Got married in a castle in Salzburg Austria and went to a hotel looking for some place to have dinner...I asked the waitress if she could dedicate a song to us...it was an all German Band, men wearing Lederhosen and women dressed in traditional dresses..I thought they would play a nice German song.....they came on stage and dedicated this song and sang it perfect...my wife died at 47 years old but i will never forget that night RIP Terry
RU-vid is our modern-day version of a Time Machine; it helps us all go back into time and relive the memories we all miss so much; I just love this song. Thank you RU-vid.
1972 when this song was released . Thirteen years old. It'd seems like Yesterday yo me. Nevertheless was 50 years ago!!!!!. Great song! Great remembrances of my youth.
I was 16. This music took my breath away then, always has, and still does. It will stand the test of time. (My daughter is 20, discovered this song on her own, and loves it.)
Only those raised elsewhere, that later resided in California (both back then, and also recently, to now) can "relate." I left for GOOD, recently. Timelessly, Apropos song!
Surprised how many people listen to the song and think it's about rain when in fact it has nothing to do with rain at all. Great lyrics so many of us can relate. The best 70s
Our cleaner at work just casually mentioned one day that a friend of his had a gym in his house. Quick investigation and it transpires that his friend was Albert Hammond. He even had the pics to back it up. Said he's a lovely guy.
I can honestly believe he is a lovely guy....he interacts so naturally with his audiences...I saw him live in 1975 and he was so natural...almost humble, but with a great empathy with his audience. He is so successful and talented, yet never clamours for the limelight. Albert Hammond, thankyou from the bottom of my heart, for the decades of joy your music has brought me and millions of your fans worldwide. God bless you. We love you. ❤❤
The 70s music will put you on another planet that no one will understand unless you have a love of the 70s music. You don't need drugs or alcohol to appreciate the best music ever. God....take me back to the 70s and leave me there....I'll be just fine.
One of the great American songs of all time. A song that's loved and cherished all over the world. When I was stationed in Heidelberg Germany I remember hearing a lovely German waitress singing this in the booth next to me while she took her break. It was such a poignant moment because she had no idea that was my favorite. I could not help but tear up, then and now as I remember it..
@@mikejohn0088 cause you're too old and your mind has broken down and IF you read my comment then you will see all ages UP TO 90 you're over the hill pops
I guess we are all listening to this great music in the year 2020 what's so many problems in this earth we have to go back in music to make us feel better
ME,! I’m 70 years old actually, those amazing sixties were the best years for music and everything was nice and easy, I still hear those beautiful love songs!! The sixties were the best music,!
I wasn't born is California but worked there as an adult for 35 years. I lost my job and had to live back east for 6 years. The whole time back there all I could think was to come back to Southern California. I did last year. This song was one of the reasons.
What's more is that this song has a story people can relate to. The narrator goes to California with all the hopes and dreams of making it big mainly due to stories he has been led to believe. However, once he is there, he finds that California was not at all what he imagined. Hence, he leaves disappointed and disillusioned.
Love this one , and it pours in England too ! Please don’t tell em how you found me - give me a break , give me a break ! How many people want this ? 🥊🤷♀💥😡😱
I get chills everytime I listen to this song never will get tired of it so glad I was a teen in the seventies what a shame does not sound like this in 2022
There is some good stuff out there, but it doesn't just pour out of your average radio anymore. You really have to look in back alleys of the internap.
Years ago, I graduated from the great University of Michigan. To celebrate, I decided to drive out to California from my home in Detroit. The first day, I reached St. Louis . I had never seen it rain so hard. I thought I wanted to go home. But, I continued on with my trip and it turned out to be maybe the best trip of my life.
"Brings back sweet memories" -- really? did you read the lyrics past the chorus? It's not a 'happy song', far from it... "Out of self respect, I'm out of bread I'm underloved, I'm underfed I wanna go home" "Will you tell the folks back home I nearly made it?... Please don't tell 'em how you found me Don't tell 'em how you found me Gimme a break"
@@mambi74 thanks for your comments. Sweet memories, I mean a time when I was a kid, where my father used to play this song. I am not referring to the lyric but the tune and nostalgia of the 60s 70s era.
