Every now and again if I'm feeling a bit low or tired or whatever, I return to this clip and it always puts a smile on my face. As Dave said in the clip, "to hear that man play the way he does is a joy." Pure and simple :o)
It’s more than just his technical ability, it’s something about the man himself. His love for the guitar, for his music… zen or something. People love this man.
Albert Lee is a fantastic guitarist! I've seen him live four times, and chatted to him a few times. I first heard of him during a Dave Edmunds TV documentary. He had been called in to play the solo in 'Sweet Little Lisa', and boy did he play that guitar! You just have to see the expressions on the faces of the other musicians to appreciate his incredible skill and tone.
So funny to see Nick Lowe at the end, destroyed and trying to think of what to say. Hilarious. God bless everything you want but make sure that you mention Albert Lee.
Whenever I feel like watching pure unadulterated beautiful guitar playing….oozing with taste, elegance, pizazz, musicality, clicheless licks….I go and watch this clip…had the pleasure years ago watching and shaking hands with the man in a teeny weeny club in my hometown…..he is just as kind as he is a mindboggling player…..
Great to have this little insight in Albert's studio routine. He just walks in and before he even takes out his jacket he has already mount a flawless guitar track and drinks his closing-time-beer.
Yup. Brilliant. Thanks for posting. Albert talked about this session at one of his clinics. He said that when he heard the record, he was surprised how high Dave put him in the mix, and added: "He must have liked it."
A mate played this to me in 1983 on vinyl. He didn't have to try too hard to "sell" it to me. Like he said, both Dave and Albert are really REALLY going for it, to the extent that they're playing ahead of the beat they're shredding that fast. I eventually got it on CD a few years ago. So pleased to see this footage was made in the studio at the time - a historical document!
I've just watched this 10 times and sent it to my gf. The guys faces in the studio say it all...and Phil Linot. 10/10. You've obviously read my pamphlet on guitar playing. 🎸
Lee, Lewis, Lowe, Lynott, Edmunds - wow...that's a room with heavy talent! Albert's one in a million, and Nick Lowe's "pamphlet" comment is hilarious. Albert, as usual, seems awfully humble and not big-headed about his talent at all!
No comparing any one because music is music. Albert Lee is my Fav but when any one plays from their heart it's worth taking a listen to that and appreciating. Heart track
this has always been one of my favorite guitars solo's ever. i never dreamed i would be able to see it being recorded.thanks gmailvsi. and to see Huey Lewis, Phil Lynott, Nick Lowe & Dave Edmunds all watching from the control room is just priceless.i love when nick holds his head in his hands, blown away, but then say's "You've obviously read my pamphlet on how to play guitar".
This is one of my all time favourite songs - Dave Edmunds and Albert Lee together. The second time I saw Albert Lee solo he opened with this song a few years back. Honestly I have listened to this song thousands of times. I can't believe I have seen this footage!
It fries my brain to discover that there is studio footage of one of my favorite albums and songs of all time! Please tell me there's more of this out there!
This was my introduction to Albert Lee thanks to Dave Edmunds of whom I was a fan. Saw Rockpile at the Decorum Hemel Hempstead and some year later Albert at Wavendon Stables. Had a chat with him and what a lovely humble man. I mentioned Tommy Emmanuel to him and he said HE'S a great guitarist. I said your not so bad yourself Albert. Thank you Dave.
I bet there are none to match his skills. He is the guru for most of the top stars today even For Vince Gill. Love the way dave says he would be loved to be born Albert Lee in his next life. And mind you this is recorded 50 years ago. He was just 20 then now he's about 73 if I'm right
Sweet joy - having been taken off the Tube for a while, I can't tell you how great it is to see this back. For all those doubting johnnies who think Albert's just a country picker this should ram it firmly, but politely up your nostrils!
Dave is toasty here ;-) Albert was mash of Jimmy Bryant, James Burton, Hank Garland... loads of American pickers. He did do his own thing for sure... love Albert.
How can a simple from-the-scratch-comping (he doesn't even bother to take off his jacket) sound so incredibly groovy?! Listen to the passage starting at 1:16
Little birdie told me that Dave Edmunds and Huey Lewis will be in Albert's upcoming 70th birthday documentary! There's a whole load of musicians involved in the project. Search for Albert Lee on Google and check out his official site.
