It's like that joke about the old Irishman crying in a bar. He says: "You see this bar? I built this bar with my own bare hands. I cut down every tree and made the lumber myself. I toiled away through the wind and cold, but do they call me McGreggor the bar builder? No." He continued "Do you see that stone wall out there? I built that wall with my own bare hands. I found every stone and placed them just right through the rain and the mud, but do they call me McGreggor the wall builder? No." "Do ya see that pier out there on the lake? I built that pier with my own bare hands, driving each piling deep into ground so that it would last a lifetime. Do they call me McGreggor the pier builder? No." "But ya fuck one goat.."

Fox didn't just cancel Firefly, they had so little understanding of it that they showed the episodes out of order so they could show episodes that had more action first. They just didn't get it.
Actually that was a good move IMO. It's also a common thing to do, hook them on action and then do the backstory episode. BBC has done that for decades and I believe even Joss said it was likely a good move.
@@ColinRichardson yep same with me.. that's also why i first watched the show in the correct order and was all the more baffled when i heard they aired it out of order originally
There is big opportunity for producers who figure out to judge popularity in smarter ways. If the company with the money knew how popular Firefly could be, like it became years after it was cancelled, then they could figure out a better marketing strategy instead of cancelling successful projects that they have already spent a lot of money on...
I heard say once that if you treat shows like wine they get better as they age. If you treat it like a 5$ bottle you get what you deserve and never unlock its true potential. How do those sour grapes taste now hmm?
“Nobody says how i got it on the air” alright lets give you full credit gail berman She also told joss to film it in a different aspect ratio She had the show air out of order She had the show air in a bad time slot She had the show start skipping airing weeks She had the show cancelled before the last few episodes aired She had it so the last episodes didnt air for a year She had it so the last episodes took 4 years to reach international audiences, and then never aired it again She didnt cancel firefly, she boiled it in acid, shot it 7 times, let joss bandage it a little, shot it 7 more times, buried it in a shallow grave, and then asked why people think shes the bad guy while she PISSED ON THE GRAVE, all while disrespecting joss whedon who built Fox a multi million dollar television EMPIRE Gail Berman- she cancelled Firefly
@@Penfold197 joss* is very much a dick. Weve learned alot recently about how much a dick. But the show being cancelled wasnt over him being a dick, it was fox being run by bigger assholes like Gail Berman, who, if you didnt know, cancelled firefly
@@Penfold197 NO ONE disputes Josh is a raging dick, except maybe Josh but that had nothing to do with her apparent attempts to repeatedly apparently destroy the show, she is like Kathleen Kennedy before Kathleen Kennedy
The part about international audiences isn't quite right. Here in Australia, it may have gotten a bad time slot. But it was a time slot where we knew geeky shows had a tendency to play. And they played everything in order without skipping weeks. Pretty sure we got the last episodes before the US. Also, they reran it plenty of times.
Maybe it applies to Joss being accused of harrassment- maybe sexual harrassment of Charisma Carpenter. Don't know whethr the charge is true, but even if it is true- should it negate all the good things he has done?
@@HoldenNY22 When two thirds of your cast and several crewman are all coming forward with the same allegations they are likely true. And no, what he did doesn't negate the good shows that he made. But it does mean he shouldn't ever be allowed to be in that kind of position of power again. A good television show is not worth the price of thr abject misery and suffering of dozens of the people who work on it. Especially not because of one guy's ego.
@@quinnsinclair7028 _ I really don't enough about the allegations against him to make a fair Comment on them. Also, sometimes- time has to pass before one could see the real truth of what exactly happenned. By the way- can you point the way or tell me who has been covering this incident with Joss in depth? Thanks
no one wants to remember the good people do, it reminds them how inferior they are, remembering the crappy stuff people do though.... few things make one feel better than saying, "at least I'm not as stupid as THAT person!"
Idk about marching band, but when I was a kid my sister had this cat poster w/ that or a paraphrase of it...& it was a kitten in a spaghetti pot covered in spaghetti looking forward at the camera. I love kittens & spaghetti so I adored that poster. Like, I wanted to turn into a kitten & jump into a pot of spaghetti or pick up and cuddle the spaghetti covered kitten. Kinda the opposite of the intended point of the poster I think. I mean, sure it was cute, but I don’t think u were expected to reward the cat for having good taste in food.
Wiki "More controversial was her decision to place Firefly in the "Friday night death slot", air the episodes out of order, and then cancel the series prior to the end of its first season" 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
In her defense the advertisers had run for the hills after the dismal ratings for the first 4 episodes. This show didn't even make enough money cover the electricity to power up the transmitters while they aired that is how badly it cratered with the audience.
THIS! I remember that time slot. I remember the string of interesting shows that got dumped into it....to die. I loved Firefly but I had no illusions about it's future while I watched it Friday nights. To be clear I don't slam this on Gail. Fox in General seemed to have this great reservoir of talent and their corp culture seemed determined to flush down the toilet.
@@From-North-Jersey Well, that's what happens when you show it out of order. I remember when it came out. I lost interest immediately, and wrote it off for years, until it ended up on streaming services, and now it's one of my favourite sci-fi shows of all time. The audience had no idea what was going on. If it would have aired in the correct order, I have no doubt it would have gone at least another season or two.
Wikipedia Feb 2021: "Berman is best known for cancelling Firefly." "best known" -> LOL! She's 64 now and when she eventually retires this will be her life accomplishment. ;-)
Additional Wikipedia mention: ".... during this time she had the unfortunate job of canceling the cult classic TV series Firefly, following her decisions to place it in the “Friday night death slot” and air the episodes out of order."
