AKAI VHS Made in Japan, 1987, model VS-240EV.
It was heavily used from 1989 to 2003 when it got retired. Took it out of storage to restore and repair. First noticed that it needed new belts, then, after replacing belts, found that the idler wheel (clutch) also needed new rubber. Replaced it and it is now capable to pull back the tape, rewind and fast forward.
Another rubber part that was worn out: the pinch roller. Unfortunately couldn't find replacement for that one, so I used sandpaper 2000 grit to make it a bit less shinny and slippery. Any input about pinch roller would be welcome. Good news it that is very easy to replace the pinch roller on that unit.
Last, you can clearly hear on the video that the head drum ball bearing is worn and noisy. I hope it doesn't affect its RPM.
Special thanks to ‪@venceslasvillier5422‬
and ‪@_.pavlidisa._‬ for helping me on fixing this.

Yeah the drum is very noisy as mine two years ago. Mine is now blocked and doesn't start anymore.

This is bad news. Did you try to disassemble it? The thought of touching the drum scares me. Must be delicate mechanism

@@electronicwaves i try this time. I disassemble the drum and ball bearing. I ordered new. I've to put the new ball bearing but it's no so easy. I should use wd40
@electronicwaves
@electronicwaves Год назад
@@venceslasvillier5422 I am no expert for sure but WD40 is rarely good as a lubricant for applications like this. I use sewing machine oil, many also use regular car engine oil. It would be great if you posted a video showing the disassembled drum. Good Luck!

@@venceslasvillier5422 did you check the rotary transformer inside the head? These Akai suffered from the glue being disintegrated leaving the coils loose. Not only Akai VCRs. But almost all VCRs using thermal element near the head suffered this problem!

@@saint_and_holy_unicorn yes i've checked. I can't rotate the drum with my hand.

Did you try moving it with your hand to see if it can move freely or not? Sometimes they get stuck due to inactivity but spinning them manually fixes it.

@@Altamira-Arazz I wish i could help you but I am located in Greece. You could try uploading a video on RU-vid showing the issue and maybe someone with the same issue might help you. You can also post in technical forums on old analog devices. Another option would be to find the same or similar model for cheap and use it as a donor to get the parts needed to fix your unit. I don't know about Turkey but this AKAI was quite common here in Greece. I wish you best of luck

Did you spot any dark-brown particles around the head drum before cleaning the unit? Is so, the glue inside the head is dead. The noise you hear from the head is not the bad bearing, but the coils touching each other... At least in my case that happened!
@electronicwaves
@electronicwaves Год назад
Good piece of info. No, I haven't spot particles around the head drum. The noise reminds me somehow of how the ball bearing of the right front wheel of my car sounded when it went bad. That's the reason I believe it's the ball bearing.
@saint_and_holy_unicorn
@saint_and_holy_unicorn Год назад
@@electronicwaves maybe its the bearing then, who knows... All 7 80's VCRs I've recently checked they all had bad glue.. Its very sad because everytime you use the unit, you risk to destroy the head drum and it's not an easy fix! Once i tried to re-glue the coils inside and i made a mess 😢😢 Hope it's not your case... All these old machines are showing their age...
@electronicwaves
@electronicwaves Год назад
@@saint_and_holy_unicorn honestly, it's surprising that they still work so good. We are talking about ~40years old machines with mechanical parts and very delicate mechanisms. Engineers back then knew how to design machines to last.
