Absolutely. I saw him in 1978 with Shot in the Dark, and his whole set blew the roof off the place...AND with class and intelligence. What a magical evening.
This uptempo number runs to 5:30, and is - by far - the most commercial song from the “24 Carrots” LP (1980). To Al Stewart, it sounds like a Blue Öyster Cult track melodically. Though an obvious single, “Paint By Numbers” doesn’t appear to have been released as such. This is an Al Stewart solo composition that was published by Frabjous Music/Approximate Music in 1980. 💙🎨💜
"Paint By Numbers" definitely was released as a single. I have a copy of the promo 45, which was remixed and edited, versus the album version used in the music video. It's on my "You Can't Download Vinyl" channel.
I once heard Al say that half of him dreamed of being Leonard Cohen and the other half dreamed of being Chris Britton (guitarist with the Troggs). You can sort of hear both halves on this song.
I’ve been addicted to this song for days. I keep thinking “There’s just no way that this isn’t a Dan Fogelberg song. I mean, EVERYTHING about it matches Fogelberg’s style from the late 1970’s.” But, everything I’ve been able to find out about this song gives credit for the writing of the song to Al Stewart. Fogelberg wasn’t involved in what we hear. Al Stewart’s talent as a composer, musician and performer is shown to be as stellar as always. But I wonder if Dan Fogelberg was someone whom Al admired?
Al sort of dissapeared from the top 40 after this album, although his music afterwards didn't decline in quality at all. The public's musical tastes had changed.

Great song depicting the erroneous judgments made by a stubborn and closed minded person. I've met a few in my life. You can't place people in pigeon holes. Al has more substance in his lyrics than most rock stars.
With Al, I knew it was all about the music and his (studio?) musicians were top notch. However...what about that knockout on keyboards...YOW! Also, was that Peter White on lead guitar?
During the 70s and early 80s, Al always had an electric guitarist in his band, starting with Tim Renwick, then Snowy White, Marc Goldenberg and then Adam Yurman. I was actually brought on as a keyboard player in 1975 and then started to add acoustic guitar to the shows, starting with On The Border, and occasionally electric guitar. The 24 Carrots Album was recorded featuring Shot in the Dark which was the name we gave to Al's band at the time. Adam was part of that band - he played lead on Paint By Numbers and Mondo Sinistro, and I am on Murmansk Run. The only other electric guitar solos I ever recorded with Al were Valentino Way and The Coldest Winter in Memory as far as I remember.
Are you THE Peter White that we all know played with Al Stewart ? It's very nice to hear from you. You guys are one of my favorite bands that played in those years. And I still listen to your music every now and then, you and Al's albums and your instumental albums. Nice music !
