My wife and I go into the Alaska backcountry by snowmachine to spend three days and two nights camping out in a hot tent with woodstove. It was a very relaxing and peaceful time that we thoroughly enjoyed. We were sorry to end the campout when it was time to head back home. For more info on the UP5 tent we use in this video as well as the other products offered by Russian Bear Market, please click on the link below.

Hello my name is Lonnie and My wife is Connie.
Here at Far North Bushcraft And Survival you will learn about many long forgotten tricks and tips of the old time woodsmen. Not only will you learn about bushcraft / woodcraft but you will learn many things that will help you to survive in less than ideal "survival" situations as well. Come along and sit with me by the campfire as I delve into these subjects in a way that you can easily learn to then do yourself.
I will show you how to make shelters, gather food, use wild medicines as well as start fires with or without matches, lighters, ferro rods, etc

How big is this tent? Is up5 for 5 ppl? Seemed like it gets warmer than the tarp hut. Is it?

@@DameObserver108 This tent configured like it is, is warmer than the tarp tent in my last video configured like it is. However if the tarp tent had a second skin over all that had an air gap between skins, had an equally insulated floor system installed, had all air leaks sealed other than what is needed for stove air consumption and had as big a stove, it might be comparable but yet probably not quite as good due to the larger overall ceiling area of the tarp tent.

@@alaskankare I enjoy mostly novels. I enjoy a fairly wide selection of topics. However I am limited in what I read because I have certain criteria that the books need to meet such as very little (preferably none) objectionable language and no sex scenes. I am in no way against sex and in fact am VERY MUCH in favor of it but it MUST be within marriage and a very private affair. After all it was God who created it. And of course the book needs to be well written so that the plot, and character interactions are all believable. I have even enjoyed reading some fantasy type books but again the books need to be written in such a way as to be believable even if what is discussed is impossible. So those criteria severely limit what is available to read. I am on a constant quest for preferably prolific authors whose writings meet those criteria.

Those rubber floor squares look like a great idea. The “rope trick” to pop the tent up is brilliant …. At my age I was a bit concerned about buying a UP 2 as so many RU-vid demonstrators much younger than me seem to struggle when popping it up and make comments about how much force and effort it takes. I think your rope idea has convinced me to make the purchase. Thanks.

One of my favorite camping trips you have done. This is the way I would camp now, with this very same system. The way the stove worked for you in -20c is perfect for this country too. That was a good tip, to prop the back of the stove up for better ventilation. It was nice to hear you play the flute again, I really love the sound of it. Enjoyed the meals Connie, you are a great camp cook, I wish I was there. I was thinking that knitting in this tent with the stove going would be lovely, and there you were knitting:) It's one of my hobbies too, very enjoyable while camping. Well, I'm viewing older videos, it's so nice to see them again and refresh on techniques etc of wilderness camping. Take care and blessings to you and family.

Always good to see a video from Lonnie and Connie.....an unexpected gift. Look at you go with those fancy graphics and editing. Is there anything you can't do. I remember the video of the flute build...that was impressive. It's funny to see that foam floor...just last night I was looking at various flooring ideas for my tent and came to the conclusion those would be ideal. My only question is the durability of the tabs as far as frequent installing and uninstalling. As for price they are actually quite cheap....even competitive to carpet or rugs. It would be so nice to have a hot tent. I love those stoves. I'm not sure I would want to leave the tent though. Love you guys. Stay safe. :)

I bought a bell tent and a stainless steel stove for it. And I thought it would put out a lot of heat to get a red hot. But I realized that you have to have a lot more pipe in the stove than I have All my piping is on the outside. So the heat is not very good. That stuff you had was very interesting and I may have to look into that but I enjoy your show thank you. Steve
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 3 года назад
Of course I cannot say for sure without knowledge of your particular outfit and experience level but I would not be surprised if you would be fine once you learn to get the most out of your stove. You may need to split your wood fuel into smaller pieces rather than leave in rounds. You will get a much hotter fire that way. Of course you will also consume a greater volume of fuel. Also knowing how to use your tent can also enable a much warmer interior environment. Unfortunately here is not the best medium for dispensing all the info needed to get the most efficient performance out of a hot tent. It would require an entire book to effectively cover the subject.

