I used to work at that grocery store in 1997. I’m not sure if they still have the deli but we had one and I used to run it. I absolutely loved being there. I’m also from Whitehorse Yukon married an American so we live in Las Vegas Nevada now, but our time in Skagway was the best time of our lives we met the greatest people Ken Cox from the police department is still our best friend. ! Thank you so much for showing the grocery store now I can show my children where we used to work so long ago!!
@@offyourbeatenpath How do they offset the ridiculousness of those prices in Skagway? Does it only cost $100 a month to rent a one bedroom apartment, or something?
@@CooManTunes that is a good question...rents are not super cheap, but a lot of seasonal employers offer discounts on housing during the summer. Property taxes are lower. Car insurance is lower. Car registration is lower. Our clinic has a sliding scale fee due to grants.
I lived in Skagway in 63 and 64. I worked on the White Pass, first as a section hand, and then on the engine crew. Looking at your video sure brings back memories. We now live in Hilo Hawaii another isolated small town. My wife and I would like to take the ferry up next summer. She has never seen Alaska. Thanks.
One of the local churches has a food bank...but since we are a small remote town, that kind of access is tough sometimes. We do have a sharing community...and stock up when traveling.
I would like to suggest to you to move your camera much more slowly because it’s impossible to focus on the prices which is what we find interesting as well. So if you could just pan a little more slowly we can read what you’re passing. Thank you. I do find it interesting
I couldn’t get over the price for the frozen burgers 😮 I mean whoa! Alaska is so beautiful and I would love to live there, however, I feel like I would be suffering without being able to afford food. Could you show more grocery stores and their prices of food? Thank you so much 😊
the farmer in wisconsin november 2022 got $20 dollars per hundred pounds of milk. i just shipped some steers november 2022 and i averaged $1.23 a pound for steak and roasts
Are you guys able to take advantage of many websites with free shipping to get food cheaper? Oh I wrote this before I finished watching the video. That makes sense!
I live in Charleston, WV - and some of those prices aren’t too far off, and I live in a fairly cheap state … the 12-pack of soda for 10.49, it’s about $8/12 pack today can get a deal if you buy 3 or 4 or 2 at a time, eggs are ridiculous right now, milk ata gas station can run ya 6-7$, just depends on where I shop and what brands I buy - it can be cheap and plentiful or expensive and not very much … Also I could go to a dollar store where EVERYTHING is $1 , but the portions are way smaller - I’ve grocery shopped at the dollar store numerous times- some things are a deal and some are not- just have to watch what you buy for $1 because it could $.79 or 89 cents at the grocery store for example = bad deal …. But I bet a store trip up there can turn into 1,000 dollars pretty fast 😳 I guess it’s all that gold money up there or just people with money in general that can afford to just go off grid , I’d say it’s a little of both… also I take it you don’t see many homeless people either, the homeless can live better here than a lot of people- money wise , they just don’t have a house to go to is all
I live in Green Bay Wisconsin USA the same Pizza that you just showed in your grocery store at the Dollar Tree in Green Bay Wisconsin it's only $4 for it for the same Pizza what a difference
You lived in Florida.... Now you live in Alaska... Lol..... That is what I consider a literal cross country move...... Some of the prices there in your town are not all that different from anywhere else in the lower 48..... Some of them however are a little bit pricey such as the gallon of milk..... Part of the reason the prices are a little pricey where you are, Is because of the aviation fuel in the bush planes as well fuel for the barges.... . It's very different than the lower 48 where you have a constant supply met on semi trucks every day..... Then you're only covering the cost of diesel fuel...
It can be tough. A lot of our town works in tourism...and our season only lasts for 6 months. So we have to make most of our money during that time. Other parts about living here can be cheaper...so it often balances out.
Publix can be pricey for sure...but we love it there and it is usually convenient...lol! When we lived in Florida, I would sometimes do online shopping at Walmart for pick up because prices were so much lower!
100%! We were in Chicago earlier this year...it was overwhelming the amount of choices! The chip aisle alone was half the size of our whole store...lol
Compared to Florida, where we are from originally prices are a bit much. An 18 pack of frozen hamburgers in Florida would not be $41. There are a lot of things that are actually cheaper in Alaska too! Car insurance, property taxes, etc.
Very interesting. Prices aren't much more than what we pay for some things (if you ignore the exchange). The pop was definitely sticker shock when we bought it in Seward! We can usually get 2 cases for $11 (plus deposit), but one case was that much.
What in the hell are you talking about lady, every single price she showed was absolutely insane. I live in Seattle and everything is crazy expensive here, and it’s half of the price of Skagway.
I don’t know what everybody’s on about because these prices are crazy. None of the prices I see in this video are even close to what you pay in my area this is insane.
this is insane. imagine paying this much for groceries while also living in winter 24/7. props to you and everyone else in alaska. if i was born there and couldnt afford to move id fucking end it with and icicle through the back of my head.
For the most part, yes. But in our town because it is tourism based, a lot of people are technically unemployed in the winter....so you work a ton in the summer to make up for it!
Even with the conversion difference! I have noticed in Whitehorse that meats can be more expensive, but we find a lot of stuff cheaper once we factor in the conversion.
@@offyourbeatenpath I just went shopping milk was $5.85 4L 2% 3% milk was over $6 my hamburger cost me $11.84 for a pound 2 sticks of celery $2.80 a freaking tomato cost me just under $3 and that was for 1 tomato a small can of cream corn $ 1.99 danm prices lol 😆 and thats was just some of the stuff I bought
I live in the Mid-Atlantic. lower 48, and those prices are very High. I shop at a club store and pay much less, and there are out of stocks , but nothing to be inconvenienced about. A Package of Frozen Burger Patties for $48 !
Ahh hell nah. Everything is cheap here at H-E-B. It’s our grocery store chain here in Texas. That’s insane $41 for burgers? They sell at 7-9 bucks at H-E-B.
hummm lets see.... beyond freezing cold, dark 24hrs a day part of the year , everything very expensive not just food plus very limited selection, no thank you
Here’s an idea get some friends that live around the world find the cheapest Costco where your friends live have them go shopping for you stick everything in a box and send it to you and it will still cost you less
That's like whole foods on steroids. I only buy beer at the one here cause it's cheaper than many stores. That's crazy but what else can you do but grow your own or barter and trade.
Funny! We spend several months in Spain during our winters because it is much cheaper (and sunnier...lol). Our produce department has done an awesome job in our store.
You really have to appreciate what it takes to get such a wide selection of items to such a remote place. I know if I lived in bush Alaska I'd be thankful for anything that's available, and not complain about the prices too much. It's not like grocery stores can just magically make Crush soda or Tombstone pizza appear on shelves. Most Americans who don't live in remote areas probably give little thought as to how their foods, beverages, and snacks get to them.
This person posting these videos is a parasite from social media... I was there for 3 years 2012-5, this is NOT what the store looks like unless it is January when the planes are not flying.
I work at Publix a grocery store in Florida- it’s been around since 1930. We are in Florida all the way up to Virginia. The 4th quarter of 2023 we will expand into Kentucky
