The history of the Temple of The Nazarene, which today houses the sacred image of the Lord of Miracles, is almost as old as the image itself. As recorded in the story of The Lord of Miracles, the sacred image was painted on the wall of a barracks by an Angolan slave. In 1655, a strong earthquake devastated Lima causing considerable human and material losses. The precarious housing of Angolan slaves fell to the ground. But miraculously, the wall where the image of the Purple Christ was embodied was left intact.
The Temple or Sanctuary of The Nazarene, in whose Main Altar is the Sacred Image of the Lord of Miracles, has its origins in this ancient representation of Christ on the Cross, painted on a humble wall of a shed in 17th century Lima.
Every year the Sanctuary receives countless devotees of the painting of Christ on the Cross, who, animated by faith, wish to admire the original image that the slave painted more than 369 years ago and that remains intact to this day, as a miraculous sign of a divine gift to the city of Lima, Peru.
Located next to the temple, the monastery of The Nazarene is the refuge of the Discalced Carmelite Nazarene Mothers. On 12 October 1700, Sebastián de Antuñano, promoter of the first church, donated both the Church and the adjacent land to the pious women of the old Nazarene Institute, who wore the purple habit, which gave rise to the habits of the traditional color used by the devotees of the Lord of Miracles.
Currently, the Discalced Carmelite Nazarene Mothers are the only guardians of the sacred image of the Lord of Miracles.
1 Corinthians 10:16; 11:23-29
Gospel of John 6:26-58.
The Eastern Orthodox Church teaches that the, "change takes place anywhere between the Proskomedia (the Liturgy of Preparation)" and, "the Epiklesis ('calling down'), or invocation of the Holy Spirit 'upon us and upon these gifts here set forth'".
Ignatius of Antioch, writing in about AD 106 to the Roman Christians, says: "I desire the bread of God, the heavenly bread, the bread of life, which is the flesh of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who became afterwards of the seed of David and Abraham; and I desire the drink of God, namely His blood, which is incorruptible love and eternal life."
Writing to the Christians of Smyrna in the same year, he warned them to "stand aloof from such heretics", because, among other reasons, "they abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they confess not the Eucharist to be the flesh of our Saviour Jesus Christ, which suffered for our sins, and which the Father, of His goodness, raised up again."
In about 150, Justin Martyr, referring to the Eucharist, wrote in his First Apology: "Not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Savior, having been made flesh by the Word of God, had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh."
Adoration is a sign of devotion to and worship of Jesus Christ, who is, according to Christian tradition, present in body, blood, soul, and divinity, under the appearance of the consecrated host, that is, sacramental bread. From a theological perspective, the adoration is a form of latria, based on the tenet of the real presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.
Christian meditation performed in the presence of the Eucharist outside Mass is called Eucharistic meditation. It has been practiced by such as Peter Julian Eymard, Jean Vianney and Thérèse of Lisieux.
Oremos.
