“Alberni by Kengo Kuma” is a remarkable architectural project designed by the renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. Located in Vancouver, BC, this 43-story residential tower is a testament to Kuma’s vision of integrating natural elements with urban living. The building’s design is characterized by its organic form, featuring two “scoops” that carve out deep balconies furnished in wood, creating a dynamic silhouette that changes when viewed from different angles.
The tower’s connection to its environment is evident in its use of natural materials and its relationship with the street and views. The lower portions of the carvings help to counterbalance the volume above, giving the structure a sense of harmony and balance. At ground level, intersecting domes welcome visitors into an expansive moss garden, leading up to a swimming pool, emphasizing a serene atmosphere over a singular focal point.
Inside, the commitment to craftsmanship and detail is clear, with intricate woodwork throughout the building. The amenities include a Kengo Kuma-designed Fazioli piano, a moss garden, a swimming pool, and a contemporary Japanese restaurant concept inspired by the art form of Kaiseki. This project not only offers a unique living experience but also contributes to the architectural redefinition of Alberni Street, enhancing its status as one of Canada’s premier locations.
