I am a proud owner of an alano espanol. I went to Spain to get it. As it was mentioned here, alanos are not fighting dogs but pack dogs used for wild boar hunting, wild cattle handling, guard&defence ( oh they are fearless guardians, don't worry ). My dog ( Dick de las Tinieblas ) is great with kids, patient, obedient, intelligent, very active ( long daily walks are a necessity ), agile, fast, powerful and he can run for hours ( literally ). I could go on and on, but
This dog was used in revival of several well established breeds. The alano espanol was used as functional, working dog, and was/is so rare, that it is not recognized outside Spain. Where I live ( Slovenia, Europe ), my alano is the only one registered, which means that it is probably the only one in my country. The vets have never heard of this breed before Anyway, great dog from all points of view. Anzeus
These are great dogs! Very old breed. They are quite friendly with other dogs if socialized properly from an early age. What I like about this breed is you can keep them in packs and they are all happy! Thanks for posting video!
El mitico retorno del alano, gran video, la vida es buena, solo basta ver estos ejemplares felices en el campo. Que su retorno sea mas para bien que para desvirtuar la raza. Congratulations. =)
Alano espanol is a very ancient breed. The name itself derives from »The Alans«, a barbarian tribe that invaded Europe in some 5th century A.C. This tribe brought this type of dogs to Europe. It is said that this type of dog was present in several parts of Europe, but remained as it was 1500 years back only in Spain. It was almost extinct, but if my memory serves me right, it was »revived« in the 80's. It was a serious project ( they found pure alanos in secluded parts of Spain I think ).
I heard most of the ture alano's where found in northern parts hidden away. Glad they used pure bred alano's and didn't just put one to a cane, press and so on like normally happens when bringing back a breed!
Lee.
No they are not a very dominant breed! because you can safely keep males together in a pack! You cannot do this with dominant breeds or they will fight each other some day. All male dogs are territorial to some degree, even a small Yorkshire terrier but holding territory is different to dog on dog dominant behaviour. My friend in Spain has 26 Alano Espanol and only 3 of the males he has to keep separate. Its how you raise them that determines behaviour. Great Dogs! Presa is Dominant!!
I have alano his name is torrez have 5 months and so many energy i love this dogs Torrez must running every day 2 hours or when he will be alone at home He "do something wrong" :) bite my shoes or something :)
@ConiferTreez Are you familiar with the "White English" from south Georgia? And what is your opinion on this breed? Every working bulldog has a function and from what I've seen of the Alano Espanol, they are very quick on their feet for hunting hogs.