@@TheBashar327 Killing Star Wars... Not true! Butthurt people who couldn't for the sake of their life enjoy a movie got grumpy about it. That's it! Cancelling Firefly and creating a movie are two distinct things, you know?
Thats like Nathan.. He's done more things, had a role in a movie with Tom Hanks, played in TV Shows that lasted a lot longer than Firefly. But he'll forever be Malcom Reynolds, the Captain in that canceled tv show Firefly.
She also cancelled Futurama. The first time, I mean. And that was after putting it in a timeslot an hour before the Simpsons aired where it was constantly preempted by football games. Screw Gail Berman.
If you know someone familiar with photoshop, have them make a real looking headstone with Gail Berman's name on it and that quote below it. Have her real date of birth and just a blank spot for the date of death since she isn't dead yet. It would be great to be a fly on the wall the first time she sees it....lol.
What do you mean, "end"? If I'm not mistaken, that was just halfway. I do believe there were supposed to be 22 episodes of the first season (which is why there wasn't really an obvious overarching plot, just small hints, since we know Joss like his slow burns for a major impact later in the series like in Buffy after the first two seasons).
The problem with this is, if she knew what she had done, she would never speak of it again. If it ever came up in her presence she would simply apologize and leave the room. This makes it seem as if she can bear speaking of her betrayal.
As of 2-25-2021, Wikipedia's entry on Gail Berman: "During this time she canceled the cult classic TV series Firefly following decisions to place it in the “Friday night death slot” and air the episodes out of order.[7]"
At random times in public conversations I'll drop an, "Oh, and Gail Berman cancelled "Firefly."" It's the best non-sequetor you can have in your back pocket.
Gail Berman cancelled Firefly, Jeff Epstein didn’t kill himself, and no sane person believes that someone who held rallies nobody showed up for was the person to receive the most votes for President ever....
It sounds like she got a PR firm to basically patrol the Wikipedia article to ensure that any mention of Firefly has been taken out. You can look at a revision that was done by someone recently at 1:26 - en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gail_Berman&oldid=1008784384 - which is now on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gail_Berman but, if you look at the talk mentioned, someone mentioned watching this same segment and therefore *someone* always is watching. XD Either way, Ms Berman - look at the bright side; William Atherton (Walther Peck) couldn't walk into a bar in New York without someone asking him to "step outside" due to him playing Walther Peck.
"Before BermanBraun, Berman was the first and only female executive to hold the top posts at both a major film studio and television network and she cancelled Firefly." I love the inventive ways people find to sneak her most famous accolade back on to her Wiki.
From Gail Bermans wiki: During this time she had the unfortunate job of canceling the cult classic TV series Firefly, following decisions to place it in the “Friday night death slot” and air the episodes out of order.[7]
Alan Tudyk is currently starring in Resident Alien,... It's a show about an alien who's been sent to eradicate all human life from earth, ... but before he can complete the mission, he crash lands and has to live amongst the locals while he hunts down the rest of his ship. Well worth watching.
No one really gives a flip about what Hitler did before, nor Stalin, or even Einstein. You will be remembered for your "main event" that caught peoples attention. And You canceled Firefly.
Must be changing at the moment because I couldn't see it anymore. All I saw was "she had the unfortunate job of canceling the cult classic TV series Firefly"
jumped into this show knowing nothing about it years after the fact on Netflix and man talk about a show thats right up my ally! i friggen loved this show! wish it could have gone on for years! the cast was perfect!
The show had no audience or advertisers, its really hard to pay for a show without any support...browncoats are poor white guys no one gives a shit about..
I checked Gail Berman's wikipedia and it's still there. "During this time she canceled the cult classic TV series Firefly following decisions to place it in the “Friday night death slot” and air the episodes out of order."
Watching this show for only my second time currently, and man what a ball drop by Fox. If this would've been out out now, on Netflix it'd be signed up for at least 4 seasons. Great show.
As of today, March 1st, 2021, Wikipedia currently ends the paragraph pertaining to her work at Fox with the following sentence: "During this time she canceled the cult classic TV series Firefly following decisions to place it in the “Friday night death slot” and air the episodes out of order." It then has a linked reference to this interview with Berman in which she says she doesn't think the episode order really mattered. communityvoices.post-gazette.com/arts-entertainment-living/tuned-in/27525-rethinking-firefly In my opinion, she deserves to be shunned from producing entertainment. She made me cry.
That may be algorithmic. But sometimes stuff like that happens where it's like on the radio on the way home, then someone is in the t-shirt, then someone will mention the band (not necessarily Rush, just as an example, this sort of thing) and that kind of stuff makes me wonder if we're in a simulation....
And still, it states on Wikipedia, "During this time, Berman infamously canceled the cult classic TV series Firefly following decisions to place it in the “Friday night death slot” and air the episodes out of order."
FROM WIKIPEDIA: Gail Berman (born August 17, 1956) is an American producer and television executive, perhaps best known for cancelling the beloved TV series "Firefly".
I don't know who this guy is, or the guy next to him or how I landed here. I have no idea what Firefly is either, but what I do know is, that Gail Berman is the woman who cancelled it! (And I don't know Gail Berman in any other context whatsoever 🤣)
The theories about why the show was cancelled are sooo cute. Can't anybody accept that a lot of the time, people just plain ol' fuck things up out of incompetence, spite, or indifference?
There was a military officer, descended from a governor, was o0ne of the leaders in capturing Fort Ticonderoga, distinguished himself at Saratoga, made major general in his 30s. Well thought of by George Washington Ain't what we remember benedict Arnold for.
Thanks Google, I haven't thought of or mentioned Firefly in years until yesterday. I mentioned some show was a rip off of Firefly, now I have Firefly videos being recommend to me...
