The longest piano work of Jehan Alain. Written at the age of nineteen; premièred on 5 June 1984 at the chapel of the National institute for blind youth in Paris.

The manuscript of the ‘Forty Variations’ for piano contains very little indications for tempi and expressions. We did not consider adding such directions: the title of each piece already describes a ‘state of expression’ which is eloquent enough in itself. Performers are therefore free to pick their tempi preferences for each variation according to its ‘state of expression’.
The nuances will also flow from the titles. We can very well nuance within each variation. The author has only given starting points or outlines. The absence of nuances does not mean playing 'straight'... one has to know how to adapt.
We have noted in parentheses a number of missing time signatures as well as numerous accidentals, slurs, rests, and note values that require clarification.
A final note for the interpreters: the author has stated, as simultaneously as it is a compositional exercise, we are also bequeathed the ability to amuse, with his legendary sense of humour. Let’s not be afraid to laugh with him!

Das Manuskript der „Vierzig Variationen“ für Klavier enthält nur sehr wenige Angaben zu Tempi und Ausdrucksweise. Wir haben nicht daran gedacht, solche Anweisungen hinzuzufügen: Der Titel jedes Stücks beschreibt bereits eine „Ausdrucksstufe“, die für sich genommen beredt genug ist. Den Interpreten steht es daher frei, ihre Tempi-Präferenzen für jede Variation entsprechend ihrer „Ausdrucksstufe“ auszuwählen.
Die Nuancen werden auch aus den Titeln fließen. Wir können innerhalb jeder Variation sehr gut nuancieren. Der Autor hat nur Ansatzpunkte oder Umrisse gegeben. Das Fehlen von Nuancen bedeutet nicht, "geradeaus" zu spielen ... man muss wissen, wie man sich anpasst.
Wir haben in Klammern eine Reihe fehlender Taktarten sowie zahlreiche Vorzeichen, Bindebögen, Pausen und Notenwerte notiert, die einer Klärung bedürfen.
Eine letzte Anmerkung für die Interpreten: Der Autor hat festgestellt, dass es uns gleichzeitig mit einer kompositorischen Übung auch die Fähigkeit zum Amüsieren mit seinem legendären Sinn für Humor vererbt. Haben wir keine Angst, mit ihm zu lachen!
