Most of us can label all the states, let alone draw them freehand. I wonder if there's a map out of camera view LOL. I must admit that I giggled when he said "hunky"--- such a midwestern word 😂. He drew Minnesota’s part of Lake of the Woods, and then the Northwest Angle...which if you want to get there by car you have to drive through Manitoba.
I was thinking he took so much time with the 48 states then rushed Alaska and if I was from Hawaii I would be offended the main island was a box. Lol Very impressive of the Senator with that said 👏
Not so much. VT and NH were just drawn as two triangles, but there is a lot of border squiggles...he made none. Still very impressive to be able to do it all, but it's obvious he knows the state he's from and the states near it very well and just general outlines of everything else. Just like most of us.
Why am I watching this, I’m Australian. We have 6 states and two mainland territories. Anyways, he’s pretty impressive. Just draw a cats face and you get Australia.
Many years ago, I was standing behind Al Franken in a Minneapolis airport, waiting to get my rental car. He was by himself and right ahead of me. When it was his turn, he found out they did not have his reservation in the computer, so he did not get a car. Apparently they did not have any other cars available either. It crossed my mind to offer him a ride in my rental car, but I didn't say anything. True story. Not that interesting, but true none the less.

I support women’s rights, but the overreaction to Al Franken really screwed him. He is one of the smartest people in the US Senate in the country has lost a true leader by forcing him out. Shame.
You are so right! Supporting women's rights should not mean ignoring years of exponentially increasing evidence of blatant Republican dirty tricks. And it was infuriating & shameful to see the extremely bad judgment of certain key Democratic women -- who should have known better -- embrace hysteria & go full Trump on denying the investigation Senator Franken asked for. Which would have dragged said Republican dirty tricks into the light. Why fall for the tricks? Why embrace the women-are-prone-to-hysteria stereotype (& run for President like that shouldn't be a disqualifying character trait? Blinded by overambition? Little bit of Trumplike narcissism? Ugh! Yep, one in particular!)? These people allowed themselves to be manipulated, fell hook, line & sinker for the oldest truck in the book: divide and conquer. While plenty of us (women) screamed NO!! from the sidelines. Like some horror movie, walk right into the trap. Using the Me Too movement as fodder for Republican Dirty Tricks worked too well. Put nothing past them! We have to factor Republican Dirty Tricks into every thing, the evidence is overwhelming & escalating daily, is it not? They tried this tactic with Bob Mueller too -- unsuccessfully, for once. But it is obviously their new favorite Dirty Trick because you can see especially younger male progressives (like my nephew, who says he plans to get into politics) swallowing this whole & blithely repeating yet another Republican dirty trick (RDT for short) accusation. As if these young guys would be immune to false accusations & trial by mob if trumped-up accusations suited the Dirty Tricksters. I absolutely encourage young people to get involved in politics, just keep your head & be aware. Also, you know Republicans are jamming the courts with judges & women & men who should be believed are not going to be believed & human rights are under assault. I believe Al Franken is a good man, he was robbed of due process or the Congressional equivalent by the very people who should know better, this country is the worse for it, and the way he was treated is infuriating & shameful. Al Franken is a lovable, smart, kind man & nasty Republicans can't stand it. Love you Al!

OUR people should have known better, and Kirsten Gillibrand lost my support from then on (I'm a New Yorker.). She'll get a lukewarm vote from me ONLY if she's running against a trumpist, but if a good Democrat runs against her, she's done. It was clearly a set up to 'get Al Franken out of the Senate' because of his smarts--could you imagine HIM being part of the impeachment process? Groan--what we lost is unbelievable, and we're now suffering the ramifications. So many of us want him back!
Gives me the chills to look at an awesome map like this. We are both blessed and cursed to live in such a diverse but also massive country. With so many different mini-countries, having a culture all their own, that one could scarcely visit every one let alone get to know what makes each unique. So many different stories, some so completely different they would seem like a different planet from where you grew up. And yet we are all on the same team, under the same one flag. It's beautiful and a little bit heartbreaking.

My 9th grade geography teacher had us do this with a map of the world. You had to draw it and name as many countries as possible. I’m forever grateful to him for making us do that test!

It’s an entirely useless ability unless you’re in land surveying and even then...there are tools and tech. The best thing to teach schoolchildren imo, is how to learn throughout life, and how to solve problems.
John M Not sure if you’ve seen videos of “some” Americans not even being able to name a single *country* on a world map. (Although I admit, that it was probably staged) But these sorts of things are basic, general and typical stuff everyone should know. You should know what countries lie where, and should be able to locate them. Not because you’ll necessarily need that knowledge, but rather because it’s general and basic. Things such as, why the earth is round and which states are where, and etc surprisingly are essential for your own future. I personally wasn’t taught where all countries were, and only knew provinces and cities of my own country. But I did go through the hassle of trying to learn where every country is... And hey, even I don’t know the location of every single country that’s out there. But, at least I have a general understanding of geography thanks to that. The reason as to why you should know the states of your own country, is the same as why you should know your country’s national anthem. In my language we refer to these sorts of information as “general knowledge” meaning : a collection of information, that is shared amongst a large portion of citizens, of a said place. While technology, outperforms and helps us day by day making learning some stuff absolutely unnecessary, it is not an excuse as to pass, on learning basic general information.
I don't remember which national election it was, but Al Franken was doing election coverage with Arianna Huffington. Al had a white board, a red marker, and a blue marker. He was drawing the states as the results came in, red for republican, blue for democrat. The results moved around a bit, so he had to leave gaps for missing states. In the end, it was quite amazing. I remember a few places where a state had to get squeezed in, but what a skill. Most entertaining election coverage I've ever seen.

Al's been doing this forever. I recall about 30 years ago seeing "Franken & Davis" where he did this live, making topical jokes the whole time. He's a massively intelligent Harvard grad, which helps make his humor so poignant, not just poking dumb jabs at people or situations. Some of our best comedians/humorists have top-tier educations, and not just a "gentleman's degree" as some other prominent figures in contemporary politics, for bragging rights.
Florence Shen I’m not an American and I was incensed at how he was treated and disappointed that he decided to resign. The GOP picked a smart one to target and then he was betrayed by his own party. I assume he wasn’t owned by any corporate donors.

@Robert Hunt I mostly agree with you. Politics is just plain ugly. There really isn't much point in playing the "blame game". The loss of Al Franken in the Senate was big. He was contributing to bringing forth truth. He was a casualty of politics. Nasty stuff. However, I choose not to feed the anger, partisanship, revenge. I don't mean to sound high-and-mighty or anything like that. Just don't see any point in choosing sides and shouting. Seems that must pass now. * Al Franken continues his work. In spite of the ugliness.
