Went to your concert last night in Dallas. Amazing performance! I've been a fan ever since my older brother played a few songs from Scenario to me back in '83. As far as influences go, you've been the biggest in my playing. So glad I got to finally see you live. Thanks!
When Al Di Meola plays rock standards it's very refreshing. The riff is played with perfect rythm, cause as I know Al Di Meola pays great attention to the rythm aspect of music. BTW he plays on Gibson LP as in original played Jimi Page. Thanks to the genius and virtuosity of Al Di Meola, I also liked guitar jazz improvisations. I understand what he is improvising for, but I can't completely understand melodic aspect of what Allan Holdsworth (RIP) played, ofc being great virtuoso too. For me music without rythm and melodic background is not music, regardless of the genre of music that we analyze, but it's only my humble opinion.
So Page's Black dog became standrad classic after Al Di Meola performed this :) BTW: I see that Al Di Meola also likes sometimes play rock and on electric guitar not only jazz and classical, Spanish-style improvisations.
Al , I still get the same grin that you had on your face on my face, when we start to play zeppelin songs. You and I went to Berklee together. My friend ( a chick ) met you at a small club in Israel many many years back. You wouldn’t know me under this name. You understand...😏 P.S. Remember “ Slice” and Cosmo’s???

Too Funny Al, I made that "one note" statement today talking to a guy, then came home and read your opinion on guitar world. Yesterday I read it was attributed to Les Paul. Personally I always attributed it to Lindsey Buckingham's style, and others. Well, i respect you so much, lol, I'll change my opinion!! I think it it takes a little of both really, tension, relief, etc. LIke a good funny horor movie, lol, my solos. Yesterday I taught myself the lucy in the Sky with Diamonds intro, backwards, because I'm getting a looper with reverse and want to see how it sounds, heheh!! Cheers! Shawn Cleveland, Ohio DSL! DSL!!! heheh
+Chungas Revenge Page was awesome live. Just depended on the year and the night. 1968-1973, on a good night, I'd pay a lot of money to see Page live. I don't think there was anybody better back then. 1977 and onward, well that's another story. Heroine is a bad drug.
Most Jazz Players can play all the licks on the world, but the heavyness rock music requires is just not there, and also rock players cant play jazz from one day to another
What matters? How easy something is to play, or how it SOUNDS? The difficulty level does not reflect the quality of the song, something can be simple and sound great. Sometimes people get so focused on making something extra complicated that they forget to listen to it and hear if it sounds good, this is when music stops being about music but becomes a pretentious competition.
