On most existing recordings of television broadcasts, Al Melgard's organ playing during hockey games doesn't seem to come through very strongly. Here might be one of the better extant examples, along with some audience participation by the Stadium crowd, taking place during a delay in game 6 of the 1962 Stanley Cup finals following a Bobby Hull goal.

Now I know where the tradition started with crowds singing Hail, Hail the gang's all here. A favorite of mine with Nancy Faust playing that at White Sox games and crowd singing.

Bobby Hull was definitely THE favorite in the ‘60’s at Chicago Stadium. Whenever he scored, the Blackhawk fans erupted!

Its amazing to see this old footage where things look pretty foreign (uniforms, logo, equipment & the crowd) to someone who grew up going to games there in the 80s and 90s. But what is remarkable that you close your eyes and listen to that organ, and it is exactly the same! Sure do miss that place.

You can almost smell the smoke when the guy lights up a cigarette in the organ loft at 1:51.

@@skifusya2814. If I remember correctly people were still smoking in the seats in 81 when I first started going, then they stopped that and it was the bathrooms to sneak a smoke, and finally they put a stop to it all together. Same with sitting in the aisles in 2nd balcony. What great memories.

@@Flhxs2015 On another note, the whole "No Smoking" thing, started up in the 70s. It slowly/gradually became universal, in the 90s. This was for the better. No, not everyone liked smoking, and getting high in the old days. It's amazing what I learn from history. Some of it is train wreck shit (like this), and some of it is enjoyable.

This is indeed a great video highlighting Al Melgard. Unfortunately, it took several minutes to clear the debris thrown on the ice by the Chicago fans after Hull's goal, and that absolutely took all of the air and momentum out of the Blackhawks. It took less than five and-a-half minutes for Toronto to score twice and take the Stanley Cup.

That is accurate, and was confirmed/corroborated by some of the Toronto players in post-game remarks to the sportswriters at the time.

Thanks for sharing, I had the privilege to hear the Chicago Stadium organ at Least 100 times. To me it’s a crime that the Barton Organ was destroyed by fires. At least the organ keyboard survived and currently sits in Las Vegas

Would really like to get more national anthems with Al Melgard, but I absolutely loved this clip!

I still have my two "Al Melgard at the Chicago Stadium Organ" vinyl albums.... as a young boy with my dad, i can still remember walking out after a game and just really hearing that booming organ playing as we left....He had some special song he played at the end but i can't remember the title.

Stevie, that song was “My Vision” which Melgard wrote himself. It was a quiet melody which seemed to have a calming influence after a frenetic hockey game. You can hear it by simply entering “Al Melgard My Vision” on RU-vid. Some people sarcastically called the song, “The Blackhawks Lost Again”. 🤣

The 4 straight cups that never were. Hawks never put it all together from 60 to 65. Didn’t win the Prince of Wales finishing a point out two seasons in a row and got Pilous shown the door. Lost to the Wings in two knock down drag out Semifinals, one where Hull got his nose caved in by a cross check. Broke my heart just as much as this game did here. I loved the old Madhouse. That place would heave and lift from the foundation when Bobby scored.

Hawks should have repeated as Cup champs in 1962.

1963 and 1964 were missed opportunities as well. Talented but sadly inconsistent.

@@skifusya2814mostly the defense. Hall was a brilliant goalie but beyond Pilote and Vasko the defensemen weren't as good as say Toronto's

Plus, when you consider the defensive type of game that Punch Imlach insisted on playing in Toronto, it's easy to see why the Leafs won 3 straight Cups from 1962 to 1964.

Let's see, who could be in net for the Black Hawks? Hmmm, maybe he played every game for them this year. Also, this was the deciding game of the finals.
@OldRustySteele

Hi Daniel, I suspect you are saying that tongue-in-cheek, and I'm sure you know that is the Hall of Fame goalie, Glenn Henry Hall -- "Mister Goalie", who held the mark with 502 consecutive appearances for the team in goal. BTW, I noticed you spelled Black Hawks as 2 words, which is exactly correct for that time period -- nice work!