Hey Lonnie, do you think it might help to have less cold draught by running a flexible extractor fan pipe from your tent vent right up to where the tent stove needs to draw the air? That really was luxury camping, they just need to make a shower tent extention and you could live for weeks in there!
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 3 года назад
The following is a copy and paste of a reply to another commenter. I do NOT want outside air directly routed to the stove air intake. I WANT the stove to get it's air from the tent interior. That air loss from the interior forces fresh air from outside to be sucked in and replace that consumed air thus providing a constant refreshing of the interior air. If there is any smoke that escapes from the stove in any way, I again WANT the stove to suck in that fouled air.

I have a barrel stove made from a barrel stove kit on a 30 gallon barrel and I loved that stove. It served me very well for many many years before finally rusting out winter before last. That 30 gallon barrel stove has a lot of mass to radiate heat. That was my canvas wall tent stove as well as my best large pyramid tent stove. Hi Lonnie & Connie, what make are your foldable chairs? They look comfy.
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 3 года назад
The chairs are two different makes. My chair is called "Ascend" and was purchased by me at I think a Bass Pro physical store. Connie's chair was purchased by me at a Wal-Mart physical store for less than 20 dollars and has teh brand name of "Ozark Trail". There are many many many different brand names on this style of chair with several slight variations in the leg/frame design. Both of our chairs have proven to be plenty good in quality. You can spend as much as over one hundred dollars for this style of chair but mine was purchased for in the 30's and Connie's less than 20. Wal-Mart's chairs are now more money last I looked. My chair has an aluminum frame and is noticeably lighter weight than Connie's steel frame but both have performed great. I find that they are both VERY comfortable to sit in for me. They are slightly difficult to get out of for me at my age due to the low height but still quite do-able. I really like these chairs as they are so compact and light weight for transport especially my aluminum frame chair.

I should have put the door on I suppose but decided to just forego it this time. We needed to zip the interior door each time anyway since we desired that thermal efficiency for this trip. Figured as long as we were going to unzip one door we might as well unzip both doors. Really no good reason why we did not do so other than we just didn't.

Nice video...thanks for sharing. Is RBM Outdoors, and Russian Bear Market, the same place. Is that where you got your tent and wood stove? I'm interested in getting the UP2 that should be big enough for two cots and two chairs for two people. What do you think?
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
My wife and I can get two full sized cots in the UP2 but just barely and they are a bit overlapped at the end. There is then room for one chair in between the cots but not two chairs. We did not feel like we had plenty of comfortable room for the two of us until we had the UP5. The UP2 is certainly big enough to sleep two people with the woodstove but it feels cramped. At least in the way that I look at it, the UP2 is a great size for one person and all the gear to make a comfortable camp. like a small table and a chair etc.
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
ps. Yes RBM Outdoors is Russian Bear Market and yes that is where I got my tents and stoves.

Ok, thank you so much for your reply and the valuable info you gave me. PS… that tip with the rope to assist with opening the tent was an awesomely good idea 👍 Thanks and take care.

Thanks for sharing your story. I can feel your pain. That is fantastic that you are seeking to do something about your physical condition and winning at it. That is really great. But how are you doing in an even more important aspect of your life. How are you doing spiritually? No need to answer that to me but is intended simply as food for personal thought. You physical life is extremely important but your spiritual life is even more important than that. If you haven't already seen it, I hope you will watch our video we did on how Connie and I experience peace in our lives. Good luck on building back an awesome life. I'm cheering for ya. How do you clean the dishes when you're out there in the bush?
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival
@Far-North-Bushcraft-Survival 3 года назад
I (Lonnie) typically just use straight hot water and paper towels and wipe the container out whether it is plates, bowls, pots or skillets. If a skillet has stuck food, using hot water I wipe out what I can and then place water in the skillet and heat hot for enough time to loosen the food and then repeat the scraping and wiping out. During the summer months and if a waterway is nearby, I use an abrasive "scrubby" to scrub out the vessel in the creek etc as the food particles will not hurt the aquatic life but I use no soap. Never allow soap to enter a waterway. If the vessels are greasy and do not come clean with cold water then I may use a hot water rinse and wipe just as in the winter.

Under gods eyes and lonnie and connie. Yep gosh i cant wait for more video's..more more. I would love to see them in warmer setting hunt kill clean and cook off the black flat rock again.