I met Albert at an Irish club-around mid 80's in B'rum-UK..for first time, & live, he was an absolute joy to hear & watch & even started his set, Singing & playing this very song. I had my HB'lad as guest photog, stage front- & got some great shots-he looked same then, as Vid above..+ shiny curly black hair.. A truly Charming & humble guy.My Opinion is based on fact, I had travelled extensively-& was even in Hamburg 'Top Ten' on Reeperbahn, from 1961 onwards -Kaiser Kellar' Grosse Freiheit St, Star Club-.Beatles & all that !! & 1970's a session gtr, on a doz' cruise ships, all over the Med' & the Carribean-constantly in touch with everything on air, so I reckoned I knew all about Gtr players. I think this Vid was about 10 years before I saw him,so 1976-8 ish, I reckon nobody in the world at that time could have sat in on this Dave E..studio session & done a better job.(with the exception of Clarence White 'Buckaroo' )Albert's Top Class Man, in every respect.
One has to say that talent Like Albert's and yours Gaz; aint that common. You've probably seen this before, but I loved Dave Edmunds and "Rockpile" in the late 70's early 80's. He say's in this clip that "he wishes that he could come back as Albert Lee".
I had the pleasure to record with albert lee in 2004...we did my album "in the hills" at mill hill studios...it was so fun as we sat and recorded the tracks first take and live..unforgetable,i also had the pleasure that boz boorer was there to produce.Love dave too...nearest ive been is recording with John david...hes ex love sculpture/dave edmunds...rock n roll lives;))
I can't stop watching and listening to this. I can remember hearing it on Roger Scott show on Capitol Radio (afternoon housewife's and factory worker's slot) when it was first released in '78 or '79. He must have risked the wrath of God for playing it so many times. Albert's guitar work blew my socks into orbit - still does. So rewarding to see how it was put together and to see Edmunds, Fairweather-Lowe, Phil Lynott and others watch in awe. Thanks gmailvsl (whoever you may be).
From "Born Fighter" an amazing documentary about the recording of Sweet Little Lisa and other tracks that would go on both Edmunds and Lowe solo records. I think Edmunds- a guy who's used to being the hot shot- is completely freaked out by Albert's prowess. His expressions at 3:37 will show. And yes- Huey Lewis and Phil Lynott hanging out in the control room. Lowe- "Listen, you've obviously read my pamphlet on these tracks...."
A little venue in Toronto - Hugh's Room - I've been going there for 20 years. Last summer's Albert Lee gig (with Cindy Cashdollar) was THE BEST gig I've ever seen there. Please come back, Albert!
+Madeleine Hague Saw him last summer with Cindy at the Markham Jazz Festival, and was lucky enough to get a fist bump (he didn't want to shake hands before playing) and a photo with him. I'm surprised I was able to get the words, "Permission to shake the hand of one of my all time musical heroes?" out of my mouth, I was so starstruck. Spoke a little more relaxed after the show, and asked him how Dave was doing. He said he'd last seen him at his 70th birthday party. A quiet, humble guy with a boyish smile. What a treat. I'll remember that night forever.
Loved how he just blew the rest of the guys so totally away with his amazing, out of this world playing there. I bet it was a first take, improvised and just perfect for the song. He is really one of a kind!👍😊
Well it was recorded a long time ago. Brad Paisley would have been a twinkle in his dad's eye and Dave Edmunds is a great guitar player as well in my opinion. Thanks for posting gmailvs one of my favourites on youtube - maybe it's because I was a teenager just a bit younger than them great guys when they were having hits.
Great licks, listen to the final version on Dave Edmunds album it is fantastic. Also if you like other videos of Alert try Carlene Carter “I Fell in Love” Albert plays lead and you will see him playing a very different guitar.
Albert said to me at gig when talking about Tommy Emmanuel he said now "HE is a great guitarist". Your not so bad yourself Albert!! Bloody brilliant with the Rythym Kings.
I am sorry if I misrepresented, but Lee began his pro work at the end of the 50's with an R & B band. Burton was playing with the Louisiana Hayride at 13 and then from there he ended up in LA as a session guitarist and was hired by Rickey Nelson in the mid 50's with Ozzie and Harriet. By the time Albert was playing with Head Hands, and Feet he was already a blistering guitar player.
Effing hell! It ain’t normal the way he playes that guitar!!! He was playing with Buddy Holly’s Crickets at this time! Check out ‘ long way from Lubbock’ by the Crickets! Absolutely brilliant and sold about 10 copies! No justice in this life👌👌👌
Well, let me make myself clear. He was only a god, because he literally played for thousands upon thousands of hours and obviously possessed a natural gift for music. He didn't wake up one day, and discover he was maybe the most innovative guitarist on the planet. He worked for it, and put the time in. But, in the end, to the naked eye, he was a god!
Dave, Nick and the others just looked completely awestruck as that was happening. Nuff said. Prefer Albert with a Tele. Great video, captured somethin special here
