Linda Logan of Kiseki Akitas, has been involed with the breed for nearly twenty years. She sat down with Dogumentary TV and shared her knowledge and passion for a breed that is a Japanese National Treasure.
The Akita is one of Seven Breeds designated as a National Monument in his native country of Japan. Bred as a versatile hunting dog in the rugged mountains of Northern Japan, the breed is a wonderful combination of dignity with good nature, alert courage and docility.
There is a spiritual significance attached to the Akita. In Japan they are affectionately regarded as loyal companions and pets, protectors of the home and a symbol of good health, when a child is born, the proud family will usually receive a small statue of an Akita signifying health, happiness, and a long-life. If a person is ill, friends will send a small statue of an Akita to express their wish for a speedy recovery.

AoToGo This lady clearly has bias which is understandable as she’s American. I’ve had Akitas both Japanese and Americans all my life. The “Japanese Akita” is actually called the Akita inu. The Akita inu is just as tall as the American however they aren’t usually as bulky. This said I’ve seen Akita inu’s who are larger than American Akitas in bone structure and overall size. It’s not true that the original Akitas in Japan were more similar to the American Akita of today in size and appearance. They were much more similar to the Akita inu which is why the Japanese separated the 2 breeds. They wanted specifically to go back to the original Akita before they were crossbred with other breeds like the Japanese Tosa for fighting purposes and the Americans crossbred them with even more breeds. This is why the Japanese Akita inu only comes in 3 colours, because they were the only colours the original Akitas came in. The Pinto and black coloured Alitas came from breeding with the Pinto Tosa and black mastiffs and German Shepard’s.

I believe both had GSD in them to keep them from being killed off by the Imperial Japanese govn't during WWII. I have heard that the American Akita does have some English Mastiff too but they both should have GSD...anyway, with selective breeding you can create anything as dog DNA is so mutable...hence why they seem to get cancer a lot.

My kids when they were babies used to climb up on my dogs grabbing fist fulls of fur to get up. When the dogs got tired of it they gently knock the kids down and put their paws on the kids back and lick them for tens of minutes. At night the male would lay at the end of the hall by the kids room doors and the female would sleep on my daughters bottom bunk. I've bred Akitas for 27 years and get accolades for my dogs temperament. My dogs have defended my family from home intruders and my little 85 lbs runt protected my daughter from a black bear. I'll never own another breed.

Xerin Knightwalker They definitely appear not to be an entry level dog so having prior pet experience would be amazing beforehand, they also seem to need heavy financial requirements due to needing large spaces and of course consuming more food. They also are tempered strangely so you must have an understanding of your dog in specific, make sure that you can afford this dog before buying one.

I had two Akita back in the 1980's. Both were gentle creatures especially with young children. Although they would pick up on if you liked a person or not and the demeanor would go to protective mode. Had a guy come to my door looking for a room mate of mine who wasn't home, said he would just come in and wait and I told him no, he started to push the issue and that is when my Akita male came up behind me and forcefully nudged between myself and the partially opened door with a deep low growl. Fellow jumped back, asked if the dog was always inside and then decided he'd just call when room mate was home.

So true, it is hard to relay to people the very low and powerful growl they have. Probably has to do with their large heads but it is very distinct...almost demonic. I haven't heard any other large breed dog with the same growl. When they bark, which is not that common, it is extremely loud and thunderous, to the point that it actually hurts our ears. Our walls literally vibrate/shake, no joke!

goku21youtub Likely due to being in the same region, they had the same adaptations, such as a generally thinner eye shape compared to the North American and European dogs and overall animal life. I don't know the exact reason but I do believe while in North America and Europe they needed the wider eyes to see better in darker environments, such as forests and caves, while in Japan and other Asian countries they had dealt with Bamboo forrests which are far thinner in foliage and Mountaind which usually have little cave life, at least from my experience.

Akitas are super observant- they love their families- and are very protective. I trust them unseen with my grandkids. They are stubborn, but affectionate to family. They should be socialized as much as possible- this will NOT negate their protectiveness- Akitas are smart as hell in this respect. They are hunters- yes. Gentle- short training sessions are best. This will work, but it take patience. Patience is a key with akitas- i was okay to begin with but these dogs taught me. Patience is paramount with akitas- they respect it- almost as if it were a physical thing. They are a are primitive feral breed, different from usual domestic dogs- but once you get to know and respect them- once you go akita- you never go back.

