you can put an ssd in the live (mki and mkii)? More robust and faster than sd cards. And if you don't, you can put your weed in there.
