An emotional Gerald Santos clarified to a Senate panel on Monday (August 19) that he was raped in the 2005 incident which he had previously referred to in more general terms.
"Ako po ay hindi po na-harass, hindi po na-abuse. Ako po ay na-rape po. Na-rape po ako, your honor," he said during the hearing of the Senate committee on public information and mass media.
The singer said the incident happened when he was only 15 years old, but did not name the musical director who allegedly raped him.
Santos also opted not to detail the rape, saying he fears that the musical director and his friends in the industry would retaliate.
In tears, Santos pleaded to the Senate committee's chairperson, Sen. Robinhood Padilla, and Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada to help him as he confirmed contemplating filing a rape complaint, 19 years after the incident.

The senator is doing his job vetting the resource person. Everyone can claim to be a victim, Filipino culture also carries a factor of crying as an act of manipulation, that's a sad reality. Especially when a complainant is an experienced screen actor, who gets paid for his talent in acting.

He was sexually assaulted, not harassed. I work with children and adolescents who suffer from mental disorders due to sexual abuse. These victims are deeply affected emotionally, often resorting to drugs to numb their pain, and many engage in self-harm or attempt suicide. I feel immense sympathy for Gerald Santos, but I'm also incredibly proud of him for finding a better job and courageously sharing his story with the public. Senator Estrada's lack of empathy and sensitivity toward the victim is disgraceful for a public servant.

This is what happens when celebrities and actors are elected to the Senate-it starts to resemble a talk show. Events like this should be discussed in the proper forum, like a court. Once there's a resolution, the Senate can then focus on how to improve provisions on sexual harassment to protect all employees, not just celebrities. Meanwhile, there's a war between Russia and Ukraine, ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, and hundreds of thousands of people are dying. The cost of food in the Philippines is skyrocketing, making people poorer. Yet, this is what the Philippine Senate is focused on discussing. What the heck! I miss the days when Miriam Defensor Santiago was alive. I feel strongly that we should have more lawyers as senators so that the Senate isn’t used as a classroom for senators to learn the law. It's clear that some senators are being coached by lawyers behind the scenes.

The fact that GMA terminated the rapist means he was proven guilty by the network. So, termination lang ang ginawa nila? Bakit hindi alam ni Gerald ang action na ito from GMA?
