Alberta wildfires: Flames engulfing Jasper town up to 100m high, officials say | FULL

Providing an update Thursday on the wildfire burning near and in Jasper, Alta., Premier Danielle Smith appeared visibly shaken, as she provided remarks on the "out of control" fire engulfing the town.
“We have all seen on the news and social media the horrific pictures and videos coming out of Jasper. Homes and businesses have been lost to a wildfire that people are calling a ‘wall of flames.’ There is no denying that this is the worst nightmare for any community… Jasper we will continue to stand by you,” Smith said.
“Wind gust(s) moved that fire five kilometers in, probably less than 30 minutes with a wall of fire that was about 100m high. I think people need to picture what those wildfire folks were experiencing at that time. Any firefighter will tell you there's little to nothing you can do when you have a wall of flames coming in like that. Kudos to those folks that were the heroes that stood their ground in order to fight that fire,” said Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis.

And you learned nothing from Fort Mac, made cuts to Alberta Wildland Fire, and do not proactively work on providing safe buffers around towns and cities. A predicable outcome, even the forestry industry reached out to help immediately beforehand to make buffers, and those offers were ignored or downright denied. Hopefully there is an inquiry after the fact.

The Alberta NDP government started this mess when they made cuts to wildfire management during their tenure. In 2015, they reduced the wildfire management budget by $15 million, which affected various aspects of wildfire response, including personnel and equipment. This reduction came despite warnings of an extremely dry and hot summer, which heightened wildfire risks.

@@johnnysteez5124 and what improvements has the UCP made to any government program in the years since they were elected… right, they don’t like public services… there should be an inquiry to all of the parties involved, Parks Canada, the Provincial Government of Alberta and town of Jasper. So, why was a fire break not created weeks ago.? Why was the feds offer for help not accepted a week ago? Why was Fort Mac tragedy not a lesson learned? This is old growth forest. Goes up like a torch. Maybe if all those things had been done, a 200 ft wall of fire would have breached perimeters anyway, but will never know now… To the people of Jasper, we cry with you, to the people of Canada, we grieve the losses. Every year lately have been the hottest years on records, not only here but around the world. Undergrowth dries more deeply under the forest canopies meaning more rain and snowpack is needed to restore the natural balance of forest life. Trees are starving for water and we must add that our long heat waves dry out the upper branches quickly, making the spread of fire swift and unstoppable. For the most part we’re in a new era that isn’t likely to change because of climate change. It’s time to cut back the forests around all communities. People will say that it looks ugly to do that.

Budget 2024 highlights the increase in aerial firefighting capabilities, including securing two extra long-term helicopter contracts, two new air tanker contracts, and more drones for wildfire surveillance. No lives were lost so far, but peoples houses can be replaced etc and I don’t think the wildlife can say the same, it will take years for wildlife to make a comeback and whatever animals that made it will disperse to different locations so don’t be surprised when grizzlies and elk and moose and many more species show up in less likely places, I think it’s a good idea for companies in the car industry to start placing ashtrays back into vehicles seeing that people are flicking butt’s out and possibly causing some of these fires, people can be very materialistic and I’m not surprised that media and people would rather talk about million and billion dollar mansions and properties being destroyed by fires vs the abundant wildlife that has been burned alive and destroyed, it’s sad for sure but my heart goes out to the wildlife that had no way of evacuating and no escape etc, great job to the firefighters risking their lives to save our beautiful land and wildlife and people and let’s pray for their safety.

Either or 67% of fires in Alberta are started by human lack of of respect for the forest that give all people joy, except for those that intently start these fires either accidentally or on purpose!!! Loss of wildlife is never mentioned you can believe it is extensive!!!! What a waste!!!!

Our thoughts and prayers are with all . A tragic, catastrophic event. We agree with the sentiments expressed by the Premier and other State Officials. We experienced an amazing, wonderful year in Alberta and absolutely loved Jasper. It is heart -breaking to see what has happened. But we know that the spirit and courage of Albertans will not falter and in time Jasper will rise from this inferno and be restored to a new and glorious future.😢😢😢😢

Premier Danielle smith is responsible for cutting funding for wild fire prevention . It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see the how ridiculously hot & dry it is in North America we haven’t seen a drop of rain in a month on the south coast. This is unheard of up until the last 4 years which the temps have shot up & remain 10C and higher above seasonal averages for weeks at a time . Our autumn was like summer a couple years ago. I’ve worked outdoors my entire life . We’d get maybe 5 days of sunshine then cool off and rain for a couple and repeat . Never anything like this up until 2020 ish . Climate change is real we’ve lost countless towns as a result including the best one of them all Jasper a national icon . I’ve spent many months there the people are fantastic it’s natural beauty is unmatched ! I’m heartbroken for those who reside in Jasper & have come from all over the world to work there during peak season . I got engaged in Jasper. My best memories are of Jasper National Park. This woman needs to resign she should be ashamed of herself ! Then calling on the federal government for help when you wouldn’t do it yourself ! You had all the warnings & close calls . No you’d rather take in oilers games in the most expensive seats in the house smh. Despicable !

This is NOT pointed at the residents. When are we as a society going to make a conscious decision that either we want all the pretty trees around our towns and we are going to accept the loss of one of them every few years, or that we are going to say "sorry environmentalists and residents, we are cutting 2km firebreaks around each potentially affected town"

All of you guys that are losing your homes in suffering due to this fire I ask the Lord Jesus Christ to help you to get through an endure whatever it is you must deal with I pray that he will make a way for all of you to succeed and not have to go without those of you who are fighting them fires I plead the blood of Jesus over you and God's protection from his holy angels amen The word of God says all of these things must take place before the second coming of Christ we are living in a fallen world and if you would look at the Holy Bible it would answer every why you have

This present governement DID NOT increase the budget and chose to leave it where it was despite whomever decreased it before. So dont go blaming political parties for this like a bunch of ostriches.

In March i believe, the present government in fact DID increase the budget, to the tune of 150million over the next 3 years. For 2024, 55 million. Not sure where you people get your info, or if you even really bother to look it up or just parrot whatever it you heard at the local U.F.A.

@@BenoitCharland-rp8jb climate change is here so let’s do nothing, let everything go as before without any further changes, you sound like a repeating blabber with nothing useful to offer here. Let’s start managing our forests to reduce the spread of fires and minimize the impact on our environment as much as possible. Let’s cut down excessive dead trees and reduce the underbrush. See the difference between us?
