You are 100% right on the money dovac6490. I had the pleasure of meeting Albert Lee on 2 separate occasions. The 1st time was a quick hand shake n we talked for maybe 10 minutes. Then 3 or 4 years later I was at the NAMM convention in Anaheim, California and I was lucky enough to hang out with him & talk for close to an hour & he remembered me (WTF? really). I thanked him for the starlicks video that he made that I learned so much from years ago. Then I said Albert the video starts & there you are with your leg goin up n down and you are chicken pickin your ass off (True story) he laughed out loud and said thanks. I went on to say that after the intro, when you started talking I literally fell out of my chair & my guitar & I were now on the floor. I did this impersonation of him with one eye straight & the other crossed eyed and said with an English accent "Hello I'm Albert Lee" praying to god I didn't offend him but he laughed so hard I'll never forget it. I said to him "You are hands down the best chickin pickin country guitarist I've ever heard so of course I was expecting a heavy country accent & I had no idea you were from England. He said Yes, I know I used to hear that a lot back then. We talked for almost an hour after that & you said it he was the most humble real deal professional you will ever meet & a very cool guy with a great sense of humor. Sorry for the long reply but I had to share this

World's greatest country guitarist - world's worst teacher ;-) I can listen to this genius play for hours on end but like many other greats, it's not much use trying to learn their style by listening to them speak - they really can't be bothered to describe what they do in any useful detail ;-) Many hours watching, listening, transcribing and (of course) practising are the only things that have allowed me to learn a small fraction of what this wonderful guy does. That solo on 'Let it Be Me' brings a lump to my throat every time I hear it. - Thanks for posting.

I think they just don't really know how to explain what they do, as they spent years trying to get it into the sub-conscious where they don't need to think but it just comes out almost on its own.

My Buddy played rhythm guitar way way back in 59 with Albert. He died about 5 years ago and they played let it be me at his funeral .A nice touch.

John How interesting - what's your buddy's name? I'm a couple of years younger than Albert but from the same part of London where he was at the time so I might just know your buddy.

For what it’s worth, these types of things he’s playing are just flat-out not gonna be possible to PLAY for beginners or even really intermediate players. And by PLAY, I mean understand what you’re playing, not just copying note for note. This video is unbelievably useful for understanding albert’s thought processes, and how he chooses what to play. Specifically the section with the host playing a single G chord at a slow tempo-you can analyze how Albert chooses where to go next, analyze how he makes his runs up and down the fretboard, stuff like that. It’s pretty interesting stuff, but providing this stuff as beginner or intermediate material is just not really accurate. These guys play, they don’t teach. And they come from a different era where they didn’t have anything like these videos, they’ve got little to no clue how to explain a lot of the stuff they’re doing.

I don’t understand how the interviewer dares to say that Albert’s technique is “ rudimentary “ ??? Wtf?? He could never even play half the quality and speed it takes to play like Albert. Amazing musician of all times.
@patrickmccutcheon8860
@patrickmccutcheon8860 3 года назад
Because it doesn’t have a lot of key changes and tempo switches, people are quick to call something rudimentary. But they fail to take into account nuance and feeling, and the skill it takes to play those phrases.

I think he meant rudimentary in a technical way, as in the chord changes and technique, but he did mention the blazing speed and efficiency of alberts playing. Why get so offended?
@CalebePriester
@CalebePriester Год назад
Dude, The guy was not being disrespectful. A piano player can play that chord idea very easily, it is a rudimentary technique. Albert is a guitar god, obviously. The guitar is a complicated instrument because of the picking, some ideas are harder to apply on the guitar than on other instruments.

@ArkyMalarkey
@ArkyMalarkey Год назад
I disagree. The interviewer was more or less forced into drawing useful information from Albert, whose didactic skills are - how shall I put it - slightly less spectacular than his picking prowess. This is often the case with exceptional musicians who needed no more than raw talent to get where they got. There are of course exceptions to the rule: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rqqbFmgOFHs.html but then, Danny was and always will be the greatest guitarist of all time.
