At the IWA trade show earlier this year, a representative from the Polish KGM Consortium gave me a sample of a new AK optics rail to try out. This idea here was to create a universal optics mount for basically any AK/AKM/AK74 rifle that would be light, not require permanent modification, and not interfere with other military accessories like under barrel grenade launchers. The target market was Ukraine; to provide a way to quickly and easily improve the combat effectiveness of legacy Kalashnikovs by giving them modern optics.
The rail mounts to the gas tube of the rifle after removing the upper handguard. Three steel claps are used (the rest of the mount is 7075 aluminum, but the steel clamps give steel threads for the 12 screws used). For an additional point of control, the mount is designed to fit tight over the rear sight block of the rifle, thus stabilizing the often-slightly-wobbly gas tube. Since this does not use the barrel at all, the lower handguard is not involved and UBGLs like the GP-25 and GP-30 can still be used. The mount is high enough to allow easy field stripping of the rifle, and either rod dot or magnified optics can be used.
I was initially skeptical, but when mounted to my rifle (an older Century AK74 build with Was tGerman furniture) it actually seemed quite solid. Disassembly and reassembly did not cause a loss of zero. However, after I tried dropping the rifle from head height a couple times, I got a 6 MOA vertical shift in POI. KGM advised me that removing and replacing the rail/gas tube assembly would fix this, but it did not.
Despite my initial skepticism, I really wanted to like this once I started using it. And as long as it doesn't suffer a significant blow, I think it is a pretty good solution for easily mounting optics on an AK. The use of the rear sight block as a support is clever, and isolating the rail from the dust cover prevents any zero-hold issues resulting from basic field stripping. Unfortunately, the drop that caused my zero shift is not really a "torture" sort of thing to my mind; it's a totally reasonable accidental slip that could happen to anyone, and having this cause a major zero shift is a significant compromise.

The problem with one off field “tests” like dropping the rifle is that the optic itself could have been damaged (or its mount shifted) . Still interesting.

After the hit to the holosun, I'd put it on a surface plate or something and see it that rear section of rail didn't bend. But if is was constant after the hit maybe the initial install wasn't fully seated.

I could see both scenarios. There's a lot of thin webs holding that aft end together, I could see the aluminum yielding there just slightly from a 2m hit on the cantilever from the mass of that rifle. They are substatial enough that it shouldn't be a lot but it can happen .

You really should have used the iron sights on the mount to prove that the mount itself (and not the red dot) lost zero.

@justinsmart581 3 месяца назад
That was my first thought as well. For all we know, the optic itself lost zero. I know it isn't a cheap optic, but it still could have been what actually bumped. Considering resetting the mount led to the same result, I'm super curious if it was the optic that lost zero and not the mount.

With your grouping being so consistent even after the drop, and resetting the mount, I'd be more inclined that your optic shifted zero. I think it warrants a bit more testing with a different optic just to be sure. Also testing the optics themselves on a absolute positive mounting like an AR-15 as a control. I get that Ian may not have the time to do all this extra testing but it would be neat if someone else could run it.

Ah, my combat set up. Good to see it here. Got plastic furniture on mine though. That rail is $10 cheaper than an FAB defense dust cover, which if you take a look at the front of it is also about half an inch higher than a standard dust cover. So the difference in height is actually negligible. I wouldn't say this rail is too high. It is pretty comfortable in terms of height. Not the lowest there, but most dudes put a riser on their weapon anyways. Where it excels is if you use it together with NODs and something like an EOTech to look through or other night vision ready red dots, then it is just perfect height even without risers. I used that setup because IR laser will be spotted by the ruzzians. You don't knock your NODs on the weapon and have the dot right in front of your face. So it is actually at a sweet spot. Not too low, but not too high. I was choosing between that and the FAB defense dust cover. FAB is the only one that actually holds zero on long range. TWS and Zenit are up to 5 MOA off zero after field strip. And in combat you need to clean your gun a lot. Basically after every major battle. Side mounts are last millennium, I don't even consider them. Too much leverage on that small side rail. Receiver warps from heat when intense fire sessions ever so slightly, so your point of aim on long range wanders away considerably even without force impact. Long range I consider 300m, which are quickly surpassed in open fields and urban combat in average cities. The distance between two blocks is oftentimes 500 to 600 m. About 500m is the longest distance I ever hit a boogie with this setup. I rock an EoTech and 5x G45 magnifier on my 5.45. Second shot was a hit, aimed center mass between the shoulders, hit somewhere good. Boog was down immediately. Bought it myself, though I am partially sponsored by my community at home.

