Here is a record the Greatest Entertainer Al Jolson (1886-1950) probably never wanted released. It was a private record he made for his then wife Ruby Keeler on August 2, 1929. He was married to the famous dancer from 1928 to 1940.
Reportedly Keeler was in the hospital either due to exhaustion and needing a rest or because of Jolson in some way or another. Jolson made this recording at the end of a session where he recorded multiple songs from his film "Say It With Music" (1929).
Al Jolson was the Greatest Entertainer but not necessarily the Greatest Husband.

He might not have been a wonderful person. But it had nothing to do with his talent. And that’s what the people wanted. Different times for sure.

Wow. . .after listening to this recording, I think I can understand why Ruby eventually divorced Al. Even if he was only joking, some of this stuff sounded pretty unsettling to me, and if I was married, I wouldn't want my husband to say some of the stuff to me, that Al said in this recording. Al may have been a great performer and very charming at times, but he also clearly had some control issues, which he hinted at in this clip, and the fact that he had four marriages total in his lifetime, indicates that he was NOT an easy guy to live with. I think that Ruby tried to make her marriage to Al work as long as she could -- 12 years is a LONG time to stay married to a guy like that, and their relationship got pretty stormy at times -- but she got to a point where she just couldn't take it anymore. I'm glad she was able to find happiness with a guy who WAS good to her!

I don't know how she endured that marriage to Jolson. Ugh! Her second marriage and an affair between her marriages probably saved her life. She was at last with men who did respect her and that undoubtedly helped. I know Jolson maintained that Ruby was the love of his life, but she didn't feel the same way.

@@Muirmaiden Ruby never had any affairs outside of her marriages. She had some pretty high moral standards, and she would have never cheated on Al, even as miserable as she was with him at times!

@@JoMarieM She was involved with Dick Powell after she separated from Jolson. This was confirmed by Powell's third wife, June Allyson. The press got wind of the fact that after leaving Jolson, she moved into a house close Powell's bachelor pad. Powell was married to Joan Blondell at the time, but the marriage was in trouble by then. I don't think Ruby was the kind to have flings under normal circumstances, but Jolson put her through hell and when she left him she probably wanted to have some fun, and what better candidate than Powell, whom she'd known for several years and who treated her with kindness and respect. She was divorcing Jolson anyway and she hadn't yet begun dating John Lowe (whom she married in October of 1941).

@@Muirmaiden I still have a hard time believing this. I've read a ton of stuff about Ruby, and I have NEVER heard about this, and after all, this information came from Dick Powell's wife, who would have had a good reason to make up a nasty rumor about Ruby. Even as lonely and frustrated as Ruby was while she was married to Jolson, this still doesn't seem like something she would have done. There were a LOT of rumors floating around at that time about Dick and Ruby being involved with each other romantically, but I think they were just two people who had an excellent working relationship with each other and nothing more. This still seems like just a crazy rumor to me!

Yep: enslaving the woman with threats of beatings is "sweet" -- in sick reality. One wonders how much of Jolson was left after calculating the size of his enormous EGO.

Yep: "romantics" who mix insincere loving with words with blatant threats of violence. He was married 4 times, and doubtless said the same "I love only you and will always love only you" lie all 4 times. And you can bet he was sleeping with women all over the place while threatening his wives to never "cheat".

There were no answering machines. But, they did have something called. RECORDO-VOICE, you could find them at Coney Island, drug stores, and even on street corners. They were usually, a quarter, and would issue a small metal disc, with voice recording, and some were equipped with mailers. My mom and dad, used to talk like that too, but it was all just joking around, he would never beat her, nor her him. I think he was just joking with her, like my mom and dad used to.
