#camp #hiking #bear
I wake up along the shore of upper Twin Lakes, Alaska near Hope Creek and discover that a bear has visited my campsite, and then I run into it on the trail behind the camp as I start hiking up into the mountains and the Cowgill benches. Today is my last day at Dick Proenneke's cabin, I fly out by bushplane back to Port Alsworth, Alaska and then prepare for an exciting day tomorrow.
Thanks for watching!

Being a Hunter, Fisher, born and raised in the mountains of British Columbia, no way I could do what your doing in Ontario. There is something about living in the mountains that blow the mind, and it never gets old!

Alaska, my homeland, and the homeland of my ancestors for thousands of years. There is no where else in the world I'd want to live. From the harshest weather to the sunniest day, it's all good. What you felt sitting on the mountain side looking at God's creation, I feel that everyday. Great job in putting together this awesome video. One day you'll be sitting back and reliving the experience. It was a pleasure seeing what I love from your eyes. I look forward to watching you work on your beautiful creation as well. Take care, God bless.

Sharon Kay Alaska is my home also. Four generations. People in the lower 48 talk about their mountains. They don’t have mountains, theirs are hills, we have mountains. Where do you live? I am in Anchorage now but raised in Fairbanks, way out on the Steese Hwy. Camai.

I enjoyed this video to the max! I have experienced that indescribable feeling. When I was younger, after my divorce in the early eighties, I went camping a lot. One of those memorable feelings happened when I awoke one morning and my van was surrounded by a huge herd of elk headed for the lake south of William's, AZ. I just sat there in silent awe. Then the biggest bull of the herd came out of the woods and stared at me for a long time. What a magnificent creature! He was in his prime, and buffed, with huge antlers! And every muscle rippled when he moved. Think my little dog sensed my feelings, she never made a sound either, just looked. One of my best memories.

Very humbling and heartfelt words spoken from a true outdoorsman. Great self-reflection in which we could all learn to appreciate this space we all share. Our earthly home. Thanks for setting the example for us Shawn, just like Proenneke did all those years ago. Respect to you good sir 👏🏼

🌲🍁🌿I’ve just watched Dick Proenneke cabin alone in the wilderness after watching your video. So beautiful to see things haven’t changed and it looks as though he just popped out. It’s a shame technology back then couldn’t pick up the vibrant colours on film like we have today. The wildlife he saw and the trust they had in him hand feeding them is so beautiful. I’m glad you got to experience this first hand and your reaction to being there was lovely and you can treasure these memories forever.

I think that it is the feeling of returning to the world around us, not just being a spectator. What you are doing is trying to be part of the beauty we are surrounded by, and trusting yourself to be "self reliant". After spending all those years part of the corporate machine, you can return to being an individual. It is what I want to return to and eventually will once I've gotten a few more details worked out. We all have our vision of the perfect life, and I am glad to see you living yours!!! I think that is your channel's success.

Having seen many places that I had grown to love, in my rear view mirror - I had a lump in my throat and a bit of a tear in my eye, as I watched your departure from a place you spent a short time in physically, but spent years getting to know and prepare. For me, the last place I had to leave was supposed to be my forever home .... but life intervened and broke my spirit for all intent and purposes. You are a lucky man in many senses of the word, but I also realized that you fought hard and won over diversity and have come out of it even stronger. Be proud of what you've accomplished, for you have paved the road for your future and your family ...... I admire your ethics. I can only hope that I live long enough to experience some of my "bucket list". I will have to be happy with my dreams for now. Take care ... all the best for you and your family .... they are cut from the same stout stock.

I think sometimes that humans have a genetic memory and we long to live the way humans did for thousands of years. Living independent and self reliant are probably still heavy in our genes. We tend to think we are not a part of, or perhaps we are above nature... but nature and it’s rhythms still flows in our veins... we are not so far removed. You are doing what so many of us long to do... but I think that is part of why we connect with Dick’s life and we are interested in what you are doing in yours. I know from my time in north, that the rhythms of time and seasons are more pronounced than in the south. It is overwhelming when we connect with the part of ourselves that longs for a nature and all its offerings. I know the call of geese still gets me... and I always enjoy the seasonal comings and goings of the birds. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all your videos but especially these.

easy and simple tip for hikers to increase avoidance with bears. jingle bells or cow bell strung to backpack that sound will make bears avoid you soon as they hear the sound. of course carry some solid protection with you spray or firearm. sound is only preemptive measure. love the channel keep up the good work :)
@rrfields65
@rrfields65 5 лет назад
Actually you don't want jiggling sounds at all, bear and other predators think it is the dinnerbell for heard livestock meal ! Carry the spray, big guns, and a compress air horn bottle ( very fing loud )!

I can totally relate to what you says about being overwhelmed by the scenery, nature and the mountains. When i go to our mountains (that is not near as high as these in Alaska) i feel kind of the same thing. The solitude, the feeling of actually being at the mercy of the land. All small human in the realm of Mother Nature where she rules and decides your faith. Sarek and Padjelanta National park in my country makes you feel humble and in awe. Great video(s)! ... lived in Orillia for number of years & when my youngest was in school full time (grade 1) I went to high school for my grade 12 diploma - which I did ... it was Twin Lake Secondary School ... lol ... the funny thing is the teacher who taught me in English at Twin Lakes also ended up teaching my sons in Park Street (my boys have a different name than me now that I go by my maiden name) ... lol ... Canada also has some great mountains to see - Ontario, Alberta, B.C., & the NWT ... Another good book to read - Wilderness Seasons by Ian & Sally Wilson - Life & Adventure in Canada's North ... it too details what it was like to build there .. Keep up the GREAT work you are doing - You're one of Canada's greatest showing how it's done, the Canadian way ... We love you for it! ... I've done up my peaches & doing my chili sauce for this winter - I think it will come early this year.

Good Sunday Shawn! I'm fully envious of you actually doing bucket lists! The mountain is certainly beautiful, but a lot different from an Asia! Your videos are bringing a lot of my childhood memories! As a child, I used to hike up into the mountains every chance I used to get and sometimes all by myself. Now I am beginning to wondering if your buck lists includes Himalayas and Kilimanjaro? 👍🏔🏞🌅🌄

So much of life has been taken from mankind mr James living close to nature and being able to build a home. Grow food etc. That many of us love to see your ability to do just that. One day humans will be able to do these things so keep showing us your skills. Thank you so much. Carol and Bob