I have had 6 Akitas in my life . I love the breed. My newest boy Odin was born 10/31/18. They are loyal intelligent and very clean. I know when they bark something isn’t right. I once came home from work to find a man trapped on my roof, he was the cable guy. I had beware of dog signs which he saw but ignored when he whistled and no dog appeared he thought it was ok to come in the yard. He barely escaped being bit by my dog Ninja. He was up there for 2 hours. He said Ninja never once barked but his growl scared the crap out of him. He said He never heard or saw him until he heard a low growl and turned around and saw my 115 pound dog he thanked god he was able to pull himself up on the roof. Ninja then calmly peed ,kicked his back legs found his shady spot and proceeded to nap. Every time the guy would move elsewhere on the roof Ninja would follow. This was in Las Vegas during the summer so it was well over 100. The poor idiot learned his lesson I hope.

I adopted my female America Akita at 5months old after my sweet cocker spaniel passed away at 14. Cleo is the sweetest girl to humans and is a wonderful big sister to my Shepard/Boxer mix Joe.(also a rescue)I don’t worry about her around kids either.she has never shown any aggression towards humans unless she senses danger. SHe has a gentle mouth and doesn’t mind people around her when she eats at all. She is very smart,still playful,stubborn as a mule and lazy. She loves food. We have had some health issues but she solders on without complaint. I do not let her socialize with other dogs. But she has a very full life! Blowing of the coat is a real thing and incredibly time consuming and messy. Oddly, enough Cleo doesn’t like the vacuum cleaner on. He tried to bite me once (on my neck!) even though I was basically his 2nd owner (I took him for long walks and fed him often). Eventually he bit someone very severely and had to be put down. The second one was the biggest love sponge I've ever seen. Just a big, goofy, loveable, gentle giant. He was never neutered but nevertheless was very well behaved for the most part. Had many Akita's but one stands out more than the rest,Ted his full name was Ted-E-Bear Very good dog only thing I had an issue with was he liked to pull toilet paper all over the house,putt black pepper on the role and rolled it backup and waited,he started to pull the role and the pepper did it's job,he started to sneezing and dropped the paper and never touched it since, Very smart breed, sometimes I think he taught me as much as I taught him.

Growing up we had 6 akitas. Each daughter when they got a.house to an akita..thats 4 akitas now. I am waiting for my backyard to.be fixed up to i get my akita. 6ft fence! Hahaha no way.they will.jump that easy. They know how to.climb. and can really jump. When an akita is on a.chase they are so quick and and move so smoothly. Its amazing to watch them in their element. They all.got their own personalities. Very very very protective of family. Very watchful and aware. They are like babysitters. They love to.be loved on and just want to be at your side. Very loyal dogs. Funny too. They do like to hunt. They tend to catch and eat small animals and birds. But they family pets are fine, sorta. Our bunnies and akitas would chase each other around but akitas are big heavy dogs and get little to excited, rolled over on a few of them. Poor things.

This tells me alot about my Akita/Golden mix,now that he is12 years he doesn't shed. It just thickins till I trim and brush him for a week. My back is killing me! The sweetist dog in the world. At one time though he took after his chow/german shepard house mate Whiskey,now that was one bad ass dog. Took out four crazy dogs attacking my neighbors dog then growled at me when I put his collar back on(which i took off to get the stray bitches) then droped a loar in their yard.The whole time the never came out to try and save their dog. Whiskey did,RIP Big Daddy.

@@maya-ws8ji I have a 8 month old female American Akita and 2 cats, one Persian and the other an exotic shorthair. My Akita is very gentle and respectful towards the cats, she even lets Charlie (a Male stray cat that comes around) to eat from her bowl! Now just to be clear, constant training is very important from the beginning. It is true Akita's are stubborn and they put you to the test, but they are very smart and good dogs.

