Alaskan Town That Lives In One Building (Isolated From The World)

Hello everyone, Ruhi Çenet here. Imagine the building you live in is not just your home but it is also your entire city. In this building, all the essential needs you can think of are gathered under one roof. People go to the grocery store, the post office, or even the notary in a heartbeat by just taking an elevator ride. Despite the storm outside and the giant snowbanks, the kids living here get to school through the underground tunnel in their building.
Located in the south of Alaska, Whittier, is a coastal city hidden between towering mountains and the ocean. With an area of approximately 51 square kilometers or 20 square miles, it has only one residential complex for its entire population.

I visited Whittier in August 2001. My girlfriend at that time was good friends with a couple that lived in that building. Their apartment overlooked the shipping docks and railway. @@i-eat-you The majority of the land is owned by the Alaska Railroad and the City. Very little private property for development. As a result, housing is mostly in the form of a couple of condominiums and a smattering of small framed cabins on private lots. The property tax base is buoyed up by the fees generated by the City harbor. There is also a private “condo harbor” and a new commercial dock/harbor/commercial project under way at this time. Again, all commercial development. Typical seasonal summer destination town for those who have boats….very quiet in the winter.

The minimal carbon emissions and the absence of daily commutes make it even more appealing. Imagine the amount of time saved and the increased productivity that can be achieved in such a setup. It's a dream come true for work-life balance enthusiasts. I genuinely hope that someday everyone gets to experience living in a place like this because it's truly the best, especially for families. As an introvert myself I do hope for this reason as well as others the comment was deep sarcasm or a bot. Here's my version. Wouldn't it be amazing for the environment and social benefits if we all lived in community pods where we all shared belongings isolated from the environment and where our wastes were recycled to meet all our food needs. And it would save so much time wasted preparing food if there could be just a waste processing tube that injected needed nutrients just connected from our anus direct to our stomach. Just think of the reduced carbon and work life balance! 😅 But of course I'm taking it to the extremes of this type of thinking. The people in this community seem lovely and if it makes them or the commentator above happy they should be free to voluntarily choose living as they wish. It's not for everyone and people should remain free to live in the ways that works for them. One person's heaven can be another's hell. I recently saw the planned city in the desert called The Line and that looks like a planned dystopia to me but I guess some people want to live there. Again as long as it's just one type of voluntary option. On a creepy aside, the ad I got with this video was for bespoke underground luxury bunkers for rich people to ride out the apocalypse in style and opulence.

It's nice to see that this building is in such good condition. I've visited Adak Island twice; Once in the early 1990s when Adak was still a nuclear submarine base. I returned in 2010, and I was shocked at the differences. There's a big building that I'm certain was the enlisted quarters, and in the bottom floors there a huge swimming pool, and a theater. Most septic tanks are in better condition, and the theater wasn't any better. Smashed EVERYTHING made me sick. The strange thing was, everything else is in great condition. There's a typical McDonald's (theletters are all gone, and the sun bleached eveything around the name on its side) This is a really cool video, it tugs at my heart string for my home away from home.

I've researched a lot about Whittier. Thank you for doing a video on it. What I have learned is most of the People are very content there. Basically this is no different than a Rancher in the lower 48 having 1,000 acres totally cut off from civilization. I think if you are comfortable being away from Society you are comfortable with yourself. The issue I have is if you are unhealthy or have a serious disease and there is a dire emergency, you are pretty much screwed, unless they have a helicopter get you to Anchorage.I wondered as well what if a Pregnant women has an emergency. It takes a special breed to live there, and I think they like being cut off from the World. I wouldn't mind going to see it.

A friend of mine and I walked from Whittier through what is now the Anton-Anderson tunnel back when it was just for trains in the summer of 1970 when I was 16. We took the train from Anchorage but after a couple of days camping outside of Whittier in the rain (after checking out the recently "off limits" Buckner Bldg.) got bored and since the train wasn't due back for a few more days, we just ignored the big warning sign (NO ENTRY!) and plunged into the darkness of the 2.5 tunnel. About halfway through, we both heard an ominous rumble on the tracks and thought, "Omigod, we're gonna get run over by a train and what's one doing coming down the line anyway since it's not due for two more days?" After jumping off the berm into what was thankfully only waist-high frigid pools of water on either side, we stood there freezing and then saw the light coming closer and closer while the tracks were still vibrating. Well, I almost had to laugh when the light came past us and we discovered it was a lantern hanging from a t-bar attached to one of those old pump hand-cars that I thought only existed in cartoons and silent movies! I could have reached up and grabbed the operator's ankles, but thought better of it and no doubt saved him five brown pounds! When we finally got to the other side, we rested by the entrance and then watched a salmon run in the Portage River where probably two dozen HUGE Alaskan brown bears were devastating a choked river that was completely silver until the bears appeared and then was blood red after their banquet. We then walked the rest of the way to the Seward Highway and hitchhiked back to Anchorage. Certainly the most interesting and visual episode of my three years in Alaska and I've actually talked to two other old army vets who told me that they walked through that same tunnel in the late 40's and 50's! I guess I channel that experience every time I see the train scene in "Stand By Me."

Wow thank you for sharing, your words painted pictures in my mind like some nostalgic, vintage film (and imagining snowy environments like this in general evoke that sense of nostalgic peace for me for some reason, despite having no such experiences). I want to have my own memories like this through being able to travel, meet people and have new experiences, but this economy has destroyed all capability of travel and overall fulfillment in life for me. So being able to hear about other people's experiences is healing. Invaluable stores like that get lost to time without being shared. Mundane but warm stories like these are truly a showcase of the human condition and what it means to just...live. In our brief time here on this earth, in those little glimmers of moments, just making those little memories. Just like the soldiers before you that passed through some time in the past..just little echoes of human souls passing through in the same space, connected by our shared experiences. We pass through like spirits and many more come before and after us. Our lives may be fleeting but it's in those little experiences, and those type of locations (like the town and tunnel) that people live on. The experiences and memories collectively people have had add to the 'history', and the soul and 'personality,' of a place that you can just FEEL whenever you visit any location like this with such rich history and stories. It may have been just some normal memory to some, but there's just something so profound and beautiful in such a simple memory to me. Really appreciate you sharing.
