Akita 🐕 versus bear 🐻

This happened less than 150 yds from my house. The two brown bears wandered off into the woods and the encounter ended in a nice, anticlimactic way and we walked the rest of the way home.
If one wonders why I didn’t try calling my dog back, I didn’t want to incite the sow into chasing my dog which could have run back to me.
We’ve got a ton of bears around town and it gets old running into them. They are practically pests and my dog has chased them off before.

That makes a total sense! I don’t like going out into the woods without him. He’s chased off many bears over the years and does it while being quiet and without drama. I like that he never starts barking incessantly at wildlife but will get between me and large animals like bears and moose. I rely on watching his behavior to alert me to large animals being close by.

@@thatalaskaguy Very smart to not go into the wood without your Akita, and please, along with your bear spray always bring a firearm and a large knife. This dog breed are originally hunting dog in Japan, and are meant to help hunt or fend off bear attack. Note: That does not mean it can fight, and kill a bear by itself. It's purpose is to warn you, distract the bear so you can kill it, help you fend off a attack, or scare the bear away. Unless you got a retarded dog, just let this breed do what it was instinctually made to do when you, or it see a bear, or other large predator. If a bear attack you (Emphasis on the you), and you get away, because your dog fought so you can get away. If the dog body is consume, you need to let your local hunter know to track down this bear and kill it, because it probably see human as prey.

@@igot2remember thanks for the info on the breed. I had bear spray with me at the time and always carry it with me when walking or biking on the paths and trails around and near my house as I’m in a rural area. If I’m going out into the woods to cut/maintain or scout out new trails I always take a gun with me along with my Akita. You are 100% right, he always lets me know when bears, another larger animal or pretty much anything else is around. What I get annoyed with is the large number of bears my local government allows to roam free around and through our neighborhoods. People look at you funny if you’re always packing a gun to use the bike path even though it’s totally legal to do so. Plus it rains a lot here and I don’t want to clean and dry off a gun every time they walk my dog in the rain which is twice per day. It’s definitely a unique Alaska “problem“ but it’s only a matter of time before somebody gets mauled by one of the local bears and people will then look at our current wildlife management program differently. Hopefully it isn’t a young child who gets maimed or killed. Sometimes it would be nice to just be able to go for a walk or bike ride without constantly having to be vigilant about nearby bears.

Although it appears to of worked out for you on this occasion, the way you handled this goes against bear expert recommendations. You endangered your dog, yourself, and the bears by allowing your dog to chase the bears. Often times dogs will seek out the bear and then come racing back to their human when the bear decides to defend itself and cub. This often draws an enraged bear back to the human resulting in the human getting attacked. Sows with cubs are the absolute most dangerous of all brown bears. Most bears do not automatically see humans as a grave threat, but they do see dogs as a grave threat. Hikers with dogs are statistically MUCH more likely to get attacked by a bear than hikers without dogs because of what I just described. I have worked as a backcountry guide in SW AK. You got lucky. Keep your dog close next time. The following video is an evidence based analysis of how and why dogs cause bear attacks: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IChXIFUX6qU.htmlsi=mcoVpxykUhTwINhZ

How did you come away with me “encouraging” my dog? I didn’t want to start yelling and divert the sow’s attention onto me. My dog can run a heck of a lot faster than I can and is way more agile and maneuverable. When encountering bears the experts say to hold your ground. I didn’t want to call him back as I was afraid that might incite the chase response in the bear and bring it right to me. I had bear spray with me but certainly didn’t feel confident or comfortable that I was not in any danger. You weren’t in the situation and I suspect you don’t live in a location where bear encounters are common. I run into bears on an almost weekly basis in the summer. This took place 100-200 yds from my house right next to a proper subdivision. It wasn’t like I was in the middle of a National park in remote wilderness. We have way more bears in my town now than we did even 10 years ago. They are a nuisance and having dogs haze them is much better than the bears attacking people. I’m sick and tired of running into bears while walking around my neighborhood. It didn’t used to be this way but the hunting regulations changed (I’m not a hunter) and their numbers have greatly increased. It’s only a matter of time before someone is mauled or killed in our town. I don’t want that to happen but the mentality of “living with the bears” is flawed and dangerous and being condoned to attract tourists. It’ll be a very sad day when some young kid is mauled and disfigured and that is the event that causes our local government/law enforcement to rethink its “living with the bears” policy. I’m not going to be the guy that gets mauled or killed by a bear.
