Nice! I was just down the road from you on the same reservoir the last 3 weekends. Lots of crayfish in that reservoir! I tried night catching with head lamp and bbq tongs for the first time, that is by far the most productive way I have found so far! I have a freezer in my trailer that I freeze them on site so I can transport lots at a time. If you don't have a freezer, boiling on shore then transporting on ice is a good way too. No spoilage.
Hi Alistair, could you pls share me the GPS location of where you went for the crayfish? I came to littlebow once and couldn't find the spot, attempting to go once again before winter comes.
Nice job! I put my traps just past the rocks close by where you are back in early March. Of course I had to cut a few overlapping holes so I could get my trap through the ice, and it was weedy on the bottom. I did attract quite a lot of crayfish, but only about 8 got in the trap overnight. I actually caught about just as much just on a line with bait at the time over the course of a few hours.
Everything I read says you need to boil crawfish live ...and not to cook already dead ones because of a bacteria that can grow quick after they die ?? Any truth to this
All shellfish should be eaten immediately after they as bacteria grows rapidly and would produce toxins that make you sick. You could kill them and boil them and then put on ice for a few days or kill them put on ice and cook within 24 hours. I guess some say you could freeze them right away assuming you have a freezer with you that's probably the best alternative to eating them right away.
why do you kill them all there? they would keep fresh longer if you just transported them to your house alive. in louisiana they carry big 50pound mesh bag of them while they are alive.
Thanks for watching! For kids: Airdrie pond and connecting creek (nose creek) is the best place to catch them. Nose creek park near Harvest hill blvd area is good.
