Protein is a substance found in the blood, which circulates throughout your body through the blood and helps in maintaining fluid balance in the body. It itself is a type of protein, which is made by the liver. It is noteworthy that albumin is the most abundant protein found in the blood.
Albumin also helps maintain the balance of fluids in the body. This prevents excessive leakage in the blood vessels. Apart from this, it also plays an important role in making the tissues healthy and in the growth of the body by delivering important hormones and nutrients to the body.
When a problem affects the liver's ability to produce albumin, the albumin levels become low or very low. Apart from this, due to problems like increased absorption of protein, increase in plasma volume or reduction in protein due to kidney related problems, the albumin level also starts decreasing.
Albumin test is a common blood test, with the help of which the amount of protein called albumin present in the blood is checked. The chances of low albumin level in the body increases due to operation, open wound or burn etc.
If the albumin level is found to be low in the results of this test, it may indicate liver or kidney related diseases. Low levels of albumin may also indicate nutritional deficiency in the patient.
A healthy liver absorbs proteins from the food a person eats. When the liver does not function properly, the production of albumin decreases and due to this the albumin level starts decreasing.
If your doctor suspects that you have a problem that affects your liver function, such as liver disease. In such a situation, the doctor can do an albumin test.