@Matias_V , For many people including myself, the song brings back memories of hearing it when I was a kid and the music is happy sounding. However, I totally agree with you. When you listen to the lyrics, you find they are not happy at all. The narrator goes to California with high hopes and dreams of making it big only to find out it was not what he imagined. Therefore, he is homesick and wants to go home to his hometown.
Got on board a westbound seven forty-seven Didn't think before deciding what to do Oh, that talk of opportunities, TV breaks and movies Rang true, sure rang true Seems it never rains in southern California Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before It never rains in California, but girl, don't they warn ya? My teen daughter asked why so many old songs are about California. I told her California has not always been a dump. Not too long ago it was a dream for people all over the world to live there.
The first time I heard this song, I was at my Dad's friend's ranch.. they had an Oldsmobile station wagon that had many windows in it and on the roof. I just remember driving out to some ranch where I rode a horse for the first time. On the way back home we were in my Dad's 65 GTO, and it was the Hollies playing a Long cool woman in a black dress. RIP Dad, I miss you and all the wonderful times and adventures you gave us kids.
We're the best ever sad how the years have changed but they were great old days when we could all meet in the disco and just dance sing with the music happy days again
I wasn't even 10 years old when this song came out. I found it middle-of-the-road like so many other songs at the time As I got older I learned to appreciate it. Now that I'm old, I'm glad I have lived long enough to love this song
Lived in San Diego 1974-76, song brings back a lot of memories,I was 22 years old, when you are young everything seems new and exicting, this song takes me back like being in a time machine, the world has always been messed up but 50 years ago it sure seemed like a better place than what it is now.
It’s still a great place! People said that in the 70s remember? People said exactly what you just said in the 70s think about it I remember people saying oh the world‘s gone to pot the banks are gonna crash. The president is terrible everything that’s happening now was happening then, the great stuff and the bad stuff. There is nothing under the sun.❤
"Nunca llueve al sur de California" Recordar es volver a vivir, tiempos que no volverán, gracias a Dios viví la mejor época de la música, los 70s, esa meliodía me trae grandes recuerdos de mi juventud, gracias por compartirla. Saludos desde Costa Rica.
Folks, as I'm sitting here watching this, I can't help but wonder if today's kids will ever look back with nostalgia on the music they're growing up with
Many years ago I walked into a bar in San Francisco singing this song, after escaping from the torrential rain outside, hoping to impress/make the barmaid laugh. She wasn't at all impressed and told me very clearly that SF wasn't in southern California, I just had a beer.
He is from my home town of Gibraltar and btw we are bi-lingual ie we can speak and think in this case in english and spanish. Plus his parents and my parents knew each other going back to WW2

When I heard this song as a kid, I always wish to move there as it never rains in Southern California. A timeless classic. Love it. Brings back such good innocent memories.
This song was jointly composed by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazelwood . It was released in 1972 and initially received lukewarm but as time passed it became a classic California living song .
I remember singing along this lyric when I was 13 years old and I didn’t even spoke English but I sure took the effort to pronounce each word as close as I could. Love this song !!!!!
And it truly never rains there because it gets piped in from other states. As the pulitizer prize winning book showed. That is why the book was titled Cadillac desert, the capital is on Sacramento , and the federal reserve bank is in San Francisco.
My friend sofia i love this song to went i heard it again in 1971 went i came back to canada from the netherlands i could not speak that much of english because i lived in the netherlands for 1 yr with family on my father side of the family because i got into trouble with my second stepfather too
This song always tried to make me cry, because I felt that way many times as inmigrant really far away from home, from Costa Rica 🇨🇷 what a great song 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I remember this song confusing me a bit when I was a little kid, especially on the rainy nights in Southern California. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley in the 70's. Lots of good memories both in and out of the rain.
