Akitio Node Titan vs. Razer Core X 

Razer Core X is discontinued but the Akitio still is being sold.

I owned a Razer Core v1, and just ordered a Node Titan. The Core v1 sucked - it's USB ports were glitchy and would drop out when using the GPU - supposedly due to the TI82 chip which was later replaced in the v2. Sleeping, resuming, hot plugging, device authentication - the entire Thunderbolt experience has been really glitchy for me. The Razer Core X is still using the same original DSL6540 ("Alpine Ridge") Thunderbolt chip, whereas the Node Titan is one of the first enclosures to finally use the JHL7440 ("Titan Ridge") generation chip, announced back in 2018 (technically JHL8440 "Goshen Ridge" is current now). So, if you're seeing things like frame timing differences between enclosures, I'd definitely be looking to the Thunderbolt chip at the heart of this device (vs fan placement). My hope is, based on the fact that this review covered none of the glitchy problematic things I was actually looking for in an eGPU review, that the entire software stack has improved along with the chips, and those are all a thing of the past. I still have doubts.

After 3 years, here is my recap: 1. Razer Core X has died during warrant period. Razer didn't want to switch a simple fuse, so they are giving me back my money. Too shitty, I need it for work. So I hate them from now. 2. I have to find something else instead of Razer Core X, since it isn't selling anymore in Europe. But the Akitio is much cheaper now, then the Razer cost me last year. Hope it will work as I expect it.

So the Core X is better because when you tap on it it doesn't make cheap noises? 🤣

The Akitio Titan uses Intel's Titan Ridge thunderbolt controller, whereas the CoreX uses the older Alpine Ridge controller. Also the audio and video are very out of sync.

does either of them can handle a 3 pcie slot GPU?

What is the GPU you put in?

so the node is just a case?

Can it run on laptops?

What about greasing the barring on the fans to reduce noise?

Funny. I just watched the video today and when I saw you installed the Radeon card, I kept thinking to myself- wait, he didn’t seat the GPU right. He barely just put it in without checking to see if it was secured. A few minutes later, “so, the Radeon card was defective…”

Does the Akitio work without a GPU card?
