Found it interesting that C414 is better at focusing on the sound source in front of it. The room reflections were more obvious on the NT1. It also has a less ear-fatiguing tone in my opinion. I own the NT1 and I like it, but upgrading to the OC818(heard it has a similar sound to the C414) might be worthwhile. Great Review.

Holy moly, hats off to the vocalist! He really helped me decide on the Rode NT1--at least while I am a novice with this type of mic use. I love both. The c414 is a step more "soft and intimate in its sound, but now think the Rose will help me control the noise from (novice) me and the room. When I'm more skilled or if my needs change, the more versatile sound from AKG c414 would be wonderful too.

Dude, your voice sound so good on those mics! I have one NT1 for my Zoom lessons and Twitch streams and 2 NT5´s for stereo recording. I always only record me with my french horn with the NT5´s, but I recently buy a Zoom F6 with more channels and was thinking to ad the NT1 to the mix with the NT5´s. But a friend of mine have a C214 and they sound great, and the idea of the -20db PAD was giving me some ideas... Maybe the PAD will be great to record a french horn or other brass instruments, because of the sound pressure. But I think, I would stick to my NT1 and experiment with it on the mix with the NT5´s. I never regret the choice I did buying the NT1, it sound amazing with some EQ and other things for streaming. Great video! Thanks fo sharing and keep doing more amazing videos!! :)

Thanks man! And honestly NT1 is really really good for horns, I've recorded a baritone clarinet with mine before and man it was THICK, I really like its sound. It doesn't overstate the high end of the instrument and make it glassy, but I've never tried it with a trumpet or french horn or anything anything. My guess is the c214 may give the NT1 a run for its money on higher register horns :)

You as a wind player may find this useful. I've used the NT1 and NT5 for recording flute both to great effect. I like them a lot; for different applications having both available is a great option. Recently I was gifted a Shure Beta27 and it seems to be the best single microphone I've found for my instrument so far, combining the full flat sound of the NT1 with the higher end detail of the NT5. The Beta27 has pads and filters. Where I am in Aussie the Rodes are still the best cheapest options but the Beta27 fell out of the sky so...Good luck with your music.

The C214 is a large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone conceived as a less-costly, cardioid-only version of the multipattern C 414B. The mic’s capsule is a 1-inch, edge terminated design, but although its superficial appearance is similar to the famous CK12 capsule, the C214’s capsule is a back-electret design It's not the same capsule as the 414.

imo, the polar pattern warfare on these newer microphones are getting a bit out of hand when cardioid is about the best option for most uses (with exception to interviewing) having a microphone that emulates your voice as accurately as possible like the NT1 means that post processing will never be a nightmare.
@AudioHaze
@AudioHaze 3 года назад
I agree and disagree! Yes, definitely cardioid is by far the most common use for microphones, and for anyone buying their first microphone, beyond interviews (as you said) there's no reason to worry about polar patterns. But, when we get into the studio environment, these different polar patterns play a big role in recording. Omni makes great room microphone tones, wide cardioid is great for drum sounds and choir, etc. But yes, in general when starting out one should not worry too much about the insane list of polar patterns the AKG has :)
@anonymusum
@anonymusum 2 года назад
I use two 414 XLS as room mics for recording classical choir or orchestra concerts - of course in omni mode. Then - if needed - I add cardioid mics for each group of singers or instrumentalists so that I can bring everything in volume balance while mixing afterwards. Without the two 414 I would lose the overall sound that´s really important. But to be fair, I bought them after I alreay had several mics. And by the way: the C414 is one of the most respected mics in the cassical world. Whenever you come to a recording session with them they all feel reassured that they picked the right guy.
@ramencurry6672
@ramencurry6672 2 года назад
Another advantage of the C414 is that it is so easy to find. This means if it ever gets damaged or stolen, it’s not the end of the world and you can find another one. In likelihood this mic will be available for the long future too. So in that sense, it makes it an extra reliable workhorse.