I had a pure bred Japanese brindle for years, and he was my baby boy. When I got him, at 2 yrs, there was an instant connection. He walked over to me looking me straight in the eyes the whole time, stopped just in front of me and sat at attention until I put my hand out. One sniff and that was it. He would sleep right at my feet or off to the side of the bed. If I got sick I would wake up with him staring at me until I told him I was okay. He was very social with those all of our kids and friends. He was a wonderful father to the litters he sired, and spent almost as much time giving the pups attention as the dame did. Wonderful pictures of that. I had a family member stay with us for a couple of years who was in poor health at the time, and he would get up in the middle of the night and go to their room to check on them, and he felt I was okay he would stay in their room for the remainder of the night. He was my shadow, and watchman. His name was Topper. My boy now is almost the same personality, but he just came out of his stupid stage, he's 2 now and a joy. We named him Angelo, and the running joke is we have a Japanese dog with an Italian name, so he likes sushi, and pasta. Thanks for the video. Mike

My Akita passed Oct 2018. I'll share what I wrote about having him in my life. Hey little man. I’m sorry it has taken me so long to write you. My heart has kept my tongue to a whisper, and my words have been too far gone from my fingertips. I’m not sure how to even process it all. I mean, I’m over 6,000 miles away from where you are resting. Yet- I’m no further away from you if I were to be sitting next to you now. No matter the distance, I am just as close to you. Every new day is another day further from the last time I laid my head on yours and told you I loved you. That everything would be ok. That you are safe. That I would find you again. A forever goodbye is unexplainable. I watched you grow from young to old. You watched me grow from boy to man. Time took you too quickly but gave us the gift of each other. This gift through all this cosmic madness, through the billions of years of an endless universe, through time itself, we still somehow collided. We still found each other. The last hour we shared together did not feel real. It seemed as though the wildflowers held you and the sound of the water was the most vivid then I’ve ever heard. I see you, and that moment was like a painting in my mind. Time is a messy well thought out brush stroke. I see that last hour all at once now. Everything seemed as it should. Even though, it was everything I felt it shouldn’t. I knew I would lose my shadow, a shadow that was never dark, but always blissfully there. I miss you deeply. Did you know we walked around 80,000 miles together? It’s an estimate, but that’s like walking around the Earth 3 and a half times. I wish I could go back one day and walk with you just one more mile again, just sit with you in the snow, or even skip rocks and watch you eat the water as it splashed. Sometimes when I’m out and about I see you, but then sometimes I wake up and remember. Those are my favorite dreams. You passed on October 8th 2018 and I did not write to you because it felt like I was letting go. Writing make is so real. I still say your name when I’m laughing or upset. I still look for you when I come home. I still cry when I see a photo of you out of the blue. I’m not sure you will ever know that you saved me. But you did. Through the best and worst times. You kept me going. You loved me all the same. No matter if we were living in a car for 4 months, or a 6-bedroom home. None of that mattered, you never judged me because all that mattered was time together. It was just you and me, and no matter the time- I look back and in hindsight they were the best of times with you. Damn you had so many answers to life, you had it all figured out. You were the best teacher. Thank you is not words enough. There are no words for how I feel about you. There is nothing I can say to give thanks. So, thank you will have to do but it can’t ever capture how I feel. You introduced me to my wife, you seemed to stick around to make sure I had someone in my life who loved me just as deeply as you. You were so gentle when you first met our daughter. If we never went for that walk that day, I would not have Mara or Naya in my life. Thank you for looking out for me. Thank you for making sure. I love you with everything I have. I will find you again. If that means some transcendent form of consciousness, or our atoms just have the opportunity to collide- maybe they did when we were being cooked up in a star. I’ll see you again, somehow, I will. I love you Kuma. I wish I could whisper it in your ear one more time. But this letter will have to do. This letter is why I’m writing to tell you. I can’t sum up a lifetime together nor would I ever want to try. That’s for us to share and keep. That’s special. Those are our memories. I’m just letting the universe know that I love you-that’s all. Visit me more in my dreams, I’ll have food for your there. Kuma-come. Good boy. You’re a good boy.
@_Ag-
@_Ag- Месяц назад
Oh. my. goodness. 😭🥹 Tears pouring down my cheeks. This is the most purely heart-rending, soul expanding, and beautifully written letter I’ve ever read. A tribute of genuine adoration and love indeed. I believe Kuma has heard every word. We know energy doesn’t cease to exist, it just changes form. I do believe we reunite with our guides/loved ones/soulmates of all species when it’s our turn to go. So, never doubt that Kuma is still there for you now and will be then. Thank you so much for sharing. 🤍 You’re amazing at conveying with such eloquence what I never could.