MsBb, Hello. It was confusing to me back in the 70's as well. When I now hear the lyrics though, I'm thinking (although I could be wrong) that Albert meant it metaphorically - written from a place of pain/heartache; perhaps after having experienced hardship trying to make it as a star then; e.g., "I'm out of self respect, I'm out of bread. I'm under loved, I'm under fed. I wanna go home!"...and then the [suspected] metaphor, "It never rains in California, but girl - don't they warn you? It pours. Man, it pours." Just a thought from this 70's guy. Take care.
I was 12 years old...when I heard this beautiful song for the first time. It impacted me...that it has rained a lot in Southern California... this year ! , which means that since the 70s through the present time, there has been a significant change in the weather. However, I love this song, because it takes me back to those magical years when I believed, the world was better than it is today ! Thanks Mr. Albert Hammond for this BEAUTIFUL song !!!
A beautiful song , song by a great singer with a stunning voice just lovey I’m so please at 74 I can appreciate such things just great to go to sleep with music and lyrics like these in my head and heart I hope you find the truth some day soon regards Mike sol’s
Haven't heard this for a long long time. Oh, how it reminds me of my youth growing up in Southern California. It was so much different back then, so much different. Gonna be 60 in a couple years...God I miss those days. At my age, you do a lot of harking back, especially considering the state of the world right now.
1972: Hammond, with co-writer Mike Hazelwood, wrote a number of hits for various artists in the 70's and 80's. The Hollies "The Air that I Breathe" was likely the biggest. But this one Hammond did himself and hit #5 with it.
Our music teacher would come to our school once a month, or so. She would bring her guitar, and we kids would all sing. I still remember singing this song. It was probably 5th grade, or so.
Thank you for your kindness yes i do play well you may think that is old music but it is the best thing you ever Heard you probably have the same person who loves the taste of what was there but it is still available and thank You for excepting my own music
When this song was popular and playing on Boston radio, I was a graduate student in a well known Cambridge, Massachusetts university. I was married, my wife and I had a little boy of about two years old. I was working part time (sometimes two jobs) and carrying a full academic program, and it was extremely difficult to make ends meet. Scholarships and loans did not cover personal living expenses. I had to pull out and accept the Master's degree with the anticipation of getting a full time job after graduation, stabilizing our financial situation, and returning for the doctorate. It never happened. I had to give priority to my family over my academic pursuits. The phrase in this song: "Will you tell the folks back home, I nearly made it?" always put a lump in my throat back then, and it still reminds me of a goal that I was not able to achieve.
@@johnmcnally5307 We lived in Brighton, down the street from St. Elizabeth's Hospital and Boston College. During slippery snowy weather, we could just sit on the front steps of the building and watch cars slide down towards Washington Street, if the drivers wouldn't slow down beforehand.
Growing up in the Pacific Northwest. Especially Portland, Or. It rains, and rains, and pours and rains some more. We just played through it, getting soaking wet, and freezing, but loving every free moment of my life... Today, you can't walk in Portland, one of the towns of shite...
I love this song. Also after I posted below, Calif has been slammed hard with snow in 2023, even in southern California. I grew up in San Joaquin Valley & these videos of the dams & water was how it was then. Flooding was a concern some years. Sad the drought now!
Mine also Lived in Kodialk Alaska as a kid in the 70s I was out side with my Brother and sisters all, the time playing In the woods making forts with rotten logs Or in the snow making snow forts and snow ball fights Had great friends LIVED by a very pretty lake, Island lake in Kodiak Alaska on RU-vid , The music from the 70s WAS FANTASTIC
This was back at a time when Sothern California was a great place to live. Fast forward 50 years. I'll never go back, except to visit. They ruined it, they just ruined it...! Oh well, nothing lasts forever. Should rather be used to it by now. Terrific song though. I was just listening to the Gilbert O'Sullivan song "Alone Again". Such a sad song, never really heard the lyrics. I used to think it was a little melancholy. Just listening to it and reading the words, it was so sad.
I wouldnt trade growing up in the 70's for anything. Was a great time to be a kid.

the song my very early youth, in Poland during the times of socialism you could not play this song on the radio, there was censorship, so our boys played it on our guitar in the 70's
