Akio's Street Racing Addiction Begins | The "Devil Z" Returns! Wangan Midnight 

I love it how they romanticized how undrivable the s30 Z was when Akio first got it; how it was cursed and thirsty for the blood of whoever drove it, when in reality its chassis was so beat up from being too overpowered that the body can't really take that amount of abuse anymore.

Funny how the Devil Z became one of the tamest cars in the latter parts with the Blackbird becoming the hard to control monster.

I used to have this 1990 Corolla. It was my grandparents. They let me use it to learn in and eventually I ended up with it. Little did I know it's past before it came to me. My grandparents had bought it new, so it didn't have many k's (miles) on it when it got to me, but it had a troubled history. My grandfather came around a corner one day and got hit with sunstrike and rear ended another car. The front end had to be fully rebuilt, but they got it done as it was still new back then. Then my mother had an accident where a car tried to U-turn in front of her. Again it had some major damage but it was covered under insurance as it wasn't her fault so it was fixed. My father was then involved in an accident in it when someone pulled in front of him from a sidestreet. For a third time it got repaired because it wasn't his fault so the insurance covered it. Finally it becomes mine and, you guessed it. I get into a head on with an idiot on a motorbike pulling a wheel stand around a blind corner on the wrong side of the road and it totals the front end. My mother has had enough of this car and sends it to get scraped, with much protest from myself, it was my first car and my pride and joy. The damage this time was too much to be fixed, but it was heartbreaking. Anyway it gets sent to be turned into scrap metal. Never to be seen again. Until about 2 years later I see it driving down the road. It turns out the scrappy was a mechanic and had fixed it up. THE VERY NEXT DAY I see it on the back of a tow truck. It had been hit by a truck and the back seats were in the front it had been hit so hard. That car had a death wish. I get the same feelings when I see the Z. Some cars are possessed.

Akio is not just some idiot driving in a straight line, he has *LIT* skills to drive the devil Z which is about 600hp

Intial D is about street drifting/racing in mountains, well Wangan Midnight is about street racing in highways or doing pull ups

On 11:05 you can see that as Akio speeds up, he feels like "time slows down". In fact, this is a real physics thing, the faster you are the slower the time is for you. It is called "time dilation" and the problem is, to achieve it you need to have speed around speed of light. This now is, unreal, fantastic. Akio couldn't drive S30Z with SUCH speed but that adds a fine addition into showing how fast Devil Z actually was and how good this anime is

Everybody says that the blue Z is evil but I think the blackbird is a serial killer

Looking at this car in anime, when you see in reality it cost half a million US Dollars or more than Half of that.. Even it was possesses by the devil.... The real life counter part of the Devil Z was a 1990's Midnight club Nissan S30Z by ABR with 680 BHP producing 600 BHP on a wheel with a swap L28E bore and stroke installed with fuel injected, with HKS twin turbo for R33 GT-R. most of that part came from the Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R including the the breaks front and rear. The BlackBird in real life was the Yoshida Special Porsche 930, the rumors said the owner spend 2 Million U$ Dollars trying to replicate the speed of the RuF CTR-B Yellow Bird at that time. The reason is that The Yellow bird has been sold out before his gonna buy so he buy an old Porsche 930 and tune it, even it produce 750 BHP it only goes 211.92 Mph not close to the Ruf Yellow Bird top speed of 225 Mph that only has 560 BHP. So those car in this anime will only be in a dream.

Honestly when you twin turbo any car that has a similar weight ratio it feels like all the other cars drive super slow. Every turn handles smooth and the speed. Its none stop.

Initial D and Wangan Midnight always start with the main character's vehicle being referred to as a ghost

Man re looking the series i wish there was a prequel that showed Tatsuya becoming the "emperor of wangan" bc he seemed like a totally different person in the past being shown to be very vocal and worrying about asakura and his sister while in the present he is ultra quiet and almost never talks a lot Asakura's death probably changed him a lot bc like he said "he dosent stop to any crash he sees even when his old best friend's sister is together in a car that killed said friend after they crash

One thing that gets me is: a lot of the Z's problems, if you strip away the Japanese superstition and Akio not being able to take his foot off the gas (have a possible explanation for that one too) and whatever, sound symptomatic of a car that just doesn't have enough structural rigidity to handle its own engine output, and S30s are seemingly known for becoming flimsy when faced with power significantly in excess of stock. At least, that was the stated reason a commenter elsewhere had for cracking on people's low-effort V8 swaps; they tend not to reinforce the chassis enough to cope with the extra torque. But then you see this Z and it already has a roll cage. So how is it still so flimsy?

One thing about a 240 & 280Z with 600 HP in real life is the tendency to fish tail do to the cars light weight and as an FR with that much horsepower can make it spin out

I always thought that this is a 1990's anime, but to know that this is actually a 2007 anime does show the vast difference in terms on anime production compared to the likes of Gurren Lagann and Lucky Star from the same year.