Id like to see the drop test repeated with a different optic to confirm the rail issue. That completely eliminates the optic being of issue. I know there are limited options for these weapons but having to re-zero after a 2m drop isnt ideal. thats going to happen fairly frequently in real life situations
@MikeDCWeld
@MikeDCWeld 3 месяца назад
Or remove the optic entirely and do the testing with the built-in iron sights.
@geodkyt
@geodkyt 3 месяца назад
@@MikeDCWeldI question whether the rough sights built into the mount offer enough discrimination for a good accuracy test. Maybe not even enough to verify the election shift definitively. But re-running the test with something like an Aimpoint M4 or one of the lighter ACOGs - optics that have proven freakishly robust and resistant to zero shifts in significant combat use. The problem is that the extra mass might influence the problem by putting more stress on the rail lockup... but I suspect a lot of Ukrainians with access to optics are disproportionately supplied with older, heavier units rather than the newer, lighter 20mm RDS anyway.
@kineticdeath
@kineticdeath 3 месяца назад
use another of the same type of optic, same brand and everything. If the first worked perfectly prior to the test, fails after the test but the second works perfectly that would strongly imply the optic was the point of failure right?
@PolishRadom1944
@PolishRadom1944 3 месяца назад
@@kineticdeath you could theoretically have the same shift issue with the same optic. By keeping the gun/rail the same you eliminate the optics being a problem with a different type/brand. if we use say an acog ta11 that is much heavier and the shift is worse in the rail we can presume the optic is having a greater impact on the securing mechanism of the rail on the drop test. Or simply put that holosun onto another firearm drop it and see if it also shifts...but that also opens up some other variables.

I think that big drop at 5:50 that made the rifle bounce actually bent the rail ever so slightly, making the sight point slightly upwards which makes it hit low. In fact it was probably the rail that made it bounce like that.

I would bet that since the mount seems to be holding its "new" zero after the shock to the optic, it might stay there. One more session of dropping would have been interesting. My last thought is to drop test the optic on a reliable mount on a different rifle as a control. Whole loss of zero could be the optic.

Everyone is missing the point that this is meant to fit on any AK and be used in combat. The change in impact was 2 inches low at 50 yards. So a head shot aimed at eyes will hit the mouth. Interesting, do you recall how frequent a drop/bump would change the point of aim? (Also reading many comments about its the sights/holosun loosing zero.) Also when the AK was fired a lot did the heat shift the point of aim?
@kukusyayakh9674
@kukusyayakh9674 3 месяца назад
@johnanon6938 Never notice any of it and they were abused most of the time. It's chaos whenever contact occurs. You exit the vehicle in A rush bumping everything against everything including the rifle, you hit the ground, switch arms, slam the bolt, overall pretty harsh treatment pretty much all the time. An I had a heavy thermal on it. I personally landed hits on 400m with an accuracy on a free standing target of 3-4 out of 5 rounds fired whenever not in a rush. Weight is practically not existent. Heat as well. The whole thing is basically a gigantic radiator cooling the rifle without getting hot itself due to its large free hanging surfaces. One notable feature is that the rail adjusts for warped barrels: All AKs tend to warp their barrels to 7 o'clock when used as a squad support weapon. Prolonged cover fire heats up the barrel, seems to soften the material and the heavy bolt beats its down to 7 o'clock shot per shot. And it never returns after cooling. Now naturally it bends together with the gas block so the rail basically wanders alongside it. So if you habe a warped barrel the rail will always point into the same direction meaning you do not lose accuracy under any condition. Don't know any other rail doing this. Never tried the milled in backup sights though. So to sum it up: To me that's a great product and does exactly what it's meant to do.

first iteration... sounds like they'll figure something out to fix that problem. Though the immediate question is... what does that six-foot repeated drop on the optic due to OTHER rifles with either after-market or OEM rails? And I suspect while DROP is important, the concussion from nearby detonations (arty crew standing close to their field gun/stored inside a tank/in a trench where a mortar round landed *way* too close for comfort) is going to be the condition that the drop test is supposed to be simulating.

That was a hell of a drop test LOL. Like how often do you want your rifle to fall onto a hard surface from over head heights inbetween shots 😀Ok, so bottom line: After 6 free falls from 7 feet, I aim between the target's eyes and hit his chin or neck on 100m. Thats actually really good and I still blame the optic for that. Back in the good old days I ran an iraqi Tabuk with an original russian side mount and some fixed 3x russian scope on it. Worked well but after I hit the deck with it during the luckily only encounter I had in my life, the mount just snapped off clean and I had to manage that encounter with my irons. Since than side mounts are no good in my humble opinion. Too much leverage on that small side rail. So its nice to see somebody bringing out something good for that nasty old work horse. And if its light, easily installs, easily removes and even holds zero inbetween and after, I'd call it a 360° win. Would have loved something like this on my AK during the my wild days and am now definitely going to get one for my WASR. Just my 5 cents...

