In the last year of my uncle Alasdair’s life he read excerpts from his favourite books to me - as we sat together at his home in Glasgow. These recordings are very special to me and I want to share them with you. You can find my personal perspective on Yorgos Lanthimos's movie version of Poor Things as a match for Alasdair's book in A Gray Space: alasdairgrayspace.net/head/al...
In this podcast Alasdair introduces his Gothic novel Poor Things and rereads chapters four and five - A Fascinating Stranger and Making Bella Baxter.
I couldn't have made these podcasts without the help of family and friends:
Alasdair Gray - uncle
David Thomas - technical advice and support
Berniya Hamie - closing piano
Matthew Robinson - rereads logos
Featured book: Poor Things by Alasdair Gray. If you have any questions or thoughts please do leave a comment. And there are more Alasdair Gray inspired projects in A Gray Space | A creative space inspired by Alasdair Gray: www.alasdairgrayspace.net/

I saw the movie and was curious about the book. I'd love to hear a version of the audio book read by Gray!

I was drawn to the movie after learning that Tony McNamara had written the script. In The Favorite, McNamara had replaced Lanthimos's coldness as seen in The Lobster, and my hopes were justified in Poor Things. Gray's tone is closer to McNamara than Lanthimos.

Interesting. I haven't seen The Favourite or Lanthimos's earlier films but I'd heard about the coldness and was concerned, as it's the opposite of Alasdair's work for me. But having seen the film I think it's a great creative complement for Alasdair's novel. Exciting and challenging in different and interesting ways and definitely not bland or ordinary!

What a perfect antidote to the garish excesses of the film

I'm certainly not trying to change your mind about the film but I actually found it a really interesting creative complement to Alasdair's book and I've just shared my thoughts on our website if you're interested in reading them: alasdairgrayspace.net/head/alasdair-gray-yorgos-lanthimos-poor-things-book-movie-review

@@alasdairgrayspace Thank you I haven't made my mind up on the film, performances were excellent, the fisheye lens was good, but it was a little one dimensional

You have to say yes to another excess

@@douglaswright2143Well, one dimensional in that it focuses on McAndless' narrative, and discards 2/3 of the narrative of the entire book (including Bella's story that directly refutes EVERYTHING in the earlier tale!). As a movie, I can see why that choice was made. Stylistically, Lanthimos projected Gray's play with printed forms into film. There's a reason Gray gave Lanthimos freedom to adapt the book.

Does an full audiobook of “Poor Things” exist?

I think one might have been recorded but not with Alasdair reading it, I'm afraid.

Available on Hoopla (& your library), read by Russ Bain and Kathryn Drysdale. It looses the wild excesses of Grey's novel and Lanthimos's film.
