+anthony arguelles I watched the movie first and came across the manga one day when I was in a bookstore. As I flipped through the pages I thought to myself "holy crap, this is nothing like the movie. There's so much more in this!" I still have all the books on my shelf and never get tired of rereading them.
The mutants aren't artificially aged up. Their growth is artificially stunted. They've gotten old since the experiments, but the drugs they take haven't allowed them to age past childhood. Hence why they're wrinkly kids who weren't allowed to mature. And Kaneda and Tetsuo have wider character arcs. Tetsuo starts off as a good guy at the very beginning. Turns into a monster by the end. Kaneda is an asshole at the start, learns to be an adult and hero by the end.
@C Tski Being hand-drawn doesn’t have anything to do with it. It’s the fact the animators didn’t half-ass their job and actually gave it with an acceptable frame rate, real mouth movement, decent multi-layer parallax scrolling, lively background extras and set pieces, and other bits of attention to detail. It doesn’t come off as cheap like most other anime. Then again, that’s the kind of product you should expect from something with a competent budget.
@@ChunkSchuldinga The budget was actually pretty huge for a sci-fi OVA. Tons of cells, great animators. IMHO it was one of the big budget great stuff that came out from Japan before the Economy there went to sh*t.
yeah, I feel like they're artificially inflating the length by saying "2,000" pages, and then saying a HORRIBLE comparison of "90 American comic issues monthly for 8 years." 6 manga volumes really isn't long by any stretch, and I don't get why they acted like it is.
I remember watching this as a kid.... I don't remember much but the ending where tetsuo turns in Satan's baby. That's when I cried from fear. Seriously.
I was 25 years old when I watched Akira for the first time and I did the same exact thing! It is truly disturbing no matter how old you are if you never seen anything like it before. Awesome Anime!
@@zaqgt5 It was better(less horrific) in the manga. *SPOILERS* She got shot while trying to save him which resulted in him going into rage mode. Her life up until that point is fucked, but her end was less... Eldritch.
Two things to add to the differences between the manga and movie: Akira's "nuke blast" isn't actually a destructive explosion. It's actually some sort of giant "time portal" that absorbs everything into some sort of other dimension. Kaneda gets sucked into the first explosion halfway through the books and reappears again later (with the rest of the city) when Akira "nuked" the city again. He doesn't seem to have no recollection of where he was since he disappeared. Also in the end of the book series the ending was much more optimistic and nationalistic. The city ruins were slowly reforming back into fully constructed buildings as they rode into the distance. The movie left the fate of Neo-Tokyo kind of ambiguous.
I don't think CineFix has done _any_ of the Part 2s that they have promised to do if they got enough thumbs up. I'm sure it takes a *lot* of research to do each of these episodes. I just wish they hadn't teased us so many times without following through at least _once_. :/ Edit: They did it with The Walking Dead TV series/comics. As far as I know, that's the only one they've done... :/
Steven Bishop The manga gives you everything the movie denies you. SPOILER: I can only say. Akira is alive and well. It's not a series of "organs" conserved in vitro.
This would be amazing as a full series. No bullshit, no filler, just source material. But only, _ONLY_ if they get TOP animators for the whole thing. Hand draw literally everything possible, from smoke effects to energy--it's al important.
that's imposible. everytime a studio tries that with a 2hr movie goes bankrupt. the only way it could be adapted is with berserk style cgi mixed with 2d animation. the golden arc one.
Holy fucking Hell, AKIRA needs to be rebooted or remade but in Anime form and true to its manga roots! Maybe a three part movie with 2hour 30mins per movie. Akira incomplete version was awesome already, just imagine if people got to watch a true completed version!
nodinitiative That'd be like what they did with the Berserk: Golden Age movies they made last year. Although, it'd work better for Akira because Akira as a whole is only 6 volumes versus Berserk's 12 for a single arc. This needs to happen. Hell, they'd make a shit ton of money from it.

Well it's clear they need to make a "Akira: Complete or Redux or Remastered or Reborn". I'm sure there are a ton of animators and studio that would like to take their best shot at this classic. They would clearly need at least two maybe three parts to this epic. Making it a mini series would be ideal (4,6 or more episodes to fully explore and explain the Akira universe). All they animators would have to keep in mind is to be true as possible to both the movie and the manga in style and in story.
I remember first watching this, knowing nothing about it but figured from the box art it would be about motorcycle racing or something. Yeah.... boy was I wrong. Still, I was cool with it until the end, which is where I found that I had no fucking idea what was going on.

The most notable scene in the Akira movie that was etched in the back of my mind and scarred me for most of my childhood elementary school years was the sight of Kaori getting crushed into mulch due to Tetsuo's overgrowth of bio-organic matter. In present 2019, I did not know how much more I missed in not reading the Akira manga but I am hype to do so since Cinefix sold me with that 1:53 description :)
If you watch that scene again, Lady Miyako did not get a male voice dub. She is actually chanting and the voice you hear is the man standing in front of her.

