I worried about the same thing before coming here and I was luckily enough to have some monetary support from my parents at first but my first couple months were really tough cause I hadn't saved up that much money and I was still trying to get used to my new life so I wasn't really looking for a job. I highly suggest that you save up enough money for your first 3 or 6 months (preferably 1,000$ a month or so depending on your spending habits) and then once you've settled to your new life in Japan you can decide if you want to start looking for a job without worrying about paying bills and stuff. I think it's definitely possible to make enough money to pay for rent & bills if you get a high paying job (i.e. part time English teaching which is a great job cause you don't need Japanese) and if you look for an apartment that has really cheap rent too that helps. Hope that answered your question! ^_^

1. Most classes have a maximum of 20 people and there is some conversation practice in the book that we use to practice but they focus more on real life conversation practice once you entered the beginner intermediate class. 2. I'm no sure what exactly you mean by yardsticks... however I do definitely feel like my Japanese has improved thanks to my class. Especially my kanji! The one on thing I wish we did more often was reading essays because I want to improve my speed but that's just a personal goal of mine. 3. The first beginner class uses the first books of minna no nihongo and the second beginner class uses the second book. If you finish and master both books then you'll probably get a good score on the placement test you'll probably be eligible for the Beginner/Intermediate or Intermediate 1 class! Hope that helped! Good question! I actually really liked the combination of the school being high intensity for such a low price! Another thing I liked were the various dorm options because I knew I wanted to live close to the school no matter what and I knew that dorms were my best option for that. I also did some research about the neighbourhood of the school and the dorms. Everything seemed to be really close by and the neighbourhood seemed to be really safe too! I think it's a great place to go especially for people coming to japan for the first time! :)

I actually had a single room at the Nippori Dorm and my rent was about 450,000 yen a month but the price might have changed by now so you might have to double check on the school website!

That's a really good question! When I first came to Japan it was definitely easier for me to make english speaking friends and I didn't use Japanese outside of class that much but that's mostly just cause I was too shy. However I eventually got a part time job that allowed me to speak Japanese more often and I made some Japanese friends too. So I think getting a job is an excellent way to push your Japanese skills and speak as often as possible when you come here!

Yeah you can definitely receive mail at the dorms! As for rent, you only have to pay for the first 3 months all at once, then after that you just have to pay once a month and it's always one month ahead of time so you should be fine! You won't need a letter or anything! 😄

Lol 😂 First off your comment is hilarious and secondly, I have to say that I highly suggest going for 3 months before committing for a longer time cause that's exactly what I did! & as for the homework, at first you do get a lot but the longer you keep studying there the less homework you get, so I think it's totally possible to juggle a part time job at the same time as long as your first job is flexible schedule-wise and allows you to work just a couple days a week to start off! P.S. If you come for just 3 months you won't be allowed to work so keep that in mind!

Thanks for the question! When you first arrive at Akamonkai you take a placement test and then they assign you a class. As far as I know there are no 6 month programs though unfortunately.... Hope that helps! :)

Nope! You don’t have to pay it all at once! I’m pretty sure you only need to pay one forth of the tuition every 3 months!

Hey! Thanks for the question! I actually sent you a more in depth response by email but to sum it up, Japanese school doesn't really have after school clubs like colleges/universities do but they have a lot of events and class trip that they offer on a semesterly and/or monthly basis. On top of that people do make an effort to hang out with each other outside of school. Of course it depends in the person but most people who have free time will stay and hang out with each other after school! I personally think that if you're interested in meeting new people and hanging out while practicing your Japanese, both college and Japanese school will give you that opportunity so it really depends on what you're interested in! :)

Are the school events at Akamonkai paid for by the school or does each individual student need to pay for his or herself?

For student visas there's obviously going to be some kind of screening process but I'm pretty sure the requirements aren't that out of the ordinary. If you don't have a criminal record and you're from a country that is eligible to receive Japanese student visas then there shouldn't be a reason for them to not give you a visa. If you've chosen a school that can apply on your behalf (like Akamonkai) then the chances of you getting a accepted for the visa is pretty high. I wouldn't be too concerned about that unless you think there's something in particular that would prevent you from getting the visa and if that's the case then you could maybe try contacting the Japanese embassy nearest to you and asking them directly weather they think you would be legible or not. Hope that answers your question :)

Yeah actually! There's a specific teacher who is in charge of helping students find part time jobs and if your interested you just have to let her know what kind of job you're looking for and she'll show you some different options that you would be eligible to apply for. She'll most likely help you apply and prepare a little bit in advance too! I'm actually planning on searching for a part time job on my own first and then if I'm not able to find anything then I'll definitely go through the school! :D

I don't think they technically are allowed to, but ultimately I think it wouldn't be a problem as long as you've paid the full tuition amount by the deadline.

HEMANT KUMAR SHARMA that’s a great question! It’s definitely possible to do a part time job while doing the high intensity class! I worked part time as an English teacher which is a great job because it doesn’t require any Japanese and it typically pays very well too!

@@TheHazinaGirl as my English is not that much good so if I want to do a store job or any other job so after how how much time I can apply for it because these types of jobs requires basic Japanese?

HEMANT KUMAR SHARMA honestly that just depends on how long it takes you to feel confident enough to comfortably speak Japanese! For most people it takes roughly 3-6 months to become conversational but it differs from person to person...

HEMANT KUMAR SHARMA classes are 5 days a week and I think study time really depends on each person... At first it took me roughly 1 hour to get my daily homework done but after a year or so I was able to get my homework done in less than 15 minutes... in my experience it gets easier with time!

Akamonkai is totally fine with you working a part time job as long as you have the appropriate visa. If you only have a 3 month tourist visa then legally you can't work but if you get a student visa then you'll be allowed to work for a maximum of 28 hours a week and you'll be able to get assistance from the school to find a job as well! :) I personally waited a couple months before getting a part time job just so that I could get used to the school's work flow first. Then once I got my first part-time job in Japan it was kind of tough to balance work and school at first but I eventually found a job that worked for me and now I have a great schedule that allows me to do both. So I would definitely say that it depends on how you schedule your time and it also depends on what kinda of part-time job you want to do as well. Hope that helped! :)

I'm already studying at Akamonkai! I will most likely be here until March of 2017 so I might see you :) If you spot me around make sure to say hi! ^_^ Also I actually just realise that on the school website it says that it's 355,000Yen for 6 months so sorry about that mistake...however the course I was referring to is the University Prep course since that's what I plan on taking. The price of your course will vary on the length and the type of course you want to take. I definitely suggest checking the akamonkai website to get exact price quotes!

Honestly, the best tip I can give you is to show your parents how much coming to Japan means to you. Save up money on your own, do lots of research etc. They will eventually realise that this is something that you care about and that you're very serious about it too! Even though they might be scared for you at first they'll eventually come around and become supportive because they'll know that once you move to Japan you'll be living somewhere that makes you happy!
