The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I was a professional trumpet player for over 25 years. All things considered, Al Hirt was hands down the best.

This is amazing! This performance is from 1961. His album, "Horn a Plenty," arranged and conducted by Billy May with his orchestra, was released in 1962 and 'Holiday" is the first cut on side 1. It's virtually the same arrangment. It's a great album, one of Big Al's finest. Meredith Wilson's "Till There Was You," from his Broadway smash, "The Music Man," is also on the album. Thanks so much for posting this unforgettable music from my childhood!

Just fantastic playing by this powerhouse. As loose as he can be with the Dixieland numbers, he can also be very controlled and precise in his playing of ballads and charts like Holiday for Trumpets. Thank you for posting this!

Wow. Where did you find this video? This is rare to find such good audio and video. This guy was my inspiration as a kid, before Doc. Never heard a more powerful player, in person, than AL Hirt. Than you so much for posting this bit of history.

An amazing jazz trumpet player. So overlooked by a lot of jazz fans. Louis Armstrong is my first favorite and Al Hirt is my second favorite. No one can come close to playing like Al.

Wow. I remember listening to Al Hurt's albums with our parents when we were children. I believe my favorite song was Sugar Lips.

If I could bring one person back to life, other than mom and dad, it would be Jumbo Al Hirt. A lifetime fan I heard him play 3 times and met him once in Dallas very late in his career.

None of that "well, let me go ahead and pre-record this and pretend I'm playing the piece." Nope, he played that piece live. Not too sure about the rest of the brass, especially with that goofy "face the other brass players" on that spiral staircase, but let's be aware that Al played that piece from memory.

It’s ‘ music minus one’ that he’s playing with. I love the stooges to his right faking it. Also, I ❤️ Al Hirt!
