This Video is based on my recent visit to Akbar’s Tomb Sikandra Agra. This is the place where burials of Mughal emperor Jalaluddin Akbar are present. In this Video, I will be telling you about the History of Akbar’s Tomb in Hindi. This tomb is known to be an important Mughal architectural masterpiece. It was started by Akbar in 1602 and after Akbars death in 1605 the construction work was continued by his son Jahangir(Salim) and it took 8 more years from the year 1605-1613 for completion of the tomb. It is located in 119 acres of grounds in Sikandra, a locality of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India.
History of Akbar’s Tomb:
The most special thing about this tomb is that Akbar himself planned the tomb and selected a suitable site for it and started the construction of it while he was alive. So, the main question is Akbar’s Tomb was built by whom? After Akbar’s death, Akbar's son Jahangir completed the construction work of the tomb from 1605-1613. During the reign of Aurangzeb, Jats from Bharatpur rose in rebellion under the leadership of Raja Ram Jat. Mughal prestige suffered a huge blow when Jats ransacked the Tomb of Akbar the Great, plundering as well as looting the gold, jewels, silver and carpets. It is said that that even Akbar's grave was opened and his bones were burned. As Viceroy of India, when George Curzon came into power, extensive repairs and restoration of Akbar's mausoleum were done, which were completed in the year 1905. Curzon planned for restoration of the Akbar’s Tomb and other historical monuments in Agra in connection with the passage of the Ancient Monuments Preservation Act in 1904, according to which he described the project as "an offering of reverence to the past and a gift of recovered beauty to the future".
Location (Where is the Tomb of Mughal Emperor Akbar located) :
It is located at Sikandra, in the suburbs of Agra, on the Mathura road (NH19), 8 km west-northwest of the Agra city center. At around 1 km away from the tomb, lies Mariam's Tomb, the tomb of Mariam-uz-Zamani, who was the wife of the Mughal Emperor Akbar and the mother of Jahangir(Salim).
Akbar’s Tomb Architecture :
The south gate of this tomb is the largest, with 4 white marble chhatri-topped minarets which are similar to (and pre-date) those of the Taj Mahal, and is the usual point of entry to the tomb. The tomb is surrounded by a walled enclosure which lies in an area of 105 m square. The tomb building is a four-tiered pyramid that is surmounted by a marble pavilion which contains the false tomb. The true tomb, as in other mausoleums of Agra, is in the basement. The buildings are mainly constructed from a deep red sandstone, enriched with features in white marble. Decorated inlaid panels of these materials and a black slate adorn the tomb and the main gatehouse. Panel designs are geometric, floral and calligraphic, and prefigure the more complex and subtle designs later incorporated in Itmad-ud-Daulah's Tomb.
