Dankon. Jes ili profesie aktoras en Atlanto kaj estis bonŝance, ke ni eĉ povis dungi ilin por la projekto. Kiam mi decidis refilmi la anglan version (por havi pli bonan sonon), la aktoroj estis tiel okupitaj ke ni nur havis unu horon en la tuta semajno por filmi ĉiujn kune sed ili ne malŝparis tiun horon per fuŝoj aŭ prokrastoj do ni iel sukcesis.

I actually think it was better in Esperanto! (Well, you know... As good as a pun CAN be). 😉

To me it felt like the English scene was the translation, which (whether true or not) says something for the quality of the Esperanto. I think this is the best in the series so far.

@@uosuaq Thank you, Benson (and Rafa!) and you are correct. I wrote the scripts for each of these films in Esperanto first. :)

Thank you, Stefan. It was a great challenge for the actors and I agree that they are all very talented, even the actors in the background who didn't have lines. One of them (Luther) is a member of the local Esperanto club in Atlanta and another (Gracie) has already been cast as the lead in our next film.

@@ExploringEsperanto if this project continues, would you consider people sending their scripts to you? Maybe even a small writers contest? But I would totally understand it, if you want to focus on your own ideas for now. EDIT: Or a writers room workshop at the UK 2020 :)

The main reason I'm writing them is because there are so few people who can write in both languages and who understand the constraints and possibilities of indie film-making. Kaj tre ĉarma aktorino!

Great question. She spoke zero Esperanto before I handed her this script but she is familiar with Spanish and good with accents. She's also a trained actresses and kept asking questions until she knew what she was saying and which words and syllables to emphasize. To date, she had to memorize more Esperanto lines for this film than any other actor I've directed. Many people have commented on how pretty she is, but I hope they also notice how she crushed the script in a language she doesn't even speak and also nailed the comic timing in multiple places. She also starred in the other short film "Soifa/Thirsty" that very same day. Somebody send that woman some fan mail.

I agree, but I think that works well with the premise of the scene.

Yeah I wrote this scene and the scene for the second film around the premise of how can I give one of my actors a way to constantly "read something" in the scene where it won't be distracting but will give them a chance to look down at the script as much as they need to. Because Alenja had so many lines in this one she had to memorize, I had her distractedly "playing a game" on her kindle in the Soifa short so she could be reading that script while she acted it since we filmed them both on the same day and I didn't want to overload her with too much to memorize.

I debated that but the main reason for this channel is teaching Esperanto so by showing that first, it gives you a chance to practice your listening skills and then see how close you were after when it replays in English. Even my non-Esperanto film-making friends told me they prefer seeing the Esperanto version first to see how much of the plot they can correctly guess based on the actors' expressions. I'd love to hear your reasons for why English ought to go first.

@@ExploringEsperanto That's exactly the benefit I took from this. It allowed me to focus on understanding the story to the best of my translation ability, then to follow-up with English as a backup / verification.

@@ExploringEsperanto Knowing the plot beforehand is scientifically proven to increase the comprehension at least for 15-20%, and in my experience, it's even more than that, with me understanding like literally 2 or 3 times more words (200%-300% more effective comprehension). Comprehensive input is a crucial part of learning any language. If you understand most of the things in the given media (plot, dialogues, etc), your brain starts learning significantly faster! I experienced it myself, listening to a few audiobooks in German and understanding nothing and then trying to read the shortened version of the plot first and then listening, my understanding improved from about 10% of the book to like 80% of the book, a HUGE increase in efficiency of learning. Putting Esperanto first is not really useful for most of the people. I watched the video completely only because I already knew some Esperanto. In the past, though, when my Esperanto skills were very basic, I would've just turned the video off thinking ''damn, that is too difficult for me!''. If the English version would've been in the first part, the beginners could watch it firstly so their comprehension of the second part would allow them to actually understand anything and learn. And those who already have some grasp on Esperanto could've just jumped to the second part to test themselves as much as they want.

It’s totally fine to say "volegas" instead of "ege volas." Check www.tekstaro.com and you’ll find other examples of people doing that.

@@araucano2007 Even if it's not often, it's still a grammatically correct verb. You can instantly make any verb superlative by adding the "-eg-" affix. That's part of the beauty of Esperanto. Also, Tekstaro must have changed since you made that comment, because there is now one result for "volegas" (present tense form), from "La ondo de Esperanto". It's from quoted speech.
