They are smart birds...later in the season the bears often only eat the fattiest part of the fish and leave the rest...then it's all for the birds...so to speak... ;-)

Me too! And when I was staying at the lodge there (Brooks Lodge in Alaska), they would pull fish out of the same river the bears were fishing in, and cook them for us! 🤤

😂😂😂😂😂😂me too thinking the same but the bear most of the time eat only the brain, eggs and skin to build up fat for hibernation. At that time, a bear's profit margin in calories is so high that it can ignore some excess fish.

I think being this close allows them to pick scraps from the water before they get swept away...and since the bear is lying down they probably feel they would have time to fly off if he jumped to his feet trying to chase them. I also think those birds have probably learned that the bears much prefer to eat the salmon which are easier to catch and full of protein and fat...instead of them!

Maybe you were a bear who wished to be a human in it's next life.

You're right about that...those bears catch a lot of fish in a day though...the ones that are good at it at least. And in this spot it's easier to catch them which is why this is such a bear magnet...

Ugly or bear 218 really wasn't ugly, he just had ugly shedding pattern. After growing his fur, he was pritty handsome bear.

I think they probably named him that because of the prominent scars across his face. But as Tatjana points out, they weren't prominent when his fur was fully grown. Good question...I think bears are so much more powerful than humans, and this also applies to their jaws and teeth. I think they just crush the bones into small bits while chewing the fish and swallow the whole thing...

They are pretty impressive for sure! Of course they get to practice all day every day for about 4 months straight every summer...not to mention their lives depend on their fishing success!

Normally early in the year (June/July) they eat the whole fish cause they are super hungry...in August/September they often just eat skin and brains cause those parts contain the most fat. The more fat they consume in the fall, the better prepared they are for hibernation.

No, their jaws just crush the large bones into little bits and the smaller ones don't bother them. These bears are much sturdier than people or dogs.

Yeah he just pulled the fish out of the stream seconds before. Definitely alive. The salmon swim upstream to spawn that time of the year (July) and the bears gather in some areas (like near waterfalls) to catch them...

They have really powerful jaws/teeth, they pretty much smash the bones...

Don't be sad :-) ... The bear respects the birds by not chasing or trying to kill them. The birds respect the bear by not trying to steal the fish from him, but waiting for scraps to float downriver. The bears come to this place because it's the best place to catch salmon...but they don't succeed every time. The birds come to this place because it's the best place to get some leftovers from the bears...but they don't succeed every time. Such is nature! :-)

This is absolutely true! Lots of healthy fats too. The bears on Alaska's coast grow much bigger and heavier than those living inland (e.g. Denali) because they have access to such a perfect food... Thanks for your comment!

He's been gone a few years now. I shot this footage in 2013 which I believe is the last year he was observed. Before that, he was a regular at Brooks Falls for at least 10 years... :-)
