Part 26: • Akon Doesn't Regret Do...
Part 1: • Akon on Africa's Akon ...
--------
In this clip, Akon addresses the controversial comments he made about African women vs. African American woman by explaining the differences between the household structures. The platinum selling artist then revisits his bold statement about African Americans not being able to get over slavery. He doubles down on his opinion by outlining the mindset that he beliefs African Americans have. From there, DJ Vlad chimes in by outlining some of the different viewpoints between African Americans, Africans and Black people from the Caribbean. This prompts DJ Vlad to state his belief that DJ Kool Herc from Jamaica is solely responding for starting hip-hop. As the discussion moves along, Akon shares his belief for the way Black people can unite and move forward.

Many Africans don't think about American slavery but instead think about colonialism, dictatorships, corruption, civil war, or poverty in Africa. It's not even a matter of being dismissive as Akon seems to frame it, but about recent history in the region and how that affects the sociopolitical and economic environment.
@rogerssombe7369

That's true. Each Black person across the Atlantic has had their own experience. That would mean the highlight of the topic would be what has pressed us. Africans is colonialism and the Americas is slavery. When u really look at it..both of them are control at the root. I think its an important discussion to be had...not to dwell on it and also not to ignore it but...find solutions..and tht solution will be found in understanding with both sides and then unity..

West Indian immigrants have been living with "native" black Americans in NYC for a long time. There were West Indians back in the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s. So if something started among black people in NYC in the 1970s, it's no surprise that there would be a bunch of West Indians in the mix. Half these 80s and 90s NY rappers have West Indian backgrounds too, from Slick Rick to Doug E. Fresh, Cool J, BIG, some of the Boot Camp, Foxy Brown, KRS, Grandmaster Flash, Busta Rhymes, etc.

Although we ve monuments and museums that commemorates "slavery," it's not something we think about on our daily lives, its not taught in our schools, we don't ve debates about it, we don't celebrate Juneteenth. I'm not tryin to be dismissive of what "slavery" entails or the agony it brought, rather I'm pointing out that Africans ve a lot to deal with; poor economy, poor socio-cultural facilities, bad government, tribalism, religious fanatism, terrorism, and so on. Over 120 million Nigerians live on 10 dollar a month. An average Nigerian man don't have the time nor the frame of mind to think about slavery that happened centuries ago, when he has alot to deal with. Again Akon is right!!!

Most political figures in Nigeria today had ancestors who were slave owners. This is a dark truth that most Africans won't admit. However, after Slavery came another in the form of "colonialism," which further striped Africans of their language, identity, economic and it still goes on till date. Diamonds, gold, oil, cocoa, are richly found in Africa but the host countries can't boost of a 5 dollar minimum wage. I'm sure you got a job, got a car, health Insurance, can raise a family or already has one. For most Africans, this is not the case. But where it’s hard for many to relate is the feeling of being detached from a positive and cohesive culture that is older than America itself and so it’s ingrained in people without even thinking about it. South Africans can relate the most because Apartheid literally came from American black codes and native American reservation policies. They went through the closest similar experience, and their music feels the closest to HipHop because of it. Tupac is everything over there

Any other enslaved ppls can return to their homeland...or never left. Black Americans have no country or tribe we belong to. Many times in Reconstruction and Jim Crow Black Americans did "create their own." And what happened, it was burned to the grown and they were murdered in masses/lynched. State sanctioned terrorism. My own parents didn't even integrate until they were in high school. That's literally one generation. Then there was Red Lining, cities building highways through developed black neighborhoods, refusing GI Home Loans to black GIs, crack epidemic, unfair sentencing of black Americans compared to whites (destroying black families for generations. Can't even vote with a felony), "slavery" is still legal in the prison system, and the government still intentionally disenfranchises black communities. Alllll these things are remnants of American slavery. What problem can be fixed without addressing the root cause? So ya, it needs to be talked about. My point is it's self righteous for black immigrants to act as if those things haven't/don't affect the economic power/ability of Black Americans. Especially if they are coming from countries where their own ppl run the government and they STILL have to immigrate to the US. The fact that black Americans are still here is a miracle in itself. That’s definitely not true. People kill me with the excuse talk. What excuses? Is the Congo making excuses for Belgium? Are the people in the Nigerian slums with no running water making excuses? @@themarathoncontinues4211 … You might be right about the last comment, but I doubt it. I think we can do some math to see. I have to give ancient Africa it’s respect. That’s where math, science, medicine, etc was invented. And African is definitely the motherland. In the last 400 years, who would you say has contributed more to the Black diaspora than Black Americans? Black Americans invented all kind of stuff that’s used all over the world. Black Americans have also made a way for other Blacks in the diaspora to go to college, work, send money home, etc. There’s donations to other countries and boycotts of companies that oppress Blacks. There’s living amongst Africans, employing Africans, building schools, buying text books, buying clothes, buying food, etc. Besides Black Americans, I think Jamaicans and maybe Trinidadians come next. Let’s see your list of peoples who stand up for Black People as a whole.

@@dnyce8224 that’s my point,, we can’t just go off last 400 years because that’s where your history start. The thousands of years you give respect to prior count, because that’s where OUR history starts. As far as standing up for other black people that’s happened time and time again, it’s just that you have to be in the mix of African news to know that.
@dnyce8224
@dnyce8224 Год назад

The generalism of “Africa” is wrong. In my country women work just as hard as men outside the home. Statistics have actually shown, women work more in the farms than men. So imagine women work a lot at home and outside the home as well. I actually agree that Africans don’t think about slavery as much as Americans, historically Africans in Africa are not descendants of slaves. However, we care about colonialism, neocolonialism, poverty and inequalities in the world. Corruption too 😢
