He was born in the Congo around 1883 and belonged to the Mbuti people, a pygmy tribe. In 1904, Benga was brought to the United States by an American explorer named Samuel Verner, who had participated in a controversial expedition to Africa. Benga's presence at the Bronx Zoo was part of an exhibit called the "Monkey House," where he was displayed alongside primates in a degrading and racially insensitive manner. This incident highlighted the deeply problematic attitudes of the time towards racial and cultural differences. Benga's captivity and exhibition led to outrage from some quarters and eventually led to his release. Ota Benga's story is a painful reminder of the historical mistreatment and exploitation of marginalized groups.

If epitaphs could be raps, I'd have this song on mine. Great reaction but this song just speaks volumes and holds profound meaning that most people miss. I literally tear up every time this song plays and those of us who truly relate to the lyrics know what I mean. I really wish you had reacted to the track version instead of the live version so that you could hear their words better through the whole song. How Lowkey just casually enters into the song with absolutely soul-shattering words: "...Behind my smile there's generations of pain, Self-hatred ingrained miseducated my brain, Decimated the place where my dead relations were slain, Not just physically but mentally penetrated our veins..." and then Akala comes in and says "..What a strange contradiction To grow up brown in the West and know that your living... Was paid for by a carcass that resembles yours, Born in the heart of the empire...you're worth more than I was just like you, But less then the native ones... Raised by my mum but in this world I am a father's son..." Those of us who come from parents and ancestors who had to survive racism and oppression of any or every other kind and then to carry all that trauma and continue to persevere amongst the oppressors; those words just hit home. Hard.
