A secret spot where families go to picnic and young lovers steal a few moments to themselves. But be careful - it overlooks traditional Islamic Cairo.
In 2005 a mountain of Cairo’s garbage was miraculously transformed into the unexpected emerald paradise of Al-Azhar Park. Stroll through gardens, fountains, a small lake, and terraces - with superb views of Cairo.
It’s one of the few places that families can get away over the weekend and enjoy a bit of greenery. For some children, it’s their first experience with real live grass.
It’s also a great place to people watch.
• Families enjoying the day together.
• Fathers with their kids.
• Single men - and women - hanging out in packs.
• Everyone - from women in full burkhas - to the younger, more liberal crowd.
Though maybe they should be a bit more discreet - Al Azhar park overlooks the mosques of traditional, Islamic Cairo.
