I think the producers decided that her character wasn't DUMB enough. She looks and acts like some New Jersey mafia wife in this first season, straight out of "Good Fellas". Al Bundy doesn't sound like he is a working-class stiff from Chicago, either but the audience doesn't care.

I think that was "All in the Family" with Archie Bunker. Archie Bunker with all his prejudice and manirisms showed real love and support for his daughter when needed. Al Bundy shows only disgust for his family and only supports his wife when he can piss off the neighbours.

That's exactly what the producers thought when they came up with the idea for this show. Sitcoms usually have some grain of truth to them and that's why we enjoy watching them. There are actually lots of people who are somewhat like these characters in real life.

I loved Marcy. She was like the Newman of the show. Or a Hillary Clinton. Having a villain like her is great because she represented everything a white, middle-class, married careerist, feminist represents. And Al Bundy represented the Blue Collar worker.

Al represents men. He embodies what is in all of us, and he is proud of it. Of all the things we are ashamed of, he is proud of. We envy his lack of appreciation of his own ignorance. We admire his unwillingness to change, to "evolve". We all want a woman like Peg, who accepts us for what we are, no matter how begrudgingly.

@AL Al is self involved. He thinks he is smart. He is ignorant of his own ignorance. It is this that is the basis of much of his humor. He doesn't care about what is PC or not. In fact he relishes not being PC. He doesn't care about the feelings of others, and is happy when his insults hit home. He is funny because he says and does things we would LIKE to do, but we don't because we KNOW what would happen socially.

Wrong. Only Steve and Marcy could affect their own marriage. Al stayed with Peggy, even though he had some opportunities to, he did not cheat on Peggy and though he tried, he could not leave Peggy the way Steve left Marcy. And who's arms did she go running into? Al's.

The producers and actors refined the characters. It's pretty normal for the characters to look and act somewhat different in the first season of a series. "Peggy" behaves more like a New Jersey mafia wife in this first season.