We have the same experience with side mounts. Not sure why they are so popular when even the Russians scrapped them for picatinny. Likely only popular because it's an original weird Russian Cold War design and people like weird stuff on their AKs.

Was actually not too bad of a drop test. For an AK especially with a rail system that was kind of harsh, sure. I doubt that any other AK accessory would have performed so well retaining the same precision. Those rear sight picatinny inlays would have snapped off, side mounts too. The railed dust covers would have lost zero and fit 100 % I don't care what dust cover it is. FAB VFR AK and Ultimak railed gas tube I guess would have performed about the same. But my point is: for a proper SOPMOD setup like the MK18 with a nice EoTech, this drop test isn't even a test. That one you can drop from a three story building and it will likely still hold zero.

isn't that rail is going to get hot very quickly if it's clamped to the gas tube?
@ok9nja741

I wonder how well it holds zero after the gas tube heats up. Other than that, it's still a great thing to give the Ukrainians for their more outdated AKs, pretty much any optic is better than no optic especially when you don't lose the iron sights by installing it.
@AggieLS1
@AggieLS1 3 месяца назад
They could probably fix that with a tensioning screw at the back, that contacts the dust cover. Though you would probably risk denting the dust cover if dropped on a hard enough surface.

TBF, a significant impact to most optics is bound to alter the sight's zero, especially something like a red dot. That being said, it is a cleverly made alternative to traditional AK optical mounting systems...though a tad pricey.

The manufacturer actually has a very comprehensive 5 min demonstration video on the whole system for modernizing AKs, RPKs and Mosin platforms. So this rail really is just a piece of a larger system whose components can be set up individually or in combination. Sick! Purchasing rail + M-LOK handguard. Suggestion.....maybe we need a more solid front mount....notice that at the rear you show wear marks where the solid "legs" of the mount straddled the rear sight base.....hmmm.....maybe instead of depending on the level of gas tube fitting tightness up front....maybe HERE you ALSO need some solid straddling type legs....but have them be located a bit further forward to contact the gas-block into which the gas tube engages ????? The unit would still be taken down as before, and disassembly woud not be affected. Send royalty checks to my address [ haha.... :) ... ]

You mentioned the rail is made from 7075 aluminum alloy. I understand certain types of 7075 alloy are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking. Do you know if the specific alloy used is so susceptible? At my office, we have been switching, where possible, to 7050 alloy to help minimize this risk.

RS Regulate or Midwest Industries side mounts are plenty good enough. Hell, you could even go mastermount. Both companies also make accessory rails that clamp to the barrel. These clamps on chassis are just way too delicate and gimmicky in my opinion.

theres tens of millions of reliable AK's around the world. why would they bin them and go buy US guns if theres any chance they can build some little bit of metal that can stick to the side/top/bottom of their millions of AK's and bump them into the 21st century? Its not like the AR-15 is some super modern 21st century design, anyway.

While it's possible the drop effected the optic, it's worth considering that point of the rail is unsupported underneath. With it being aluminum, impact on that unsupported section could have caused some minor bowing in the mount. That would also cause the optic to sight high, resulting in a zeroed in rounds appearing to hit low. Fractions of a millimeter on the rail can result in inches downrange. To test it, just take a straight edge down the length of the upper section, if it doesn't maintain contact along it's length then that's likely the problem.

There is no logic to KGM's claim that re-seating the rail would reset the zero. That is just a load of BS. If a tire on your car goes out of balance, taking the tire off the car and replacing it will not re-balance the tire.

@DawidKov
@DawidKov 3 месяца назад
As a backwards compatible solution, it's still pretty good. But it's still using the gas tube, which itself was never meant to be firmly seated, as one of its points of contact. The piston is still bouncing around inside that tube each shot. The heat is still going to be expanding the tube a little bit. The lock on the rear sight block is still subject to shifts, since it's holding purely on tension. I'd say the nicest part about it is the ability to still be able to remove the BCG without bothering with the rail. That ease of disassembly on of AK's biggest strengths, and something many accessory manufacturers forget. But for most cleaning, you'd still be taking the rail off, because you need to clean the gas tube and the upper end of the gas block, they get the most soot buildup in them.

Did you try loosening then retightening the red dot after? Those can be knocked out of alignment too, tolerances between different rail manufacturers and red dot clamps can vary enough for that to happen, it shouldn't but it does.