The Rode NT1 sounds pleasing on most female voices right out of the box, however, it can't be EQ'd to sound good on male bass/baritone voices in my experience. It's just waaay too muddy, not enough highs to balance it out. The AKG C414 XLS just sounds right out of the box, a way more versatile option overall, the highs sound buttery smooth on just about any voice. No mudiness in sight, slap a de-esser on it for sharper voices and you're all set, no need to touch the highs otherwise. P.S Used both microphones extensively for voice over for years.

Rode IMO has more focused and 3D warm sound. For different voices and different reasons both mics are great,and,of course,- in different rooms,- as every mic,- they will sound different. I owned both : Rode NT1 and AKG C 214. It took a lot of time with AKG to make my voice to sit properly in the mix, although i like how silky it sounds. So i still have Rode NT1. I compared at least it to 10 different mics. And especially in this price range it's still unbeatable .

I know that the the 214 is supposed to have the same capsule and sound the same as the 414 in cardioid mode (which is what most of us use most of the time), but to my ears it sounds vastly inferior. I don’t know why, but I love the 414 in cardioid mode and don’t like the 214 in the same mode at all. It should be the same, but it isn’t.

Such a great comparison. I've been binging your videos, and have been fixated on some mics. I have a bedroom setting with very little external noise, and some room treatment. I have only acoustic instruments (mandolin, acoustic guitar, flute, voice, a couple of hand drums). I really loved the lewitt 440 pure in your videos, and the akg c414 came close, too. Both are within my budget. But recently, I was completely blown away by how good the tlm107 sounded on acoustic instruments. Is there a budgeted option that sounds as good as the tlm107 does on acoustic instruments? Should I look at SDCs too (like the km184s?) If you could provide some advice, would really love to know.
@AudioHaze
@AudioHaze 3 года назад
Sure! So SDC's are a completely different microphone with different sound qualities, so I wouldn't go with that if you want to replicate the TLM 107 sound. But check out warm audio: warmaudio.com/microphones/ They specialize in vintage sounding microphones on a budget, most of them based off of Neumann designs. Hope that helps!

Hey! I've never tried the 414EB, but I've had quite a bit of experience with the XLS version and they're amazing, super versatile, you can use them for just about anything, and a very similar sound signature to the 214 just with more body and the midrange and a bit more refinement overall. In regards to the u87 vs u67, never had the chance to try the u67 (that would be amazing though), but the u87 is relatively versatile, I personally don't think as much as someone u87 lovers would have you believe, but they sound great :)

I own the nt1 besides a couple of higher priced mics like the neumann tlm103. I don't think the nt1 is that flat as it claims to be. it raises frequencies at around 10 kHz what makes de-essing quite challanging. also the transient response in the midrange isn't that fast or pleasant as with the neumanns or other studio standards. imo transient response is the shit in modern vocal mixing. but for the price, it is a really good choice. i only bought it, because i vape in my studio and needed a cheap decent condencer not being ruined by the deposit i sadly produce. you won't find any better one for this price.
@felixftp9670
@felixftp9670 Год назад
I can agree to 10kHz thing! I find it hard as well to de-essing my vocals on the rode nt-1. I was tired of this and thought about switching mic, got then the lewitt pure 440 and was really good for de-essing.

@@AudioHaze Something just came to mind. Quite a few years ago I was at a "trade show for lawyers" and there was a rep there from Xerox with a multifunction printer/scanner/fax/copier for something like $400-450. He was telling me he was frustrated because people used to spending many times that amount weren't taking it seriously. "Maybe if we added another zero they would," he said. Sometimes something can be very good at a reasonable price and we can bypass it because we have been programmed to think that higher price=higher quality. Not always so. The SM58 for $99 is a tremendous microphone. And at $294 the Rode NT1 is, too (I added $25 for the RM2 mic clip and a windscreen if you don't want to deal with the behemoth shock mount). Are they perfect? Nope. Do they have all the bells and whistles of some of the fancier stuff? Nope (and sometimes thankfully so). But they do the job and do it consistently well.