I have been an OG Akita owner for 15 years. All my dogs have been a pure joy. I had a huge yard with an invisible fence which the didnt even need after a year. They stayed in the yard, were good with other dogs, cats and kids. Toward the end I kept kids away and muzzled them if strangers were around just for safety. Female was golden Male was iffy at worst but still golden. They were large 120 130 pound American. They killed everything in the yard from small moles and shrews to huge raccoons. I gave them my people scraps mixed with their food. Skin disorders racked my female in the end and my Males stomach flipped. They were around 11. Heart breaking when they start falling apart. Never hit or negative enforce these dogs ever. They are too smart and will remeber and get you.

bhoj03 - what she meant is that before owning an Akita, you should have owned another breed that is not as powerful as Akitas, they tend to be stubborn and dog-aggresive, so if you don´t raise them properly, you wil end up getting in trouble with your dog. That´s what happens with many bully breeds owners who can´t control their dogs in some situations.

What we now call the American Akita came from dog fighters in Odate and elsewhere in Akita prefecture. They needed a bigger dog to compete with the Kochi Tosa so they bred Akita to English Mastiffs and St.Bernards. This resulted in a bigger dog with more coloration than is found in Japanese breeds. After WW2 , American GI's brought them back to the states to establish the breed here in the states. At the same time the Japanese collected every dog they could that reflected more of the earlier Akita type and bred away from the larger mastiff blooded dogs. As a result, we now have two very different breeds.

"Bear hunting" is a made up breed history. The Akita was a fighting dog which was routinely defeated by the western bulldogs of that time. The lack of success of the Akita against the western breeds then caused the Japanese to create the much more capable Tosa Inu. After the Tosa was created the Akita was absolete as a fighter and thankfully became revered for all the other fantastic qualities this breed displays. The false "bear hunting" history was created to avoid the undeserved and unfounded negative reputations the so called fighting breeds endure these days. It makes no sense since no one seems to think that aggression towards bears translates into aggression towards humans... just like aggression towards dogs does not translate into aggression towards people. The Akita is a fantastic breed regardless of their made up or real history. And yes... Brad... You look a little different in this video... change of diet?
@1baby
@1baby 6 лет назад
Mandy Lion The bear hunting part isn’t made up though, they were actively used for hunting large game such as boar, bear and elk. The breed was essentially derived from the Matagi Inu, a smaller spitz dog breed which was used by the Matagi people for tracking animals and keeping them at bay until the hunter would arrive. In the late part of the 19th century the breed underwent mixing with western breeds such as the St Bernard to produce larger dogs. However, it is fair to say that the Akita hasn’t been used for this purpose for many decades now but the breed still has a very high prey drive. You are entirely correct about the Tosa though, it was the Japanese’s attempt at producing a fighting dog which could match the successful pit bulldogs. I believe that the Tosa was also bred with some Akitas but this was short lived as they found that the Akita has started to display far too much aggression and at the some time had started to lose its breed characteristics, such as its upright ears and plush coat. On a separate note, I’m quite curious to know how the Akita stands against other hunting dogs, such as the Dogo, Bulldog and Presa, which are still used for their original purpose. I wonder if the Akita can match the ‘hard bite’ which the molosser breeds breeds are notorious for as some dogs from the American line still show a lot of mastiff influence.

@@1baby the dogs we see today in America, have never been truly tested in what we consider to be dog fighting in the States. I'm not sure where he's getting the idea that they completed against Western Bulldogs, the type of fighting they were used for in Japan was not the bloody fight to the death matches we have here, it was really more of a sport where the winner was the one who would pin the other dog down by the throat, then the fight was stopped. Western Bulldogs did not participate in this sport fighting in Japan to the best of my knowledge, and American Akitas have never been popularly used in U.S. dog fighting to the death matches. Not sure how they would fair in a fight to the death against say a pit bull, but them being so much larger makes me think it would be alot like when they put Rotties against Pits, and I've seen it go both ways. I'm definitely not for dog fighting tho, but you are also right in saying that they were actually used for hunting as well. My Akitas prey drive is off the charts, so is her fight drive. Seems like alot of the info the OP mentioned was false, I'm not sure he knows the breed too well based off his comment