After reading it, I can say for sure that the Anime is so different from the manga both story and character-wise. It’s as different as for example, DC and Marvel comics to their film and animation adaptations.
Clearly we need a live action, 27-hour adaptation with an all-Japanese cast (with Ken Watanabe as the Colonel, naturally), a Hans Zimmer score and a Alejandro Jodorowsky for director.
I dont even get why you ask the viewers to want a part 2, you never do them so why delude the viewers? I love your stuff guys but still dont make offers you cant keep.
My favorite part of the manga was Tetsuo walking amidst the ruins, making his way towards Akira after the boy destroyed Tokyo and then ascended to the sky It was so legendary! I perceived the duo as God (Akira) and his angel (Tetsuo)
Fun Fact Loosely Related: Batman Mask of The Phantasm had a little head nod to Akira. In the movie Bruce Wayne is still considering whether or not to become Batman. He's interrupted from his musings by a biker gang threatening a guy with a cash box. At one point in the battle Bruce Wayne charges one of the Bikers. He steps on the fender of the motorcycle (while it's running towards him mind you) and punches the guy in the face forcing him to dismount. Same as the scene you saw at around 11:37 Of course comicbook Karma couldn't allow such a cool move like that to go unpunished so Bruce gets distracted by the reminder his girlfriend Andrea was watching the fight and he gets hit In the chest by a bat being swung by another Biker on his motorcycle.
we recently did an anime video where there was a word pronounced in too anglicized a way and people went ballistic on us for days so i think i'm a little pronunciation jumpy hahaha
Finally watched this yesterday and I was in awe. This was a very gritty movie and the music was just amazing. The opening scene when there was no sound and the gong played....BRAVO
I like more the characters in the manga because they are deeper and more developed tetsuo will be more bastard but it is more for the circumstances and those moments he has with kaori are very good kaneda although in both versions is a fool in the manga is he sees more vengeful and motivated what makes him feel a relevant character and kei is what I like most of all in what has been construction in addition to the manga has those epic moments that the film just manages to reference a shame that the 88 is just the shadow of what is the original is still good as an independent film and AKIRA in general is a great and very good franchise.
I want to add that the original manga used zero digital alterations. That meant that the dialogue was handwritten making the manga very hard to read on top of being super long!
I found akira in my big brother's room (the dvd and manga) I watched the movie, thought it was so cool and then I read the manga and finished it In one go. It was so engrossing but I didn't realise that was only the first volume and there were actually 6 or 7 more. I wanna read them so bad 😭
I think the movie stands on its own and in some ways surpasses the manga. Kaneda in the manga wouldn't be out of place in Alex DeLarge's gang he is a straight A asshole for half the story. And Tetsuo is completely unlikable, he has some redeeming moments towards the end but the movie really depicts him as a bullied kid power tripping while in the manga he's a total monster. But above all the military in the manga are depicted as bumbling fools with the Colonel as the shouting idiot who can't rope in his soldiers whereas in the movie the Colonel is a commanding presence. So I recognize the manga as a seminal piece of art with great action scenes but the movie stands well as a great science fiction film. You can separate it from its source and it stands perfectly well on its own. I can't say that for a lot of adaptions.
I get where your coming, the manga much better in regard of grey shades of morality especially when the conflict starts to get complicated. The manga reminds you Kaneda is a gang member sure he has likeable qualities his no hero he just the lesser of two evils when compared to the oppressive and corrupt government. This reinforced throughout the manga his whole goal is killing Testuo and just getting even. Testuo humanised to a degree, but manga doesn't try to justify actions with his sad backstory but rather make you understand his circumstances. In fact manga he grows slighly in wisdom and maturity. As for the Conenel his alot more complex actually has admirable goal of trying to keep Japan safe, actions to get there come at the expanse of people's lives. As the story progresses he starts to develop into an anti-hero. Talking about badassery and taking charge nothing in anime top his epic display during post-apocalyptic arc of the manga.
So fucking happy Akira is actually getting an anime series adaptation it deserves by the manga writer himself, and it's SUNRISE of all studios that are doing it!!!
+Samuel Dillinger i heard leonardo di caprio holds the movies rights to Akira. but chris nolan did borrow heavy on manga influences in Inception. notably Paprika(2006) by Satoshi Kon. Person i hope that a western remake doesn't happen. oldboy by spike lee was dreadful.

Dominick Angel Yeah I totally agree. Sometimes i wish Akira was made into an anime series instead of a movie. It could be based exactly off the manga, and it wouldn't even have to be that long, only I'd say about 15 or 20 episodes.
This video mentions that the ending scenes are the same but in the anime they drive into a ruin of Tokyo but in the manga, while they initially drive into a ruin the last few panels show the city rebuilding itself around them. The suggestion is that some or all of the people still in Tokyo have the psychic abilities of Akira and co.
And they should've did 20th Century Boys last year! (That was actually when I read it! A much more menacing and mysterious Thanos, also the year the latter's movie came out XD)
