A loss is what really got the Saban dynasty started. That 21-14 loss to ULM in 2007 probably changed everything about how Saban wanted to build his program. For the highest paid coach in D1 football to lose to the lowest paid coach was a soul shaker for Saban and Bama fans. The attitude was different after that and it could be said losing to Louisiana-Monroe was the best thing that could have happened to Tide football.

At Bama we don't rebuild, we reload. We may have only 3 actual starters returning, but there are about 15 to 20 players that got significant playing time last year that are returning on defense. I have broken down Nick Sabans Alabama Dynasty into 4 distinct eras so far. If anyone cares to read it is below. Era 1: Overcoming Our Demons (2007-2010) This era was about Alabama overcoming their demons by finally beating their rivals Auburn and LSU, beating a defending National Champion Florida for the SEC Championship in 2009 after coming up short in 2008 and winning a National Championship after many down years in the early 2000s. Mark Ingram also won the first Heisman in Alabamas history which was another Demon that was overcame. Era 2: Building the Dynasty (2011-2014) After having a bit of a transitional year in 2010 at the end of the last era, this era begins with a lot new starters than we saw on the 2009 Championship team. In this era, Alabama wanted to establish a sustained success and build off the culture established in the 1st era. The Dynasty was built in this era with back to back Championships in 2011 and 2012 and a what might have been a 3 peat if not for the Kick 6. This era also ended in a transitional year in 2014 which happened to be the first year of the CFP which would play a huge role in the 3rd era. By the start of the next era in 2015 many of the starters from the 2011 and 2012 teams were gone. Era 3: The CFP and the Clemson Wars (2015-2018) This era is characterized by 3 things which are the early years of the CFP, the rivalry with Clemson, and we saw an evolution of Alabamas offense which really started at the tail end of the last era in 2014 when Kiffin came to Tuscaloosa as OC. In this era Alabama went 2-2 against Clemson who established themselves as the other superpower and both teams won 2 National Championships a piece. We also saw the arrival of Georgia as a superpower as well, although they didn't win any Championships in this era. This was Alabamas most dominant era as they made it to the National Championship all 4 years and unlike the first 2 eras this one ended with a very strong team in 2018 but got beat pretty bad by Clemson in the Natty that year. Era 4: Transfer Portal and NIL (2019-2022) This is the current era we are in with the last year coming up. It started out with a transitional year in 2019 similar to the 2010 year at the end of the 1st era. This era is heavily characterized by the Transfer Portal and NIL. While Clemson who has seen a decline during this era, may have been Alabamas biggest foe in the previous era, the Transfer Portal and NIL have been Alabamas biggest obstacles during this era. They have seemed to be minor setbacks however, because Alabama had one of their greatest teams ever in 2020 and cut it close in 2021 which was also a bit of a rebuilding year and that is something else that defines this era which is how quick the turnover rate has been from year to year because of the transfer portal but also the historic team Alabama had in 2020 and those who were drafted. This era may also be the Heisman era as Alabama has had back to back Heisman winners in 2020 and 2021 and may even get another one in 2022 as well as another National Championship. Era 5: Conference Realignment (2023-2028) This era is going to be defined by all of the conference realignment that is to come in the future. NIL and Transfer portals will also be a factor as we still are learning to figure them out. This era could be 4-6 years and might also be Sabans last era as his contract is supposed to end in 2028 and he is getting old. So far Alabama looks ready to go into this new era as strong as they have ever been with all the good recruiting news latley. Roll Tide Roll!

The Greatest, Most Overrated Coach in History. Another fun fact for your enjoyment. 10 CFP NCs during Saban's time When ranked #1 going into the playoffs LSU 1-0 GA 1-0 MI 1-0 Clem 1-1 Saban 1-4. Greatest? Really? Couldn't hold serve 80% of the time and only could do so during a covid assisted year. He was 0-3 while ranked #1 until 2020.
In terms of competition in the SEC....Alabama will stay at the top. The SEC is 1 🦈 (Alabama) and 13 guppies. For some odd reason the SEC is regarded as a tough conference. The formula the SEC uses is very basic. Each member school schedules a weak non conference slate that includes a team from the FCS. You will notice Alabama schedules their FCS cupcake right before the IronBowl. Somehow though SEC homers will criticize teams from other conferences for having FBS teams from a mid-major conference on their non conference schedule. So when you add up the Won-Loss record for SEC in their weak non conference games it totals up to 50 non conference wins. Conference games being what they are...someway, somehow we are supposed to be impressed with Alabama because they finish 7-1 or 8-0 in a weak conference. The teams they beat in conference are themselves weak because they, like Alabama, play a weak non conference schedule.
